DESCRIPTION:The Duke Turkish Program & Screen/Society present:\n\n"Şerafet
tin Can Atalay"\n(Nebil Özgentürk\, 2025\, Turkish with English subtitles
\, Digital)\n\nThis documentary film portrays the life and public struggl
e of Can Atalay\, a prominent Turkish human rights lawyer and and elected
Member of Parliament who remains imprisoned despite a binding ruling by
Turkey's Constitutional Court-revealing a profound constitutional and dem
ocratic crisis.\n\nFor decades\, Atalay has represented victims of state
violence\, labor disasters\, environmental destruction\, and political re
pression. Through interviews\, archival footage\, and personal reflection
s\, the film traces Atalay's legal advocacy on behalf of workers\, enviro
nmental activists\, and civil society groups\, as well as the broader dem
ocratic and judicial challenges in contemporary Turkey. Framed as both a
personal portrait and a political chronicle\, the film explores themes of
justice\, resistance\, solidarity\, and the costs of dissent from the Ge
zi Park protests of 2013 to the present.\n\nThe screening will include sp
ecial participation by acclaimed filmmaker Nebil Özgentürk\, offering aud
iences the opportunity to engage directly with the filmmaker's perspectiv
e on the story and its wider implications.\n\n== ABOUT THE FILMMAKER: ==\
 nAs an award-winning journalist\, documentary filmmaker\, and writer\, fo
r more than thirty years Nebil Özgentürk (link opens in a new window/tab)
has been one of Turkey's most important chroniclers of cultural and poli
tical memory\, documenting the lives and ideas of the country's leading w
riters\, thinkers\, artists\, and public intellectuals. His work has long
served as a living archive of Turkey's intellectual life.\n\nToday\, his
camera turns toward a different subject: the erosion of the rule of law
itself. Having spent decades preserving collective memory\, Özgentürk now
documents its deepest injustices.\n\n==\nView trailer: https://www.youtu

DESCRIPTION:Jack Paine (Emory) will present\, "The Last of the Monarchies:
How Colonial State Formation Reshaped Regime Type." \n\nAbstract:\nAs la
te as the nineteenth century\, states were governed almost exclusively by
monarchies. Today\, though\, ruling monarchies are rare. Focusing on Afr
ica and Asia\, I locate this transformation in the process of forming and
reshaping colonial states. Although the overwhelming majority of ninetee
nth-century monarchies became Western dependencies\, less than one-third
of these monarchies were eliminated by the colonizer. Instead\, the main
challenge to monarchical hegemony was the colonizers' preference to agglo
merate smaller monarchies into larger colonies. This was a dynamic proces
s that unfolded across the colonial period\; colonial units were frequent
ly reshaped even after World War II. Subnational monarchs were rarely abl
e to successfully recover power in the face of rising nationalist pressur
e and expanding electorates. The monarchies that survived as postcolonial
national institutions were not the largest and strongest precolonial sta
tes\, like the Sokoto Caliphate in Nigeria or the descendants of the Mugh
al Empire in India. Instead\, colonial survivors were often small units w
hich benefitted from an exceptional characteristic that discouraged agglo
meration into a larger unit\, such as oil wealth\, proximity to white set
tlement states\, Mandate/Trust status\, or location in a mountainous fron
 tier.

