Director Chauntee' Schuler Irving

Duke students are welcome to audition in person or by video submission for the cast of "Rent" by Jonathan Larson, directed by Broadway actor and Theater Studies Professor of the Practice Chauntee' Schuler Irving. This Spring Mainstage show presented by the Department of Theater Studies will be co-produced by Hoof 'n' Horn, running April 6-9 and 13-15, 2023 in Reynolds Industries Theater with a live band. (See the band audition info on the Duke Events calendar if you're a drummer, bassist, keyboardist or otherwise musically inclined to try out!)

Actors should prepare 32 bars (about 60-90 seconds) of a pop/rock musical selection in the style of the show's era. Please **avoid** singing songs from the show itself or from the musical theater canon. Pop radio hits of the 1980s and early 1990s are preferred. Think Blondie, Kate Bush, Whitney Houston, George Michael, etc. to find a song suiting your personal style. A great resource for songs and audition cuts/sheet music can be found through Spotify's pages of "Rock the Audition" and www.musicnotes.com. For questions related to casting, please contact the Director Chauntee' Schuler Irving (chauntee.irving@duke.edu). General inquiries should be sent to the Director of Theater Thomas Quintas (thomas.quintas@duke.edu). The show will run April 6-9 and 13-15, 2023 in Reynolds Industries Theater. Students selected for the cast may enroll in THEATRST 350-1 for credit if desired with a permission number, but aren't required to do so.
