Tuesday, October 30, 2018
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Paul Sturtevant
Medievalism and Contemporary Culture Speaker Series

Sponsored by the UNC Greensboro English Department, Class of 1952 Professorship, and the Women's and Gender Studies Program. Dr. Paul Sturtevant (Smithsonian Institution), is the editor-in-chief of The Public Medievalist, an online magazine written by medievalists for a broad public audience. Since 2016, he and his team have spearheaded a series on Race, Racism and the Middle Ages that exposes and debunks the lies about the medieval world at the heart of the white nationalist narrative. In his talk, he will discuss the series, and particularly some of the weird ways that modern-day racists and xenophobes try to use the Middle Ages to spread their message of hate. He will also offer handy guidelines for identifying the historical BS you will find in the wild.

Those coming from off-campus who are not familiar with UNCG can park in the Oakland Parking deck (located just off of Spring Garden St. in between Forest and Kenilworth Streets). The Education Building is located at the corner of Stirling St. and Spring Garden St., right across from the Oakland parking deck (also across from Yum-Yum Ice Cream and diagonal from the Bojangles). You can plot your exact route here: https://parking.uncg.edu/access/access.html
