DESCRIPTION:We all want to find happiness through a life lived with purpos
 e. But how do our ways of thinking help or hinder us from finding meaning
in our lives? How can conscious awareness of one's emotions - a practice
called "metacognition" - open up new possibilities for true flourishing?
Join us for a lecture by Arthur Brooks\, Professor at Harvard Business S
chool\, and a conversation with Iain McGilchrist (Oxford) and Nita Faraha
 ny (Duke Law).

e in most academic disciplines\, but there are demonstrated inequities an
d biases within the practices and rates of citation. Women and people of
color are historically underrepresented in academia\, and their published
work is cited at lower rates than white men. Publications from the globa
l south are generally cited less than those from western nations. In this
session\, we'll discuss the common biases reflected in citation practice
s\, what efforts are being made to address them\, and how faculty can str
ive to be more equitable and inclusive in their citational practice.\n\nW
e invite <b>faculty and research staff</b> to join Duke librarians for an
interactive introduction to citational justice and discussion of concept
s and practice for Responsible Conduct of Research credit. Breakout room
discussions of a citation diversity statement will be facilitated by a li
 brarian.\n\n___\nAre you a <b>graduate student</b> interested in learning

DESCRIPTION:In a classical moral theory like that of Thomas Aquinas (1225-
1274)\, which centers on the moral status of discrete actions performed b
y individual persons\, it can seem hard to find room for the notion of st
ructural injustice. Although Aquinas himself does not raise questions abo
ut structural injustices\, I argue that certain principles he lays down i
n his theory of justice provide resources \nto develop a "Thomistic" appr
oach to structural racism\, one that is capable of distinguishing cases o
f genuine structural racism from innocent disparities\, and that also exp
lains why one can be morally obligated to remediate an unjust social stru
cture even if one has not personally taken part in its creation.

DESCRIPTION:This talk is based on Professor Yanshuo Zhang's new book\, "Cr
eative Belonging: The Qiang and Multiethnic Imagination in Modern China"
(University of Michigan Press\, January 2026). \n\nThe Qiang\, one of mod
ern China's officially recognized ethnic minorities\, is also China's lon
gest-standing ethnoracial identity marker that has existed since the earl
iest recorded history of China. Creative Belonging investigates the forma
tion and evolution of the Qiang as a people\, a concept\, and a cultural
history. It illuminates how a small ethnic minority group known today as
the "Qiang" in China's Himalayan regions have carved out spaces of "creat
ive belonging" in their daily practice\, cultural productions\, and self-
representations within the parameters of multiculturalism in globalizing
China. \n\nCreative Belonging crisscrosses multiple humanistic fields\, s
uch as literature\, history\, visual culture\, media studies\, and anthro
pology\, to propose an interdisciplinary\, multiethnic new scholarly para
digm to incorporate China and the Asia Pacific worlds into the global stu
dies of race\, ethnicity\, and identity. In this talk\, Professor Zhang w
ill present her innovative research methodologies that combine ethnograph
ic fieldwork with textual-archival research in the minority regions of Ch
ina.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nYanshuo Zhang is Assistant Professor of Asi
an Languages and Literatures at Pomona College\, California. She is an in
terdisciplinary scholar of Asia whose research lies at the intersections
of literature\, history\, visual culture\, and anthropology. She is the P
rincipal Investigator (PI) of the singular national winner of the Inaugur
al Luce/ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies) Collaborative Grant
in China Studies\, titled "Resituating Humanistic Pedagogy in China Studi
es: Incorporating Ethnic Minority Literary and Cultural Productions into
North American College Classrooms."\n\nProfessor Zhang is leading a group
of scholars\, translators\, artists\, and ethnic minority and indigenous
collaborators in mainland China and Taiwan on developing a collective da
tabase that would offer innovative and original materials on teaching mul
tiethnic China for the English-speaking and multilingual audience interna
tionally. This project\, as well as her new book\, aims to bring to light
the creative cultural endeavors made by China's non-Han minority groups\
 , including literature\, cinema\, ethnographic documentaries\, and folk c
 ultural heritage.