DESCRIPTION:This talk is based on Professor Yanshuo Zhang's new book\, "Cr
eative Belonging: The Qiang and Multiethnic Imagination in Modern China"
(University of Michigan Press\, January 2026). \n\nThe Qiang\, one of mod
ern China's officially recognized ethnic minorities\, is also China's lon
gest-standing ethnoracial identity marker that has existed since the earl
iest recorded history of China. Creative Belonging investigates the forma
tion and evolution of the Qiang as a people\, a concept\, and a cultural
history. It illuminates how a small ethnic minority group known today as
the "Qiang" in China's Himalayan regions have carved out spaces of "creat
ive belonging" in their daily practice\, cultural productions\, and self-
representations within the parameters of multiculturalism in globalizing
China. \n\nCreative Belonging crisscrosses multiple humanistic fields\, s
uch as literature\, history\, visual culture\, media studies\, and anthro
pology\, to propose an interdisciplinary\, multiethnic new scholarly para
digm to incorporate China and the Asia Pacific worlds into the global stu
dies of race\, ethnicity\, and identity. In this talk\, Professor Zhang w
ill present her innovative research methodologies that combine ethnograph
ic fieldwork with textual-archival research in the minority regions of Ch
ina.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nYanshuo Zhang is Assistant Professor of Asi
an Languages and Literatures at Pomona College\, California. She is an in
terdisciplinary scholar of Asia whose research lies at the intersections
of literature\, history\, visual culture\, and anthropology. She is the P
rincipal Investigator (PI) of the singular national winner of the Inaugur
al Luce/ACLS (American Council of Learned Societies) Collaborative Grant
in China Studies\, titled "Resituating Humanistic Pedagogy in China Studi
es: Incorporating Ethnic Minority Literary and Cultural Productions into
North American College Classrooms."\n\nProfessor Zhang is leading a group
of scholars\, translators\, artists\, and ethnic minority and indigenous
collaborators in mainland China and Taiwan on developing a collective da
tabase that would offer innovative and original materials on teaching mul
tiethnic China for the English-speaking and multilingual audience interna
tionally. This project\, as well as her new book\, aims to bring to light
the creative cultural endeavors made by China's non-Han minority groups\
 , including literature\, cinema\, ethnographic documentaries\, and folk c
 ultural heritage.

DESCRIPTION:--Thandi Cai\, 2024\, 47 min\, USA\, in English--\n\nIntroduct
ion and post-screening discussion moderated by Professor Eileen Chow.\n\n
***Two storytellers\, one community\, and 150 years of untold history.***
\n\n"Bluff City Chinese" follows two Chinese-American storytellers\, film
maker Thandi Cai and Delta elder Emerald Dunn\, as they uncover the untol
d history of Chinese immigrants in Memphis\, Tennessee. \n\nThrough perso
nal journeys\, community oral histories\, and archival research\, the fil
 m weaves a 150-year tapestry of identity\, belonging\, and resilience. \n
\nSet against a backdrop of social and racial tensions\, this intergenera
tional collaboration celebrates the power of storytelling to preserve her
itage\, bridge divides\, and inspire unity for future generations.\n\nAbo
ut the director:\n\nThandi Cai (they/them)\, Director and Creator of "Blu
ff City Chinese\," identifies as a storyteller of the Asian Diaspora. Cai
grew up in Memphis\, TN\, where they learned how storytelling could be u
sed to empower themselves and others across racial\, political\, gender\,
ethnic\, and economic lines. Cai uses visual arts\, film-making\, and gr
aphic design to begin conversations around critical dialogue. Their goal
as an artist is to arouse imagination\, pleasure\, and improvisation to i
deate new paths forward. After earning a BS in Architectural Design\, the
y served for two years as an education volunteer with the Peace Corps in
Lesotho until 2018. From there\, they were a teaching-artist\, exploring
the intersection of nonprofit work\, art\, and community organizing. In 2
022\, they earned an MFA in Visual Communication Design at the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago. They maintain a community-centered design p
ractice\, partnering with clients such as Open Society Initiative for Sou
 thern Africa\, US-China Business Council\, and Michelle Obama's Kitchen G
arden. \n\nDuring the pandemic\, they moved back to Memphis and met Emera
ld Dunn to help independently research 150 years of Chinese Memphian hist
ory. Cai created this documentary out of a desire to reveal and recover t
he untold truth. They say this Memphis-made film is a love letter to thei
r younger self-and our future selves-to help heal and transcend the hurts
of racial prejudice.\n\nCosponsors:\n\nAsian/Pacific Studies Institute a

