DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For a robot to prepare a meal or clean a room\, it m
ust make a large array of decisions\, such as what objects to clean first
\, where to grasp each ingredient and tool\, how to open a heavy\, overst
uffed cabinet\, and so on. To enable robots to tackle these tasks\, I dec
ompose the problem into two interdependent layers: generating a series of
subgoals (i.e.\, a strategy) and solving for the robot behavior that ach
ieves each of these subgoals. Critically\, to accomplish a rich set of ma
nipulation tasks\, these subgoal solvers must account for force\, motion\
, deformation\, contact\, uncertainty and partial observability.\n\nMy re
search contributes models and algorithms for generating this kind of robo
t behavior such that it both generalizes to new environments and can be c
omposed into long-horizon strategies. In this talk\, I will first discuss
how this approach has enabled robots to perform tasks that require reaso
ning over and exerting force\, like opening a childproof medicine bottle
with a single arm. Next\, I will illustrate different ways robots can mak
e robust choices in the face of uncertainty. For example\, this empowers
robots to reliably chop up fruit of unknown ripeness! Finally\, I propose
how robots operating with uncertain dynamics can generate cautious behav
ior\, such as shoving an object near the edge of the table without it fal
ling.

\nAbstract: Human pancreatic cancer persists as a significant global heal
th challenge with high mortality rates\, and the precise etiology of panc
reatic cancer remains elusive. While current treatments include surgery a
nd conventional chemotherapeutic agents\, the antiausterity strategy has
emerged as a promising approach to target the tolerance of pancreatic can
cer cells to nutrient-deprived microenvironments. In 2020\, three natural
products\, namely ferutinin (1)\, a new daucane-type sesquiterpenoid (2)
and kuhistanicaol G (3)\, were proved possessing potent antiausterity ac
tivity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells. However\, their stru
cture-activity relationships (SAR) and mechanism of action have yet to be
elucidated. Therefore\, we sought to establish an efficient and divergen
t route to complete the total synthesis of these natural products and to
prepare analogs to probe SAR.\nThis dissertation first describes the cons
truction of two structural features of all three target compounds: a quat
ernary carbon center and a 5\,7-fused bicyclic system with trans ring jun
ction. The synthesis of 1 was subsequently accomplished following a few f
unctionalizations. Additionally\, this work includes preparation of the k
ey allylic alcohol precursor to 2 and 3. Evaluations of the antiausterity
activity of compounds 1 and 3\, as well as four derivatives\, are curren
tly in progress. These synthetic efforts and establishment of SAR will ai
d in the development of chemotherapeutic agents with new mechanisms of ac
tion against human pancreatic cancer\, offering hope for improved treatme
nt outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:The group velocity $v_F$ of the electrons in a flat band super
conductor is extremely slow\, resulting in quenched kinetic energy. Super
conductivity thus appears impossible\, as conventional BCS theory implies
a vanishing superfluid stiffness\, coherence length\, and critical curre
nt. Using twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG)\, we explore the profound effec
t very small $v_F$ in a superconducting Dirac flat band system. Non-linea
r transport studies\, we measure $v_F$ via the Schwinger effect\, yieldin
g an extremely slow $v_F\\sim$ 1000 m/s for filling fraction between -1/2
and -3/4 of the moiré superlattice. This same velocity yields a new limi
ting mechanism for the superconducting critical current\, with analogies
to a relativistic superfluid. We estimate the superfluid stiffness\, whic
h determines the electrodynamic response of the superconductor\, showing
that it is not dominated by the kinetic energy\, but by the interaction-d
riven superconducting gap\, consistent with recent theories on quantum ge
ometric contributions. We study the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BE
C) crossover via coherence length measurements\, finding an unprecedented
ratio of the superconducting transition temperature to the Fermi tempera
ture exceeding unity\, illustrating how this can arise for very strong co
upling superconductivity in ultra-flat Dirac bands. Moreover\, a canonica
l example of geometric frustration is a triangular lattice with antiferro
magnetic nearest neighbor spin coupling\, which can lead to phases such a
s spin ices and spin liquids. Much less studied is geometric frustration
based on orbital coupling. In our recent work\, we have shown that incomp
ressible states form at 1/3 fractional filling factors in twisted bilayer
graphene at angles larger than the magic one that are strongly dominant
over integer fillings. These results are in agreement with a strong-coupl
ing theory based on Coulomb interactions between electrons occupying thre
e-lobed Wannier orbitals\, leading to symmetry-broken phases with distinc
t charge\, spin\, and valley order.

