DESCRIPTION:APSI's summer book club is back by popular demand. This year\,
the books have been chosen to set the stage for APSI's annual keynote ta
lk (November 2026) which will feature author and professor Viet Thanh Ngu
yen.\n\nProfessor Eileen Cheng-yin Chow (Duke) concludes our two-book seq
uence with Nguyen's newest book\, To Save and to Destroy\, which was shor
tlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism.\n\nThe d
iscussion will take place online\, so members of the community near and f
ar are welcome to join.\n\nBe sure to register via Zoom (https://duke.zoo
 m.us/meeting/register/0zQgAwqnRFai8lhl1I8x-g)\n\nFrom the publisher\nThe
essays here\, delivered originally as the prestigious Norton Lectures\, p
roffer a new answer to a classic literary question: What does the outside
r mean to literary writing? Over the course of six captivating and moving
chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses
 that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial.\n
\nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen's craft and weav
es in the haunting story of his late mother's mental illness. Nguyen unfo
lds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\,
Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, unti
l aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and poli
tics. What is a writer's responsibility in a time of violence? Should we
celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless-or do we confront the
forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the b
urdens and pleasures of the "minor" writer in any society? Unsatisfied wi
th the modest inclusion accorded to "model minorities" such as Asian Amer
icans\, Nguyen sets the agenda for a more radical and disquieting solidar
ity with those whose lives have been devastated by imperialism and foreve
 r wars.\n\nAbout the moderator\nEileen Cheng-yin Chow is Associate Profes
sor of the Practice in Chinese and Japanese Cultural Studies at Duke Univ
ersity\, and one of the founding directors of Story Lab at Duke. She is D
irector of Graduate Studies for APSI and a founding/core faculty member o
f Duke Asian American and Diaspora Studies program.

DESCRIPTION:Reception with light refreshments starts at 5:15pm. Siraganian
's talk starts at 5:30pm. \n\nSHOULD NONHUMANS HAVE RIGHTS IN LAW AND POL
ITICS?\n\nOver the last twenty-five years\, the concept of per-sonhood ha
s become central to many contentious debates. Corporations have won free
speech protections\, as if they were individuals. The right to life or fr
eedom has been claimed on behalf of fetuses\, trees\, and elephants. The
fund of human rights is spilling over into the nonhuman.\n\nThe Problem o
f Personhood reveals the unsettling consequences of granting rights to im
agined persons\, such as Sophia the robot citizen or New Zealand's Whanga
nui River. Synthesizing the political and philosophical debates on perso
nhood and drawing on a varied cast of thinkers that includes Simone Weil\
, Hannah Arendt\, and Dr. Seuss\, Lisa Siraganian uncovers the disturbin
g impact of this contemporary development. Awarding rights to robots and
rivers all too easily becomes a legal tool to turn people into capital. W
hen robot Sophia is made a citizen\, "she" is transformed into a subject
in the law without the corresponding legal duties that protect us from h
er.\n\nAt the root of this trend is the US Supreme Court's Citizens Unite
d ruling that grants First Amendment rights to corporations as if they we
re individuals. The result has not been the transformation of things into
humans so much as humans into things\, when animals and the environment
would be better protected with reference to our humanity rather than to t
 heirs.
