Jazz, Magic Lantern, and Early Cinema in Colonial East Asia
Sponsor(s): Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES)
What is cinema and where was cinema? How do we approach the modernity of cinema in a colonial context? This talk explores the circuitous, transnational connections of early cinema in colonial East Asia, from magic lantern shows to film screening tours, from African-American jazz to Taiwanese pop made for Chinese silent films, and eventually, from the politics of seeing to the reformation of cultural identities.A light lunch included.
