DESCRIPTION:The Biostatistics Service of NC TraCS is hosting a special sem
inar for investigators considering submitting NIH grant applications in a
n upcoming application cycle. This session provides a practical guide to
designing and describing statistical analysis plans in NIH-style proposal
 s. No deep statistical background is required. Participants will learn ho
w reviewers evaluate analytic sections\, how to work effectively with bio
statisticians\, and how to justify power and analytic decisions in ways t
hat strengthen the overall proposal. The session highlights common pitfal
ls and offers clear strategies for aligning study aims\, design\, analysi
s\, and sample size to produce proposals that are both rigorous and persu
 asive.\n\nRegistration link: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-BVFhdvX
QXez3NhidJnEtA\n\nThis event is being cross-promoted by the NC BERD Conso
 rtium\, a collaboration of the CTSA-funded BERD cores at UNC-Chapel Hill\
, Wake Forest University School of Medicine\, and Duke University School
 of Medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Reconfiguring\, modulating and processing light at v
isible wavelengths typically requires complex and bulky table-top optics.
High resolution optical applications such as optogenetic neural studies\
, fluorescence microscopy\, and quantum information systems have a growin
g need for compact and efficient platforms that can control and readout l
arge numbers of optical channels. However\, in the visible wavelength ran
ge\, where key optical transitions lie\, this is a significant challenge
because the traditional silicon photonics chip-scale platforms cannot be
leveraged due to fundamental material absorption limits. Silicon nitride
has been demonstrated as a foundry-compatible\, low-loss photonic platfor
m operating down to 400 nm wavelength through optimized fabrication proce
sses and mode engineering. The platform's recent demonstrations in switch
ing networks\, optical phased arrays\, and active modulation show its pot
ential as an excellent interface between light and optically addressable
atoms or cells. This talk will highlight recent work in silicon nitride v
isible photonic integrated circuits on mode-multiplexing structures for h
igh resolution beam shaping and structuring from multimode waveguides and
compact on-chip apertures.\n\nBio: Aseema Mohanty is the Clare Boothe Lu
ce Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts Un
iversity. She received her B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute o
f Technology and Ph.D. from Cornell University. During her postdoctoral w
ork at Columbia University\, she developed an implantable neural probe ba
sed on visible photonic integrated circuits for sub-millisecond and singl
e-cell neural stimulation and readout. Her research focuses on using nano
photonics and engineered light-matter interactions to create miniaturized
high performance optical circuits to control\, shape\, and sense light.
Her interest in chip-scale optical devices broadly span the fields of neu
roscience\, implantable and wearable biomedical sensors\, 3D optical beam
shaping\, quantum information and emerging computing and communication s
ystems. Her work has been published in Nature Photonics\, Nature Biomedic
al Engineering\, Nature Communications and received the NSF CAREER in 202
5.\n--\nCo-hosted by the Duke Quantum Center\, the NC State Quantum Initi
ative\, and the UNC Kenan-Flagler's Rethinc. Labs.

DESCRIPTION:A conversation and an opportunity to get up close to the livin
g (and dying) post-plantation soils at the Duke Campus Farm\, and to thin
k together about the limits of repair. We'll read an article by Anna Krzy
woszynska and learn practical techniques for cultivating the Piedmont's n
 otoriously heavy clay soils. \n\n️ Saturday\, April 25\, 2026\n10:00AM-12
:00PM\n Duke Campus Farm\n Light breakfast included\n Registration is fre
e but required. \n\nAbout this session\n\nThis session centers soil as a
living world\, and as an archive and a witness to human and more-than-hum
an forms of harm and care. We'll learn together about pedogenesis (soil f
ormation) and think together about the limits of repair. \n\nThe Piedmont
's heavy clays are notoriously difficult to cultivate. We'll do some hand
s-on exploration of soil restoration as a feminist methodology\, and as a
n everyday form of care\, while engaging with Anna Krzywoszynska's work o
n microbial labor. \n\nNote that this both an academic reading group and
 a hands-on workshop\, requiring a brief pre-reading. Please come prepared
to participate fully in both elements of the program. This said\, no pri
or experience with composting or critical theory required-just a willingn
ess to work and think with soil. This workshop is primarily for faculty a
nd graduate students (though dedicated undergraduates are welcome to join
). Participants will leave with a working knowledge of cultivation techni
ques that can be used in household settings\, as well as frameworks for t
hinking about embodied practice as a site of feminist knowledge productio
 n. \n\nAbout the series\n\nComposting Theory: Ecological Care in Practice
is a hands-on workshop series developed by the Revaluing Care Lab in col
laboration with the Duke Campus Farm. The series explores ecological care
as a feminist and post-humanist practice through material engagement wit
h soil and living systems\, and collective reflection. Check out our past
events.\n\nThese workshops are designed primarily for faculty and gradua
te students. Advanced undergraduates interested in participating should e
mail saskia.cornes@duke.edu.\n\nPlease email any additional inquiries to
 revaluingcarelab@duke.edu.

