About a year and half ago, the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa expressed their deeply rooted dissatisfaction with the status quo by taking to the streets, demanding dignity, fairness, rule of law and accountability from their rulers. A series of political, social and economic reforms consequently set in motion is perceived by many as a genuine transformative movement towards improved pluralism, transparency, social inclusion and governance. What does this mean for the health systems in the region? Are they likely to benefit from what could end up becoming a very profound transformation? Or could health systems lead the way as catalyst towards more equitable and just societies in full alignment with the spirit of the revolutionary zeal? If so, where to start? What do to next? And how the international community could help?
