Understanding Chronic Pain and Opioid Use Among Cancer Survivors

Despite having a high prevalence of chronic pain and being at high risk for opioid-related harms, cancer survivors are critically underrepresented in opioid-related research.

Dr. Check will present ongoing and planned research projects that examine patterns of opioid use among clinically and demographically diverse cancer survivors. Her projects are designed to inform the development of interventions aimed at improving the safety and effectiveness of chronic pain treatment among members of the growing cancer survivor population.

About Dr. Check
Devon Check, PhD is a health services researcher focused on understanding and overcoming barriers to the delivery of equitable, high-quality care for patients with cancer and other potentially life-limiting conditions. She received her PhD in Health Policy and Management from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the Department of Population Health Sciences at Duke, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Delivery Science at Kaiser Permanente Northern California.
