Over the course of six captivating and moving chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial.\n \nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen's craft and weav es in the haunting story of his late mother's mental illness. Nguyen unfo lds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, unti l aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and poli tics. What is a writer's responsibility in a time of violence? Should we celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless-or do we confront the forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the b urdens and pleasures of the "minor" writer in any society? Many of the trees were planted directly by the French\, and trees planted by successive regimes also followed the mo del of those earliest French treescapes. While there is much to cherish a bout Saigon's trees\, they were rooted in a larger colonial discourse thr ough which the French simultaneously justified colonial rule and denigrat ed indigenous Vietnamese modes of habitation. \n\nSimilar dynamics can al so be found in post-war and post-reform Ho Chi Minh City. Like the French \, contemporary government and city leaders also assert their legitimacy through urban tree planting programs\, even as they routinely ignore loca l experience and knowledge by felling trees to make way for infrastructur e projects. City residents regularly seek to resist attempts to fell tree s\, but overt political responses are curtailed by the political controls imposed by Vietnam's single party state\, and they are forced to turn to alternative approaches.\n\nOne such approach\, which I call a poetic pol itics of shade\, emphasizes aesthetics and affective\, embodied experienc es with urban shade\, and mobilizes intense forms of devotion to the tree s. While the people do not win every victory against the developers' chai nsaws\, poetic politics builds from and reinforces enduring relations to urban shade trees that may have the capacity to be effective over the lon g haul.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nErik Harms is Professor of Anthropology an d Chair of the Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University. His research focuses on the social and cultural aspects of rapid urbanization in Southeast Asia\, building from more than twenty years of ethnographic research in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam\, commonly known as Saigon.\n\nPr ofessor Harms is the author of "Saigon's Edge: On the Margins of Ho Chi M inh City" (Minnesota\, 2011)\, "Luxury and Rubble: Civility and Disposses sion in the New Saigon" (California\, 2016)\, as well as numerous peer-re viewed articles. Dinner will be provided.\n\nKata Ge llen\, Galicia as a Literary Idea: Jewish Eastern Europe in the Writings of Joseph Roth and Soma Morgenstern. (University of Toronto Press\, 2026 ). In the decades following the dissolution of Austria-Hungary\, the former province of Galicia inspired the literary imagination of two Germa n-language natives of this region\, Joseph Roth and Soma Morgenstern. Gal icia as a Literary Idea explores what their engagement with Galicia means for modern Jewish culture\, history\, and memory.\n\nGellen is Associate Professor of German Studies and Director of the Center for Jewish Studie s. Her main areas of research and teaching include German literary modern ism\, German-Jewish studies\, postwar Austrian literature and cinema\, fi lm studies\, and sound studies. She is the author of Kafka and Noise: The Discovery of Cinematic Sound in Literary Modernism (Northwestern Univers ity Press\, 2019) and numerous essays on writers including Robert Musil\, Elias Canetti\, Rainer Maria Rilke\, Gertrud Kolmar\, Günther Anders\, a nd Thomas Bernhard\, as well as essays on Weimar Cinema. She is currentl y writing a book on contemporary transgressive Austrian cinema called Ulr ich Seidl\, Brutal Humanist.\n\nDaniel Herskowitz\, The Judeo-Christian T hought of Franz Rosenzweig. (Liverpool University Press\, 2025) offers a new interpretation of Franz Rosenzweig's magnum opus The Star of Redempti on\, commonly treated as one of the high points of modern Jewish thought\ , and demonstrates its profound immersion in the Protestant conceptuality of its time\n\nHerskowitz is the Smart Family Associate Professor of Rel igious Studies. Before this he was a research fellow and lecturer at the University of Oxford. He was also a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Colum bia University. He is the author of two books\, Heidegger and His Jewish Reception (Cambridge)\, and The Judeo-Christian Thought of Franz Rosenzwe ig (The British Academy). He is the editor of Hans Jonas: The Early Years (Routledge) and Studies on the Jewish Experience (Brill). He is currentl y writing a book on the history and politics of Nostra Aetate. The PMC engages diverse communities to lift up the life and legacy of activist\, legal scholar\, feminist\, poet\, Episcopal prie st and LGBTQ community member\, Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray\, to tackle endurin g inequities and injustice in our nation.

