A Conversation with Amitav Ghosh

Join the Franklin Humanities Institute for a reading and conversation with acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh!

Ghosh will screen a six-minute film and have a conversation with Franklin Humanities Institute Director Ranjana Khanna about his work, centering on aquatic aesthetics, the way in which water is rendered in his work, and his novel The Hungry Tide. Ghosh will also read from his related novel-in-progress.

There will be a reading group discussion of Ghosh's "The Hungry Tide" the week prior, at 5:30pm on Tuesday, October 30 at the FHI (https://fhi.duke.edu/events/reading-group-hungry-tide-amitav-ghosh). The first 20 people to RSVP will receive a free copy of the book!

This event is part of Duke at Home in the World, a celebration of international ties organized by the Office of Global Affairs and sponsored by the von der Heyden Fellows Fund, established by Karl ('62) and Mary Ellen von der Heyden.

This event is also part of the Franklin Humanities Institute's Water series. With multiple events over the coming academic year, this new series will cover many aspects of humanistic and artistic responses to water, from oceanic voyages to lives built around rivers, from aquatic aesthetics to refugee migration, from water shortage to floods, and from water conceived through sacred forms to aquatic lifeworlds and ontologies.

This event is also part of the Humanities Futures initiative @ the Franklin Humanities Institute.
