Early modern printing press at work
Friday, March 31, 2023
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Astrid Giugni (English and Computational Science) and Sarah Konrad (Duke Focus student)

Sarah Konrad (Med/Ren Focus, Fall 2021) and Astrid Giugni (Lecturing Fellow, English Department) will be presenting a live learning experience describing an ongoing undergraduate research project: "Mapping Publishing Networks in Early Modern London" (the recorded live stream will be available for later viewing). The project, supported by generous funding from the Center for Computational Thinking at Duke University, introduced students to a variety of computational methods with the goal of reconstructing the lively literary publishing world of London in the early 17th century. The project uses Social and Network analysis tools, such as Gephi as well as visualization packages in R and Python, to rethink authorship in terms of collaborations between writers, publisher, and printers.
