FIP Seminar: Optical Diagnostics for Improved Pancreatic Disease Detection
Dr. Mary-Ann Mycek's research program in Biomedical Photonics involves developing and applying methods of optical science and engineering to probe and quantify the living systems found in biology and medicine. Her goal is to impact patient care via the development of non- and minimally-invasive biophotonic diagnostic technologies. Her translational ("bench to bedside") research strategy employs three major approaches: (1) Optical Molecular Imaging (basic, pre-clinical studies on model systems); (2) Clinical Optical Diagnostics (applied, clinical studies on human tissues); (3) Computational Modeling (quantitative models of light propagation in tissues). Mary-Ann Mycek is the Associate Dean for Graduate Education in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. She is also a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, as well as a member of the Applied Physics Graduate Program and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Mycek received her Ph.D. in Physics from U.C. Berkeley, where she specialized in condensed matter physics and ultrafast optical spectroscopy, before pursuing postdoctoral training in laser medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She was an Assistant Professor of Physics & Astronomy at Dartmouth College before joining the University of Michigan. Her translational ("bench to bedside") research program in biomedical photonics involves using light for noninvasive tissue diagnostics.
