The Iranian Cultural Society of NC (ICSNC) & Graduate Student Association of Iranians at Duke (GSAID) present the Duke University Emamian Lectureship Series featuring a lecture by Dr. Jeff Jones (UNCG) on The Graveyard of Empire? A comparative view of the Soviet & American Wars in Afghanistan.

Jeff Jones completed his Ph.D. in 2000 at UNC-Chapel Hill and is currently an Associate Professor of Russian-Soviet and contemporary world history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His first book is entitled Everyday Life and the 'Reconstruction' of Soviet Russia During and After the Great Patriotic War, 1943-1948, and he is currently completing a book entitled Smoke, Mirrors and Memories: A Cultural History of the Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989, forthcoming (hopefully) in 2021. He published an article, "Mothers, Prostitutes, and the Collapse of the USSR: Svetlana Alexievich's Representation of Women in Zinky Boys" in a 2017 special edition of Canadian Slavonic Papers dedicated to Alexievich's work, and he is also revising an article, "Cold War Crusader: Andrew Eiva, the KGB, and the Collapse of the USSR" for publication.

This lecture will be conducted in english and is free and open to the public.