DESCRIPTION:The Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materia
ls Science hosts Dr. Leila Bridgeman (Duke) to present the MEMS Seminar e
ntitled\, "New Tools from Old Ideas: Input-Output Theory for Robust Netwo
rked and Learning-Based Control"\n\nAbstract: The advent of 'big data' an
d learning-based methods that train neural network controllers have broug
ht leaps in performance in many areas. However\, there's still much to be
gained from diving into the classic literature - even when confronting m
odern problems in control. This talk will explore three instances of this
: how a shift in perspective turns traditional robust control theory into
an ideal framework for distributed control for large networks of interac
ting agents\; how insights from finite element methods can provide new to
ols for stable\, data-driven control of nonlinear systems\; and how quadt
ree data structures enable model-free\, deterministic safety assurances..
. even without constructing a barrier function!\n\nBio: Dr. Leila Bridgma
n is an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Scien
ce at Duke University. She earned B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Applied Math
 ematics in 2008 and 2010 from McGill University\, Montreal\, QC\, Canada\
, where she completed her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering\, earning McGil
l's 2016 D.W. Ambridge Prize for outstanding dissertation in the physical
sciences and engineering. She was a recipient of a 2023 ONR Young Invest
igator Prize.\n\nThrough her research\, Leila strives to bridge the gap b
etween theoretical results in robust and optimal control and their use in
practice. She explores how the tools of numerical analysis\, input-outpu
t stability theory\, and set invariance can be applied through practical\
, computationally-tractable algorithms. Resulting publications have consi
dered applications of this work to robotic\, process control\, and time-d
elay systems and the development of autonomous ultrasound and laser actua
 ted robotics.

DESCRIPTION:The current administration's mass deportation campaign led to
a surge in the number of people being held in ICE detention centers. The
administration revived the practice of detaining families\, and there are
now hundreds of children in these centers-who are usually\, but not alwa
ys\, held with a parent. Last year\, 32 people died in ICE custody\, the
agency's deadliest year in over two decades. Detainees have described ICE
detention centers as filthy\, with overcrowded sleeping quarters and inh
umane living conditions\, including a lack of food and clean drinking wat
er and inadequate medical care. There have been outbreaks of measles and
COVID. This multidisciplinary panel of scholars will shine a light on the
public policy crisis of ICE detention centers\, bringing historical\, hu
man rights\, public health\, and psychological perspectives to a much-nee
ded conversation and mapping out a path forward.\n\nFeaturing panelists C

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Since 2004\, the Models of Infectious Disease Agent
Study (MIDAS) has been an NIGMS-supported community of researchers focuse
d on the development and evaluation of mathematical techniques for modeli
ng outbreaks of infectious diseases. The MIDAS Coordination Center (midas
network.us) was established in 2019\, when MIDAS transitioned from a smal
l group of researchers funded through specific programs to a community op
en to anyone working in the field. The Center's mission is "to advance sc
ience to improve global preparedness and response against infectious dise
ase threats through research\, training\, promotion\, and service." Throu
ghout the height of the COVID-19 emergency and since\, the MIDAS Coordina
tion Center has curated data\, supported community efforts such as the CO
VID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub\, coordinated working groups\, hosted events
including a webinar and annual meetings\, and conducted research into th
e application of data science principles to infectious disease modeling.
Updates on these and related efforts will be provided\, along with commen
ts on challenges associated with research community coordination. \n\nBio
: Harry Hochheiser\, PhD is Professor in the Department of Biomedical Inf

DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, a wave of "exotic" hadrons has cha
llenged the traditional quark model of hadrons. Candidates for tetraquark
 s\, pentaquarks\, molecular states\, hybrids\, and glueballs have revital
ized hadron spectroscopy. Many of these intriguing states decay strongly
into three or more particles\, making their interpretation particularly c
hallenging. Due to poorly understood three-body interactions\, extracting
their masses and widths requires advanced techniques at the intersection
of lattice QCD and scattering theory.\n\nIn this colloquium\, I will exp
lain why three-body physics has become central to modern hadron spectrosc
opy and how recent progress is enabling more reliable extractions of reso
nance properties. I will highlight key formal advances connecting finite-
volume field theory and analytic properties of three-particle scattering
amplitudes\, and will discuss applications ranging from Efimov physics to
the doubly charmed tetraquark T_{cc} and mixed light-meson systems. I wi
ll conclude with a perspective on where the field is heading\, including
opportunities for lattice QCD and amplitude analysis in the coming years.
