'Traditional Values' and LGBT rights in Africa

Event Image
Wednesday, April 02, 2014
5:15 pm - 6:30 pm
A Conversation with Graeme Reid

Spearheaded by Russia, "traditional values" has become code for homophobia at the United Nations Human Rights Council. In Russia itself "traditional values" are used to justify legislation outlawing propaganda of "non-traditional sexual relations". Similar laws have passed in other countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria and Uganda, for example, have recently outlawed active support for LGBT rights or "promotion" of homosexuality. "Culture", "tradition", "protecting children" and "the family" are invoked as justification for this extreme legislation. In contrast, South Africa outlaws discrimination on the basis of "sexual orientation". This talk will focus on the growing divide between the rhetoric of "traditional values" and "human rights", focusing on developments in sub-Saharan Africa.