DESCRIPTION:--Thandi Cai\, 2024\, 47 min\, USA\, in English--\n\nIntroduct
ion and post-screening discussion moderated by Professor Eileen Chow.\n\n
***Two storytellers\, one community\, and 150 years of untold history.***
\n\n"Bluff City Chinese" follows two Chinese-American storytellers\, film
maker Thandi Cai and Delta elder Emerald Dunn\, as they uncover the untol
d history of Chinese immigrants in Memphis\, Tennessee. \n\nThrough perso
nal journeys\, community oral histories\, and archival research\, the fil
 m weaves a 150-year tapestry of identity\, belonging\, and resilience. \n
\nSet against a backdrop of social and racial tensions\, this intergenera
tional collaboration celebrates the power of storytelling to preserve her
itage\, bridge divides\, and inspire unity for future generations.\n\nAbo
ut the director:\n\nThandi Cai (they/them)\, Director and Creator of "Blu
ff City Chinese\," identifies as a storyteller of the Asian Diaspora. Cai
grew up in Memphis\, TN where they learned how storytelling could be use
 d to empower themselves and others across racial\, political\, gender\, e
thnic and economic lines. Cai uses visual arts\, film-making\, and graphi
c design to begin conversations around critical dialogue. Their goal as a
n artist is to arouse imagination\, pleasure\, and improvisation to ideat
e new paths forward. After earning a BS in Architectural Design\, they se
rved for two years as an education volunteer for Peace Corps Lesotho unti
l 2018. From there they were a teaching-artist\, exploring the intersecti
on of nonprofit work\, art\, and community organizing. In 2022\, they ear
ned an MFA in Visual Communication Design at the School of the Art Instit
ute of Chicago. They maintain a community-centered design practice\, part
nering with clients such as Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa\,
  US-China Business Council\, and Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden. \n\nDur
ing the pandemic\, they moved back to Memphis and met Emerald Dunn to hel
p independently research 150 years of Chinese Memphian history. Cai creat
ed this documentary out of a desire to reveal and recover the untold trut
 h. They say this Memphis-made film is a love letter to their younger self
-and our future selves-to help heal and transcend the hurts of racial pre
judice.\n\nCosponsors:\n\nAsian/Pacific Studies Institute at Duke\; Duke

DESCRIPTION:Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics and host Adriane Lentz-Smi
th for a conversation with Mike Wiley how the arts can bridge the past an
d present - and bring communities together.\n\nThrough performances that
bring the drama of American history to life - whether escapes from slaver
y\, devastating acts of racial violence\, or civil rights struggles and t
riumphs - actor and playwright Mike Wiley confronts audiences with the pe
rsisting legacies of inequality in the United States. But by inviting aud
iences to walk in the shoes of people very different from them\, he also
creates avenues for reconciliation.\n\nMike Wiley is a North Carolina-bas
ed actor\, playwright and director of multiple one-man documentary dramas
and full-cast ensemble plays\, including Changing Same: The Cold-Blooded
Killing of Booker T. Spicely\; The Fire of Freedom\; Leaving Eden\; The
Parchman Hour\; Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till\; the theatrical adaptat
ion of Blood Done Sign My Name\; One Noble Journey\; and more. He has ove
r twenty years of experience in providing documentary theatre for young a
udiences and in schools across North Carolina in addition to his work in
film\, television and regional theatre.\n\nMike Wiley is the Stephen and
Janet Bear Assistant Research Professor of Arts\, Ethics\, and Education
in the Program in Education at Duke University. He also co-directs Americ
a's Hallowed Ground\, a project of the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke
University that uses the arts to amplify and honor sites of past struggl
es significant to the American story\, particularly its history of racial
inequality.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. It takes place
at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham\, NC. Parking is available on the
premises\, at Phoenix Square\, Heritage Square Shopping Center\, and on
adjacent streets. Please write to Hillary Train at hillary.train@duke.edu

DESCRIPTION:The sharing of research data has become increasingly important
to federal and private funders and journal publishers for a number of re
 asons (research transparency\, reproducibility\, return on investment\, n
ew research on existing data\, etc.). With the latest requirements from t
he National Institutes of Health (NIH) for Data Management and Sharing Pl
ans (https://sharing.nih.gov/)\, there are legitimate concerns about how
data from human beings can ethically and safely be shared. This workshop
will talk about the various challenges that arise when considering how to
share human participants data in DMSPs and potential ways that these cha
llenges can be addressed\, and even solved\, with resources available at
Duke and beyond (data sharing consent language\, controlled access reposi
 tories\, de-identification help\, etc.). This event is open to Non-Duke p
articipants. This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate School RCR
Credit and 200-level faculty and staff RCR.