DESCRIPTION:There is compelling evidence that convictions and incarceratio
n have negative impacts on labor market outcomes. But research also shows
that offenders have relatively low levels of human capital even before a
ny contact with the justice system. Thus\, accurately characterizing an o
ffender's employment profile and the plausible impact of the justice syst
em has been challenging due to this population's non-trivial involvement
in both formal and informal sectors and the non-linear relationship betwe
en criminal justice involvement and economic outcomes (e.g. the first cri
minal record playing a critical role in life-long employment outcomes). W
e use high-quality longitudinal criminal justice records through CJARS in
tegrated with extensive labor market data (IRS W-2s and ACS self-reported
work) to examine the effect of criminal justice interactions on labor ma
rket outcomes in an event study framework. Employment and earnings are tr
acked in both formal administrative as well as self-reported employment s
tatus in survey responses\, providing an opportunity to identify informal
ity and its implications. In this research\, we highlight the importance
of periodicity of criminal justice events and the role of shifts to infor
mal employment\, particularly when using event studies and administrative
data.

DESCRIPTION:Tens of millions of people in the United States have been dire
ctly impacted by the criminal justice system\, with nearly half the popul
ation affected through close familial or social ties. Alongside the direc
t harm inflicted by the system\, an insidious challenge arises: the syste
m's opaque nature makes pinpointing the specific loci of harm complex and
elusive. Echoing the words of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells\, who st
ated that "the way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon the
m\," this talk will showcase how data science can be harnessed to expose
racial injustice. It will feature case studies spanning various scales an
d stages of the criminal justice system\, including policing in the small
municipality of Williamstown\, Massachusetts\; criminal sentencing acros
s all 94 federal district courts\; and incarceration at Rikers Island in
New York during the COVID pandemic. These examples underscore the pivotal
role of data science tools in fostering transparency and advancing justi
ce.\n\nReception following the event in Physics 101.

DESCRIPTION:Difference Image Analysis (DIA) is a primary enabling techniqu
e in time-domain astronomy. The weather condition\, photometric scaling\,
and sky background generally vary with time and across the field of view
for astronomical imaging data acquired through optical or nearinfrared t
elescopes. These variations necessitate the homogenization of observed im
ages using DIA to accurately measure the brightness of stellar explosions
uncovered by the timedomain\nsurveys. In my talk\, I will review the fun
damental concepts of DIA and the prevalent methods employed in time-domai
n community\, with a particular emphasis on our novel SFFT algorithm. The
SFFT method can enable accurate image differencing in Fourier space with
remarkable computational advancement. I will show some existing applicat
ions of SFFT method in time-domain surveys\, such as the DECam program DE
SIRT in concert with the DESI operation for intermediate-redshift transie
nts. Furthermore\, I will highlight a transient\nsearch framework we deve
loped for JWST NIRCam/NIRISS observations and discuss our upcoming JWST C
ycle 3 archival program for cosmic transients.

