"String Theory: what it is and why we care" - String theorists recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1968 paper by Gabriele Veneziano computing the first string scattering amplitude. I will explain what the challenge is to which string theory may be a solution and why this is important. I will then review some
parts of a formulation of the theory, and show why we think it may solve the problem. As time permits, I will list some of what we have learned about and from string theory in the last few decades, present
some topics under current investigation, and outline some possible future directions. Faculty host: Joshua Socolar. Refreshments will be available before the event in room 130.
