Media Arts + Sciences Rendezvous

Visualization is often touted as a way of both exploring and communicating the results of data analysis. The role of visualization as a source of inspiration and engagement with a research topic is less examined but no less crucial to the power of visualization. This talk will feature an introduction to the Places and Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit, an exhibit of 100 maps of science that is being hosted at Duke throughout the spring semester. These maps span many topic areas and visualization techniques and show the range of opportunities afforded by visualization. After a short discussion of the history of the exhibit and the other exhibit venues at Duke, the group will take a tour through Bay 11 to see the group of 40 maps and additional exhibit elements displayed in Smith Warehouse. The maps will be available throughout the spring semester to inspire visualizations for research and education across campus. All those interested in Media Arts + Sciences at Duke are welcome! Drinks and light snacks are provided. Please enter through Smith Warehouse Bay 12 or Bay 9, 2nd floor.