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Maya Soifer Irish's research focuses on religious violence
and toleration\, and investigates the legal\, social\, and economic situ
ation of religious minorities in Iberian Christian societies.\n\nShe is c
urrently working on a new book upon which this dialogue is based\, The Po
litics of Persecution in Medieval Spain: Toward the Anti-Jewish Riots of
1391. This work explores the path to the worst outbreak of anti-Jewish v
iolence on Iberian soil. As it examines Christians' treatment of the Jewi
sh community in Seville - the epicenter of the riots - in the decades pre
ceding the massacres\, the book shows that the persecution of Jews in med
ieval Castile evolved in local contexts: in towns and villages where loca
l authorities manipulated and fueled anti-Jewish grievances to pursue the
ir short-term political goals.\n\nDr. Irish's first book\, Jews and Chris
tians in Medieval Castile: Tradition\, Coexistence\, and Change\, was pub
lished in 2016 by The Catholic University of America Press. It explores
the changes in Jewish-Christian relations in the Iberian kingdom of Casti
le during the pivotal period of the "reconquest" and the hundred years th
at followed the end of its most active phase (eleventh to mid-fourteenth
century). Focusing especially on the Christian heartland north of the Du
ero River\, known as Old Castile\, the book offers a detailed investigati
on of the Jews' changing relations with the monarchy\, the church\, and t
he towns.\n\nHer articles have appeared in The Journal of Medieval Histor
 y\, Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies\, Medieval Encounters\, Sefarad\,
and many edited volumes. In 2019\, she held a Fellowship at the Frankel
Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies (University of Michigan). She has s
erved as President of the Fourteenth Century Society\, President of the A
merican Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain\, and President
 of the Texas Medieval Association.

DESCRIPTION:The talk explores how the expansion of the American state for
the First World War reshaped the nature of governance. This wartime state
expansion is examined through the creation\, structure\, activities\, an
d impact of the Council of Defense system on the ability of the United St
ates to mobilize for a significant conflict in a foreign land. Positione
d between the national government and the people\, state Councils of Defe
nse mediated the activities of public\, private\, and individual efforts
in support of mobilization activities. Because of this intermediary posit
ioning\, the councils were instrumental in expanding state capacity and c
apability for military and resource mobilization and supporting an increa
se in the nation's ability to mobilize for the war. The councils' interm
ediary role\, however\, also allowed those managing the mobilization to p
revent any significant challenge to social and political structures\, des
pite the dynamic changes wrought by the need to mobilize the nation for w

DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Sambanis (Yale) will present his talk\, "The Wisdom o
f the Crowd: Beliefs About Others' Beliefs and Group Conformism in Foreig
n Policy."\n\nAbstract: \nDo beliefs about others' beliefs shape individu
al foreign policy preferences? Analyzing experimental data from several c
ases of interstate disputes over territory\, we show that individual pref
erences for belligerence in foreign policy are shaped by expectations of
how likely others are to support belligerence. When the nation's sovereig
nty and identity are threatened\, citizens believe that their co-national
s are likely to support hawkish policies and they conform to those belief
s partly because they view hawkishness as normatively appropriate when th
e national identity is threatened\, regardless of the expected costs of c
onflict. Yet\, if perceptions of public opinion change and the majority i
s viewed as more dovish than previously assumed\, this reduces support fo
r belligerence. Group conformism can be harnessed to de-escalate foreign
policy conflicts even in periods of nationalist upsurge.

DESCRIPTION:The Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center empowers states with ri
gorous evidence to implement effective and equitable policies that ensure
all children thrive from the start. Grounded in the science of the devel
oping child and based on the most rigorous evidence available\, the Prena
tal-to-3 State Policy Roadmap details the most effective state actions th
at foster the nurturing environments infants and toddlers need\, and that
reduce longstanding racial\, ethnic\, and socioeconomic disparities in a
ccess and outcomes. When combined\, the policies and strategies included
in the Roadmap create a system of care that provides broad-based economic
and family supports\, as well as targeted interventions to address ident
ified needs. Dr. Osborne will cover the foundation of the Center's work i
n rigorous research\, what we know about effective state-level policies i
n the PN-3 space\, and how these policies matter for families.\n\nCynthia
Osborne is a Professor of Early Childhood Education and Policy in the De