The Center began as the Pauli Murray Project: a public humanities\, community-based initiativ e of the Duke Human Rights Center at the John Hope Franklin Humanities In stitute (DHRC@FHI) aimed at promoting open dialogue among Durham resident s about the pressing issues of our time and their historical roots\; docu menting hidden stories of social justice activism\; celebrating Pauli Mur ray's life and legacy and continuing their work for social change. Now an independent nonprofit organization that operates a National Historic Lan dmark site (the Fitzgerald home\, Pauli's childhood residence)\, the Cent er connects experiences of the past to contemporary human rights issues\, inspiring visitors of all ages to be like Pauli\, by standing up\, speak ing out and taking action based on their principles.

"Writing Pau li Murray History in the Twenty-First Century: The Impact of Transgender Studies"

\n

Focusing on primary documents in Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray " PM Medical" archival folder\, Dr. Simon Fisher will explore how transgend er historiography sheds new light on these documents within the context o f several intersecting histories: African American history\, history of m edicine\, feminist history\, and queer and transgender history. He will d iscuss the narrative arc of the presence of transgender identity within P auli Murray historical studies from the turn of the twenty-first century to the present\, and highlight the current federal efforts to erase Murra y's Black\, queer\, and transgender activist histories from the nation's public memory.

Dr. Simon Fisher teaches United States history at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia\, Canada. His research on Pauli Murra y has appeared in the Journal of African American History\, Transgender S tudies Quarterly\, the SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies\, and was featu red on the podcast BackStory.

\n

Using the archives of the African National Congress of Sout h Africa & the letters and memoirs of past activists\, this talk will exa mine how women shaped the exiled struggle against apartheid in South Afri ca. From the 1960s through the 1980s\, South African women pushed the mai nstream of the anti-apartheid movement to consider women's particular suf fering under apartheid\, and to fight for broad social transformation as part of overthrowing apartheid. At the same time\, within the movement\, generational tensions also sparked conversation and at times heated disag reement over topics like sex education\, access to birth control\, and th e right to family life within a militarized revolutionary movement. These challenging conversations reveal that younger generations of exiles brou ght new political ideas into the movement from the mid-1970s onwards\, tr ansforming an aging political organization into a more militant formation .

They have been divided into 6 working groups work ing on the topics of the legal self\, constitutionalism\, theocracy\, lan guage\, female clerical authority\, and the persecution of heretics. The Dialogue is not merely meant to identify similarities and differences\, b ut to allow scholars to think their "own" tradition conceptually anew thr ough this encounter. The project arrives at Duke in order to present its findings and receive constructive critique from Triangle-area scholars of co-written book chapters that will eventually be published in Rutgers Un iversity Press' "Transmodern Times" series. Throug h innovative archival research\, it uncovers the crucial roles that local women played in circulating war supplies and currency across the region. \n\nThe result is an intimate and global history of the Korean War that urges us to rethink the often-antithetical relationship between sexual in timacy and market economies in the context of war and occupation.\n\nAbou t the speaker:\nJeongmin Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History. Her research and teaching focuses on the histories of modern Korea and East Asia\, the US in the world\, gender and sexuality\, and mi litarism and capitalism. She is the author of "Black Market Intimacies: T he Transpacific Sexual Economy of the Korean War" (Stanford University Pr ess\, 2026). She has published two articles related to this project in th e Radical History Review and American Historical Review.\n\nShe is curren tly working on two book-length projects. The first\, "Unseemly Military: The Undocumented Workers of U.S. Wars and Occupations in Cold War Asia\," is a study of the gendered and racialized experiences of local civilians who provided essential labor on US overseas bases. The preliminary resea rch for this project has been supported by a SSHRC Insight Development Gr ant and the Dave Abrams and Gene Banning Pan Am Research Grant. The secon d project\, "Money's Military Life\," chronicles the use of military scri p by the Japanese and U.S. army forces in the Asia-Pacific region. This year's projects explore the history and contemporary experiences of Morocco's Sephardic Jewish community and the complex dynamics of Jewish-Muslim relations\, as well as the story of the family of Keith Siegel\, who was taken hostage during the October 7 attacks. Through these films\, students examine questions of identity\, m emory\, resilience\, intercommunal relations\, and the ways global events resonate within local communities\, including at Duke and in Durham.\n\n The festival celebrates the creativity and intellectual engagement of Duk e undergraduates while highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of Jewis h Studies.