DESCRIPTION:In premodern philosophy\, simple contemplative acts such as "t
hinking about horseness" are often the main focus when discussing the met
aphysics of thinking. But what should we make of other intellectual acts\
, such as formulating and assenting to propositions\, or reasoning throug
h arguments? I will explore how Thomas Aquinas offers an alternative to "
information-processing" models of reasoning and propositional thinking\,
by examining his analogies of the human intellect to biologically living
 things. For Aquinas\, knowing is\, literally\, growing!

DESCRIPTION:<b>REGISTRATION</b>: <a href="https://duke.libcal.com/event/15
 998083" target="_blank">Click Here</a>\n\n\nHumanities researchers can am
ass a considerable number of primary and secondary text-based sources for
their research. These may include scans of archival documents such as ma
nuscripts\, newspapers\, books\, and other materials. They may also inclu
de varying-quality scans of secondary sources on loan from their own or o
ther libraries. While close reading of this material is key for many huma
nities researchers\, making use of so much data can also be supported by
computation: by using computational tools to transcribe handwritten and p
rinted text\, scholars can query their text data to quickly find informat
ion. These processes\, optical character recognition (OCR) for printed te
xt and handwritten text recognition (HTR) for handwritten text\, have imp
roved significantly in recent years with machine learning and generative
artificial intelligence. In this workshop\, we will examine how these tec
hnologies work\, practice using several tools for OCR and HTR\, and consi
der the opportunities and challenges that can arise when using these tech
nologies with different page layouts\, languages\, and scripts. <b>Partic
ipants are encouraged to bring a laptop.</b>\n\nBy the end of this worksh

\;\n- implement several OCR and HTR technologies in your research\; and\n

transparency.\n\nThis workshop will be facilitated by <a href="https://di

DESCRIPTION:This talk is based on research for Professor Seow's current bo
ok project\, "The Human Factor: How Chinese Psychologists Reimagined the
Science of Work in the Machine Age\," which examines how labor itself was
made into an object of scientific inquiry.\n\nFocusing on the history of
industrial psychology in China from the 1930s to the present\, it shows
how psychologists repeatedly reimagined and reconfigured their field in r
esponse to shifting political and industrial demands. That process genera
ted a durable tension between devising methods to meet managerial demands
for productivity and improving workers' safety and well-being.\n\nBy tra
cing how this tension was negotiated across decades of upheaval\, this bo
ok highlights how labor became a key site where the ambitions and contrad
ictions of industrial society were visibly exposed.\nAbout the speaker:\n
\nVictor Seow is the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Scien
ces at Harvard University. He is a historian of technology and science\,
specializing in modern China and Japan in their global contexts. His rese
arch seeks to advance a more integrated understanding of industrial socie
ty by examining how technological artifacts\, scientific knowledge\, and
forces of production intersect in shaping economic development\, labor or
ganization\, and environmental change\, with particular emphasis on energ
y and work as engines of production and levers of governance.\n\nHe is th
e author of "Carbon Technocracy: Energy Regimes in Modern East Asia" (Chi
cago: University of Chicago Press\, 2022)\, a book that uses the history
of East Asia's onetime largest coal mine to explore questions about the r
elationship between energy and power in the industrial modern age. It dem
onstrates how Japanese imperial\, Chinese Nationalist\, and Chinese Commu
nist regimes alike turned to coal as the foundation of industrial growth
and state power. This faith in carbon thrived on paradox-anxieties about
scarcity alongside fantasies of inexhaustibility-and exacted staggering h
uman and environmental costs. The book further reveals that even in the m
ost mechanized settings\, extraction was sustained by workers' labor\, wh
ich remained indispensable to the technoscientific regime that sought to
 transcend it.
