Duke researchers and leaders
Research Town Hall Series

From speaking up to defend our shared values in maintaining research integrity, to managing conflicts of interests, protecting human subjects or disseminating research results - all are connected to the principle of conducting socially responsible science. Duke leaders and researchers join us for a discussion on how to make sure that this principle is well served and share their own best practices in conducting or supporting cutting edge research at Duke. How do we ensure that research we conduct is worthwhile in the eyes of the public and our peers? How to navigate the tension between social responsibility, social interest and advocacy? Is it OK to conduct and publish research that can be weaponized or serve potentially very harmful goals if it falls into the wrong hands? How to navigate the tension between generating and publishing research data that may not support an important social cause or contradict researcher's social beliefs? Is it ever acceptable to suppress the publication of scientifically valid data for sociopolitical reasons? Is it ethical to engage the public in policy research?
