Wednesday, January 20, 2016
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Duke Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO-U), in cooperation with the Pratt School of Engineering and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), offers a four-week summer program in Kumasi, Ghana. Though the theme of the program is Engineering and Human Needs, the program is designed for and open to all majors. Students will explore the development of engineered infrastructure and consumer products within Ghana, vis-a-vis landfill sites, agricultural farm sites, building and highway construction sites, oil companies, marketplace, auto-mechanic villages, hospitals and clinics. Students on the program will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with students from KNUST to understand and assess problems (taking into consideration cultural beliefs or thinking) and think about or provide solutions. The course is distinct because students observe, interact, and find a problem to solve instead of being given one to solve, empowering them to apply engineering skills and knowledge to address real needs and create value for the society.