DESCRIPTION:"Fly in Power" follows Charlotte\, a Korean massage worker and
core organizer of Red Canary Song (RCS). Through her story\, we learn ho
w the incarceration system is pitted against Asian migrant women and thei
r survival. Other RCS members\, including Khokhoi\, a young body worker\,
and Professor Elena Shih\, Brown University\, share powerful insights th
at debunk the myths of sex trafficking. \n\n"Fly in Power" is a glimpse i
nto the intimate spaces that not only connect these workers\, but is also
a testament to the global advocacy of women's rights to work and thrive.
This is the first film to center the narrative of an Asian massage worke
r in her own words\, with her own agency of storytelling and editing. The
intention of "Fly in Power" is to honor their practices of care\, autono
my\, and survival and to raise awareness of the oppressive systems that f
ace us all.\n\nThis film has been produced entirely by women\, non-binary
\, trans and queers of the Asian diaspora. More than half of the producti
on team are former or current sex workers.\n\nThe screening will be follo
wed by a Q&A with members of Red Canary Song\, a grassroots organization
of Asian and Migrant sex workers and massage workers\, organizing transna
tionally.

DESCRIPTION:We have remarkable AIs and precise robots\, but why do humans
still do so much tedious physical work\, from factories to households? Th
e core missing piece is dexterity - the ability to manipulate objects ski
llfully. Human-level dexterity is the complex synergy of mind and body\,
from the lowest level of sensorimotor control to the highest level of cog
nitive thinking. Dexterity is the crucial intelligence of task solving an
d execution. Achieving robot dexterity will transform industries and peop
le's lives by empowering robots to perform complex manual processes seaml
essly in factories\, households\, service industries\, space operations\,
etc.\nIn this talk\, I will provide new perspectives on this complex pro
blem based on my research. Why is dexterity so complex? We will broaden o
ur understanding by studying three questions. First\, what kinds of robot
s are made for dexterity? Second\, what do complex dexterous manipulation
interactions involve? Third\, what skills will robots need to achieve de
xterity? Finally\, we will discuss the path toward general dexterity in r

DESCRIPTION:With intricate ridge and valley networks\, natural landscapes
shaped by fluvial erosion often exhibit universal scaling laws and self-s
imilar behavior. These properties are also displayed by the solutions of
landscape evolution modes (LEMs)\, when fluvial erosion dominates over th
e smoothing tendency of diffusion (i.e.\, soil creep). Under such conditi
ons\, an invariant self-similar regime is reached where the average lands
cape properties become independent of the balance between fluvial erosion
and soil diffusion. In the vanishing limit\, diffusion remains crucial a

hock waves). \nWE illustrate how focusing on the essential elements that
distinguish landscape evolution\, minimalist LEMs become amenable to dime
nsional analysis and other methods of nonlinear field equations\, used fo
r example in fluid mechanics and turbulence\, offering fertile ground to
unveil distinct dynamic regimes (e.g.\, unchannelized\, from incipient va
lley formation\, transitional and statistically self-similar fractal regi
me)\, and properly formulate questions related to the existence of steady
state solution (as opposed to a situation of space time chaos\, similar
to a geomorphological turbulence). We also explore the parallelism betwee
n the landscape self-similarity and the self-similarity of fully develope
d turbulent flows and discuss challenges for evaluating numerical simulat
ion and novel avenues for numerical methods\, as well as ways to bridge b
etween spatially discrete models (i.e.\, river networks) and continuous\,
partial-differential-equation models.\n\nPorporato\, A. (2022). Hydrolog

DESCRIPTION:I will review the concept of Floquet quantum error-correcting
codes\, and more generally\, dynamic codes. These codes are defined throu
gh sequences of low-weight measurements that "evolve" the instantaneous c
ode in time. I will explain how varying the measurement pattern can lead
to the implementation of logical gates. Thus\, in dynamic codes\, the low
-weight measurements varying in time can be used to generate the code\, i
mplement logical gates\, and detect errors. Time permitting\, I will also
discuss preliminary results on completing the universal gate set in pure
ly two dimensions in copies of toric/surface code\, which involves transi
ent fault-tolerant switching to a non-abelian quantum double model.\n\nMa
rgarita is currently a graduate student at MIT advised by Liang Fu\, and
will join Caltech as a Walter Burke postdoctoral fellow in fall 2023. She
works in both condensed matter theory and quantum information. Within qu
antum information\, her interests include dynamic quantum error correctio
n and physics-inspired approaches to quantum computation with qLDPC codes
\, as well as applications of quantum information tools to quantum many-b
ody systems.

