Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland novels are wildly popular in Japan, having been adapted by creators as diverse as author Ryunosuke Akutagawa, fine artist Yayoi Kusama, and mangaka Kaori Yuki. In this talk, Amanda Kennell (Assistant Teaching Professor of International Studies, NCSU) examines over a century of Japanese Alice adaptations to reveal why artists return to Alice and what Alice reveals about the contemporary media environment.
