Physics Department Symposium: Journey to Discovery of the Standard Model of Elementary Particle Physics

FROM BIOLOGY IN THE 1960'S TO DISCOVERY OF THE HIGGS BOSON

The symposium reviews the major discoveries that led to the construction of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics from its inception in the 1960's to a culmination with the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. It will conclude with speculations about possible future directions of this field in experiment and theory. The symposium brings together speakers who were involved with the excitement of making many of the discoveries. This event is part of the recognition of James B. Duke Professor Al Goshaw "moving on" to emeritus status at Duke University, and will include reminiscences from some of his former students, post docs, and colleagues from the CDF and ATLAS experiments.