DESCRIPTION:Efforts to repurpose CRISPR-Cas systems have produced a suite
of genome editing tools\, including programmable nucleases\, base editors
\, and prime editors. These tools have greatly enabled the study of genom
es and gene function\, and their advancement to therapeutic development h
as demonstrated promise for addressing a host of unmet medical needs. Our
understanding of how endogenous cellular processes influence the activit
y of these tools\, however\, lags far behind their application and\, due
to the rapid pace of technology development\, behind efforts to build new
approaches. Our work focuses on identifying cellular determinants of gen
ome editing tools to better understand how they work. Our results provide
key insights into how those tools interact with the cellular environment
and suggest general strategies for improvement.

DESCRIPTION:Following the ecological and infrastructural turn in media stu
dies\, this dissertation project investigates cultural responses to and r
epresentations of planetary ecological issues. By bringing together 'medi
a events\,' eco-art and media activism in or about the Amazon Forest\, it
embraces a cross-media approach to examine the ecological footprint of m
edia linked to the Amazon within the contemporary context marked by commu
nications revolution\, climate change activism and impending ecological c
atastrophe.\n\nThe project also shows the important place Amazonian ecome
dia has in affecting dominant techniques of environmental communication -
namely framing\, flows and mediation - even as media's material producti
on and processes might remain complicit to extractivism and environmental
degradation.\n\nIn foregrounding emerging media and communicative practi
ces mainly by Amazonian indigenous actors and organizations that at once
promote a transformative engagement with tropical geographic spaces as we
ll as with media's extractivist effects\, the project ultimately helps to
broaden understanding of what role the Amazon is currently playing in bo
th ecological geopolitics as well as mainstream media and visual culture.

gineering Department at Rice University. He received his B.Tech. in elect
rical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology\, Madras in 2002\,
and his master's and Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at the University of Maryland\, College Park in 2004 and 200

d to Associate Professor in 2017 and Professor in 2020\n\nVeeraraghavan i
s co-developer of FlatCam\, a thin sensor chip with a mask that replaces
lenses in a traditional camera. Making it practical are the sophisticated
computer algorithms that process what the sensor detects and converts th
e sensor measurements into images and videos. FlatCams may find use in se
curity or disaster-relief applications and as flexible\, foldable\, weara
ble cameras\, and even disposable cameras.\n\nThe same team has also deve
loped FlatScope\, a flat microscope and software system that can decode a
nd trigger neurons on the surface of the brain. The project is part of a
$65 million effort by the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agen
cy (DARPA) to develop a high-resolution neural interface. Among many long
-term goals\, the Neural Engineering System Design (NESD) program hopes t
o compensate for a person's loss of vision or hearing by delivering digit
al information directly to parts of the brain that can process it. The Ri

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAll-solid-state batteries are regarded as one of th
e future energy storage technologies capable of competing with the state-
of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Despite tremendous progress\, the performanc
e of all-solid-state metal batteries remains unsatisfactory. In this semi
nar\, I will present the key challenges confronting all-solid-state batte
ries\, ranging from fundamental knowledge gap in understanding major fail
ure mechanisms to issues in solid-state battery manufacturing issues. The
complex origins of battery failure necessitate multimodal tools capable
of quantifying void and dendrites\, identifying chemical and mechanical p
roperties and monitoring the processes in situ. We have developed a suite
of methods for structural\, chemical\, and mechanical characterizations
that include operando-SEM\, ToF-SIMS\, and nanoindentation-based stiffnes
s mapping. Materials innovations are equally important. We show how soft
organic redox materials could enable intimate interfacial contact with so
lid electrolytes under low operating pressure. Additionally\, we have dev
eloped an oxysulfide glass electrolyte that forms a thin\, dense\, self-l
imiting interphase against Na metal and exhibits a fully dense glass micr
ostructure. We investigated the role of an interlayer between a lithium m
etal anode and solid electrolyte that prevents lithium dendrite formation
and allow reversible lithium plating and stripping over 2500 cycles. Fin
ally\, we will discuss our recent efforts in battery manufacturing and th
e establishment of a battery prototyping facility at UH.

