 nd education series\, featuring four ADF-commissioned world premieres by 
 renowned choreographers and performed by ADF students.  This year's chore
 ographers are Ephrat Asherie\, Stephan Koplowitz\, Vincent E. Thomas\, an
 d Keith A. Thompson. Asherie is a New York City-based choreographer\, per
 former\, b-girl\, and a "Bessie" award winner for Innovative Achievement 
 in Dance. She creates dynamic\, rhythm-driven work for the dancers of her
  company\, Ephrat Asherie Dance. Koplowitz is a multidisciplinary artist 
 whose 40-year career spans site-specific and concert dance-theater\, inte
 ractive media installations\, film\, and photography. His large-scale sit
 e works transform public spaces and invite communities to experience plac
 es in new ways. Thomas is a choreographer\, dancer\, and teacher and the 
 Artistic Director of VTDance. His work blends contemporary dance\, improv
 isation\, text\, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with artists across
  mediums. Thompson is a choreographer\, director\, and multifaceted conte
 mporary dance artist. He serves as Assistant Director of Dance and Associ
 ate Professor in the School of Music\, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State

 ape is the subject Shen Wei has been developing in his recent paintings a
 nd dances. This concept reflects Chinese culture\, permeating philosophy\
 , art\, and daily life. It is not merely a psychological state\, but a sp
 iritual pursuit and a way of life. Through self-cultivation\, continuous 
 exploration\, and elevation of one's "mindscape\," one pursues inner harm
 ony and transcendence. The work is being created in Guangzhou this Spring
  and will premiere in China in June before making its US premiere at ADF.
  The work will feature US dancers from Shen Wei Dance Arts and Chinese da
 ncers from Guangdong Modern Dance Company. This will be the first co-prod

DESCRIPTION:Few works in modern dance carry the legacy of Alvin Ailey's Re
 velations\, a masterpiece set to spirituals and gospel music that has mov
 ed audiences worldwide since 1960 and remains the most widely seen work i
 n modern dance history. In Sacred Spaces\, Associate Artistic Director Ma
 tthew Rushing and Co-creator and Musical Director Du'Bois A'Keen revisit 
 that legacy through a new lens.\n\nSacred Spaces expands on Sacred Places
 : Decoding the Spiritual\, developed during Rushing and A'Keen's residenc
 y at Duke Divinity School this past April. The work originated from Rushi
 ng's vision to build a ballet around spirituals removed from Revelations 
 when it was shortened for touring.\n\nSacred Spaces explores memory\, com
 munity\, and cultural inheritance. Performed by musicians\, vocalists\, d
 ancers\, and visual artists from across the Triangle\, this new work hono

DESCRIPTION:Six dancers take the stage in MAJOR to explore the power\, mem
 ory\, and physicality of majorette dance\, a form that originated in the 
 American South within Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the
  1960s. In this dance-theater work\, six Black femmes revisit the rhythms
  of their girlhood and rediscover the bodies they shaped through choreogr
 aphy\, spoken word\, and a music score by Lambkin blending Southern rap\,
  horns\, drumlines\, and melodic R&B and soul. \n\nThe work is created by

DESCRIPTION:Gathering unfolds in a fictional village under siege\, where a
  woman struggles to reconcile fragmented memories of home through movemen
 t\, ritual\, and music. In this evocative work\, hundreds of oranges spil
 l across the stage-passed hand to hand\, stacked on bodies\, scattered an
 d crushed underfoot-as dancers reshape the space in an ever-shifting medi
 tation on loss\, survival\, and human connection. Conceived and directed 
 by Samar Haddad King\, Gathering blends dance\, song\, puppetry\, and pla
 y with music from Max Richter's Vivaldi alongside King's original composi
 tions. Both intimate and expansive\, Gathering is a work of aching beauty
  that lingers long after the scent of citrus fills the air. \n\nFounded b
 y King and operated out of the United States\, Palestine\, and France\, Y
 aa Samar! Dance Theatre creates multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perf
 ormances that unite diverse groups through creative encounters. Returning
  to Duke after Last Ward in 2024\, the company has developed more than 30
  original works presented across the United States and internationally.

DESCRIPTION:Two years after a sold-out performance\, Durham native and for
 mer Alvin Ailey dancer Hope Boykin returns to Duke Arts with a trio of ac
 claimed American dance companies: Cleo Parker Robinson Dance\, Hubbard St
 reet Dance Chicago\, and her eponymous company HopeBoykinDance. This dyna
 mic repertory evening will feature short works by each company before cul
 minating in the premiere of Troubled No More\, a new dance work by Boykin
  celebrating the music and legacy of gospel legend Pastor Shirley Caesar.
  \n\nRaised in Durham\, Boykin grew up listening to Caesar's powerful voi
 ce\, absorbing its rhythms and spirit from an early age. As director and 
 choreographer\, she channels that lifelong influence into this vibrant ne
 w work created for Cleo Parker Robinson Dance\, Hubbard Street Dance Chic
 ago\, and HopeBoykinDance. \n\nBringing three companies together on one s
 tage\, Troubled No More is a joyful tribute to Caesar's enduring musical 
 legacy and to the power of gospel music.
