Documenting Medicine: Duke Residents & Fellows Share Their Documentary Work

Eleven Duke physician residents representing nine different departments enrolled in the Documenting Medicine program this year will present their final projects to the public. The projects, which encompass a wide range of patient and provider stories, reveal an intimate and rare glimpse into the challenges and opportunities of providing health care in today's increasingly complex medical system.From Chief Surgery Resident Lisa Tracy's multimedia portraits of families affected by gun violence in Durham to Psychiatry Resident Jose Ribas' photographic survey of therapeutic spaces, the projects use documentary as a mode of inquiry to highlight the human dimension in healthcare today.In 2010, Dr. John Moses and Liisa Ogburn, with support from the Graduate Medical Education Innovation Fund, the Center for Documentary Studies and Duke Hospital President Kevin Sowers, joined forces to offer Duke physician residents the opportunity to produce documentary projects which examine a health story. Applications are currently being accepted for 2012-2013.
