Gender-Based Violence in South Africa

Join us for a discussion on gender-based violence in South Africa with a focus on RTI's USAID-funded Women's Justice and Empowerment Initiative (WJEI, 2008-2012). This initiative was designed to support the Government of South Africa to scale up its integrated, multidisciplinary model for combating sexual violence against women and children, known as Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs). Thuthuzela is a Xhosa word, which means 'to hold or comfort'. TCCs are designed to ensure that the almost 40,000 reported rapes perpetrated against children, women and a growing percentage of men are dealt with expeditiously and efficiently within the criminal justice system. Participants in the discussion are: Christian Arandel, RTI International (moderator); Peter Vaz, RTI International; Catherine Admay, DCID; Busi Sibeko, Duke student and MasterCard Foundation Scholar; and Jacob Tobia, Duke student and Vice President of Equity and Outreach for Duke Student Government. This panel is co-sponsored by RTI International and the North Carolina chapter of UN Women, along with the Concilium on Southern Africa. The series, Professors, Practitioners & Students in Conversation, is a collaboration between Duke University and RTI International, connecting the classroom with real-world problems and applications.