DESCRIPTION:We have learned much about the origin and evolution of the Uni
verse\, but its main ingredients remain a mystery: atoms only make up onl
y 5%. The rest consists of dark matter and dark energy\, components for w
hich we lack a fundamental physical theory. Better observations are neede
d to guide theory\, and weak gravitational lensing plays an important rol
e in mapping the evolution of the large-scale structure which will allow
us to distinguish between cosmological models. However\, many challenges
remain if we are to extract cosmological information from the complex dat
a that are being collected.

DESCRIPTION:Summary: The first part of this presentation will provide a br
ief overview of optical technologies that enabled high-capacity fiber-opt
ic communication systems\, from single-mode fibers to fibers supporting m
ultiple spatial modes. A perspective on the evolution of high-capacity sy
stems will be discussed. The second part of the talk will focus on power-
efficiency optical detection systems. More specifically\, we will describ
e an experimental demonstration of a system operating at 12.5 bits/photon
with optical clock transmission and recovery on free-running transmitter
s and receivers. \n\nBiography: René-Jean Essiambre joined Bell Labs\, no
w part of Nokia\, in 1997 and is currently based at the Murray Hill Labor
atory in New Providence\, New Jersey\, USA. Dr. Essiambre worked in the a
reas of fiber lasers\, nonlinear fiber optics\, advanced modulation forma
ts\, space-division multiplexing\, information theory\, and high-photon-e
fficiency systems. He participated in the design of commercial fiber-opti
c communication systems where several of his inventions were implemented.
He has given over 150 invited talks and helped prepare and delivered the
2018 Physics Nobel Prize Lecture on behalf of Arthur Ashkin. He served o
n or chaired many conference committees\, including OFC\, ECOC\, CLEO\, a
nd IPC. He received the 2005 Engineering Excellence Award from OPTICA and
is a fellow of the IEEE\, OPTICA\, IAS-TUM\, and Bell Labs. He was Presi

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 4th at 5pm EST\, the Ocean Diplomacy Worki
ng Group and the Rethinking Diplomacy Program are hosting a webinar with
Dr. Nick Gales\, Vice-Chair of the International Whaling Commission and f
ormer head of the Australian Antarctic Program. Throughout his career\, G
ales has worked at the intersection of Antarctic science and policy\, inc
luding testifying on behalf of Australia in the landmark International Wh
aling Commission (IWC) case against Japan for violations of the whaling m
oratorium. Dr. Gales will be addressing three major themes during the dis
cussion: how geopolitics affect Antarctic diplomacy\, the International W
haling Commission\, and how scientists can better engage with the world o
f international diplomacy. Please join us for what promises to be an info
rmative evening!\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Nick Gales is a leading global
practitioner in marine and polar science and diplomacy. Among his many c
areer highlights\, Dr. Gales has served as Australia's Chief Antarctic Sc
ientist in charge of its Antarctic program\, and is a past President of t
he International Society of Marine Mammalogy. Dr. Gales is currently Vice
-Chair of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and Chair of the Aus
tralian Antarctic Science Council.\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by
Rafaella Lobo. Advised by Dr. Lisa Campbell\, Rafa is a PhD candidate in
Marine Science and Conservation at the Nicholas School of the Environmen
t. She is interested in the challenges of global biodiversity governance
from the perspective of the Global South\, and her dissertation research
focuses on the International Whaling Commission. The webinar is being org
anized by Jonathan Choi\, a PhD student and attorney working in the Marin
e Geospatial Ecology Lab led by Dr. Pat Halpin.

