General Douglas M. Fraser served from 2009 to 2013 as the Commander in Chief of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), one of nine unified Combatant Commands in the Department of Defense. Its area of responsibility encompasses Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. As commander of SOUTHCOM, he was in charge of the Department of Defense¿s effort to provide assistance to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He coordinated with the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.His talk will address the current challenges of managing the U.S. security agenda in this region during a period of significant resource constraints. A welcome reception will precede the talk at 5 p.m. Limited parking available in the PPS lot behind Sanford.
