Jianguo Liu of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University will present on "Conservation Policies in China and Implications for the World" on the Duke University campus April 2 at 1 p.m.China is among the world¿s most biodiverse countries with immense ecosystem services. Unfortunately, biodiversity and ecosystem services in many areas have been degraded or lost due to a variety of reasons, such as rapid economic development, increasing human population size, even faster household proliferation, and inappropriate governance. The resulting degradation and loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services have generated large negative impacts on ecosystems and human well-being. Having realized these problems, China has implemented a number of large-scale conservation policies to protect and restore biodiversity and ecosystem services. In this talk, the speaker will provide an overview of China¿s major conservation policies, illustrate their biophysical and socioeconomic effects, highlight challenges and opportunities, and discuss implications for the world. This talk is part of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series featuring leading experts discussing a variety of pressing environmentally focused topics.
