Spirit in the Land: An Afternoon in Historic Stagville

Noon: Guided tours at the Nasher Museum
2 PM: Gather at Horton Grove at Historic Stagville for a guided walk with Vivette Jeffries Logan and Justin Robinson

The Nasher Museum and Historic Stagville co-present an afternoon of tours for all ages, inspired by the exhibition Spirit in the Land. We invite visitors to start the afternoon with a tour of the museum galleries, where 30 artists, through their artwork, show how our individual and collective identities are shaped by the natural world. The artists approach ecological awareness through a close attention to the communities most negatively affected by climate change, exemplifying how essential both biodiversity and cultural diversity are to our survival. Then we invite visitors to take a short drive to Historic Stagville, a state site that includes the remnants of the one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The 165-acre site is dedicated to teaching about the lives, culture and labors of enslaved African Americans. Vivette Jeffries Logan and Justin Robinson will lead a commemorative and ecological guided walk. Free Spirit in the Land postcards will be available to take home.

Vivette Jeffries-Logan (Kanahabnen Tabunitckia translation: "Morning Star") is an enrolled member of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, the Indigenous people of Orange, Alamance and Caswell counties in North Carolina.

Justin Robinson is a Grammy award-winning musician and vocalist, cultural preservationist, and historic foodways expert.
