4:15 pm - 5:30 pm
Patrick Herron - Jenkins Collaboratory
Media Arts + Sciences Rendezvous

In the talk I will introduce the Globonano nanotechnology analysis platform and how it allows us to examine the societal impact of nanotechnology and begin to realize real-time technology mining. Globonano allows us to understand the development of nanotechnology and its constituent areas by giving us insight into nanotechnology's scientific literature, patents, government and private funding, commercialization and productization. Through Globonano we are able to merge knowledge-based and resource-based economic approaches in a data-first way, providing us with a rich way of comparing national nanotechnology strategies and examining the creation and translation of pioneering innovation. Recently we have extended work on Globonano to incorporate social network analysis. Through these capabilities we have examined the recent efforts of the National Cancer Institute's Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer to bring about a new generation of nanomedical technologies. The goal of the MA+S Rendezvous is to create a community through: meeting face-to-face with other people who are interested in Media Arts + Sciences, sharing ideas/methods/resources, learning about the projects we're all working on, and socializing and getting to know each other better. Our featured speaker will give a short review of their project(s). The rest of the time will be open for general discussion. All those interested in Media Arts + Sciences at Duke are welcome! Drinks & light snacks are provided.