we want to think about how entangled and incommensurate racializations re
shape conventions and traditions of critical theory.\n\n\nThursday\, Apri

DESCRIPTION:Chronic\, non-healing wounds affect over 6 million Americans.
Chronic wounds are often associated with bacterial and biofilm infections
and have significantly impaired healing\, accounting for an estimated $2
5 billion annual burden on the US healthcare system. In wound infections\
, biofilms are bacterial communities encased in an extracellular polymeri
c substance (EPS) adherent to biotic or abiotic surfaces. Treatment of bi
ofilms is challenging based on their recalcitrant behavior towards antimi
crobials and host-defenses due to the multi-factorial evasion strategies.
Our team has developed a silk-based\, printed\, flexible electroceutical
dressing that not only disinfects wounds by killing bacterial biofilms b
ut also has shown evidence for healing chronic injuries in animal models.
Additionally\, our electroceutical dressing inhibits formation of biofil
ms in laboratory-scale gel models. Moreover\, our electroceutical\, Smart
Platform for Engineered Electroceutical Dressings (SPEEDs)\, works with
a disposable battery pack to provide a constant potential power source fo
r direct current (DC) flow making it suitable for a small-form factor\, l
ight-weight\, and portable system. SPEEDs have also been integrated with
impedance sensing to remotely monitor wound state. We have evaluated SPEE
Ds extensively\, both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro evaluation shows bac
terial biofilms grown on agar gel (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococ
cus aureus) were killed with a 24-hour continuous treatment with SPEEDs.
The SPEEDs were also found to be effective in eliminating antibiotic tole
rant bacteria. In vivo\, SPEEDs were used to treat chronic\, infected wou
nds in a cat and a dog that remained open with antibiotic resistant bacte
ria. In mechanistic mouse studies with dermal injury and infection\, SPEE
Ds was the most effective in reducing both wound infection and wound area
(> 60% reduction in wound area over 8-days of treatment)\, and observed
re-epithelialization of the wounds (> 20% in 8-days) in contrast to untre
ated (natural infection management and healing) controls.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract. The great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan introduc
ed a summation in 1918\, today called the Ramanujan-sum. For many years t
his summation was used by mathematicians to prove important results in nu
mber theory. In recent years\, some researchers have found applications o
f this sum in digital signal processing\, especially in identifying perio
dic components of signals buried in noise. In our recent work we have gen
eralized the Ramanujan-sum decomposition in several directions\, and this
has opened up some new theory as well as applications. Many beautiful
properties are enjoyed by the new representations\, thanks to the genius
and vision of Ramanujan. In this lecture we briefly talk about Ramanujan
as a person and give an overview of the new signal processing development
s. Applications in signal denoising\, and in the study of DNA and protein
sequences will be presented among others. \n\n\nBiography: Prof. Vaidy
anathan is the Kiyo and Eiko Tomiyasu Professor of Electrical Engineering
at the California Institute of Technology where he has been on the facul
ty since 1983. He also served as the department head for the period 2002-
2005. He has authored nearly 600 papers in the areas of digital signal pr
ocessing and communications\, and several of his papers have received pri
zes from the IEEE. He is the author/coauthor of five books\, and a Life F
ellow of the IEEE. Some of his recognitions include the F. E. Terman Awa
rd of the American Society for Engineering Education\, the IEEE CAS Soci
ety's Golden Jubilee Medal\, and several awards for excellence in teachin
g at the California Institute of Technology\, including the Northrop-Grum
man prize for excellence in teaching. He has also received the IEEE Signa
l Processing Society's Technical Achievement Award\, Education Award\, an
d the "Society Award". He received the IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award
(an IEEE Technical Field Award) in 2016 for "Fundamental contributions t
o digital signal processing\," the EURASIP Athanasios Papoulis award in
2021\, and the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal in 2024. He i
