At research universities around the country, faculty and administrators face multiple pressures in sustaining competitive and vibrant PhD programs. How can PhD program leaders maintain disciplinary integrity and traditional measures of excellence, while also remaining attentive to new currents in research and pedagogy, new models of disseminating scholarship, increasingly difficult job academic markets for new PhDs, and the imperative to diversify the academy (and realms beyond)? Join Edward Balleisen, Vice-Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies, as he talks about these challenges with Leonard Cassuto, author of the forthcoming book, "The New PhD" (Johns Hopkins UP, 2020).
