Tom Evans
Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the University Program in Environmental Policy seminar series

Tom Evans, a professor in the Department of Geography and senior fellow with the Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University, will speak at Duke University on "Food Systems Governance, Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation in Africa," 10-11:30 a.m. February 12 in room 1112 of Environment Hall.

Climate change is having significant impacts on agricultural production in dryland ecosysystems, this is particularly the case in Africa where a large portion of farmers are reliant on rained agricultural systems or small-scale irrigation. Evans will discuss the interplay between governance, household-level decision making and food security based on research in Zambia and Kenya. He will address the adaptive capacity of farmers in different types of smallholder systems in context of changing climate patterns evident in East and Southern Africa.