Aspen Institute Ascend Fellow and has also co-authored reports for the N
ational Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine Committee on B
uilding an Agenda to Reduce the Number of Children in Poverty by Half in
10 Years and Exploring the Opportunity Gap for Young Children from Birth
to Age Eight. Osborne holds a Ph.D. in demography and public affairs from
Princeton University\, a Master in Public Policy degree from Harvard Uni

DESCRIPTION:The New York Times columnist Bret Stephens is a conservative w
ho's clear-eyed and candid about the fact that the Republican Party broke
with conservatism when it embraced Donald Trump. In 2024\, he voted for
Kamala Harris\, all the while taking pointed issue with some of the Democ

 s. He's passionate about the protection of Jewish people\, but a recent s
peech about their miscalculations in the fight against antisemitism gener

s for a fireside chat between Gita Gopinath\, Professor of Economics at H

 embe\, Toril Moi\, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\n\nFredric Jameson (193
4-2024) insisted on "imagining a future which might be radically and cons

of Critical Theory "as a way of keeping the negative alive in a period i
n which praxis\, the unity of the negative and the positive\, itself seem
s suspended." Over the years\, Critical Theory has received scholarly and
popular attention\; it has simultaneously been pronounced dead and an en
during threat. We invite scholars\, including students\, to join us at Du
ke University for a three-day celebration of Fredric Jameson's enduring l
egacy-and to keep imagining\, with him\, the future of Critical Theory.\n
\nThe conference is organized by Duke's Graduate Program in Literature\,
where Jameson taught for forty years\, and the John Hope Franklin Humanit
ies Institute. We acknowledge the generous support of the Holberg Prize
 Committee\, Norway.\n\nRegistration is now open.\nWe invite scholars\, s

DESCRIPTION:Fredric Jameson and the Future of Critical Theory\n\nA three d
 ay conference featuring keynotes and panels\n\nApril 10 - 12\, 2026\nRich
 ard White Auditorium\nDuke University\n\nFriday\, April 10\n1:00pm - 6:45
 pm \n\nSaturday\, April 11\n9:00am - 6:30pm\n\nSunday\, April 12\n9:00am
 - 3:45pm\n\nKeynotes by Michael Denning\, Jane Gaines\, Achille Mbembe\,
Toril Moi\, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak\n\nFredric Jameson (1934-2024)
insisted on "imagining a future which might be radically and constitutio
nally other." The urgency of this task rested on his understanding of Cri
tical Theory "as a way of keeping the negative alive in a period in which
praxis\, the unity of the negative and the positive\, itself seems suspe
nded." Over the years\, Critical Theory has received scholarly and popula
r attention\; it has simultaneously been pronounced dead and an enduring
threat. We invite scholars\, including students\, to join us at Duke Univ
ersity for a three-day celebration of Fredric Jameson's enduring legacy-a
nd to keep imagining\, with him\, the future of Critical Theory.\n\nThe c
onference is organized by Duke's Graduate Program in Literature\, where J
ameson taught for forty years\, and the John Hope Franklin Humanities Ins
titute. We acknowledge the generous support of the Holberg Prize Committe
 e\, Norway.\n\nRegistration is now open.\nWe invite scholars\, students\,
and members of the public to join us in Durham for three days of convers
 ation\, reflection\, and debate.\n\nPlease register here: https://docs.go

DESCRIPTION:The current administration's mass deportation campaign led to
a surge in the number of people being held in ICE detention centers. The
administration revived the practice of detaining families\, and there are
now hundreds of children in these centers-who are usually\, but not alwa
ys\, held with a parent. Last year\, 32 people died in ICE custody\, the
agency's deadliest year in over two decades. Detainees have described ICE
detention centers as filthy\, with overcrowded sleeping quarters and inh
umane living conditions\, including a lack of food and clean drinking wat
er and inadequate medical care. There have been outbreaks of measles and
COVID. This multidisciplinary panel of scholars will shine a light on the
public policy crisis of ICE detention centers\, bringing historical\, hu
man rights\, public health\, and psychological perspectives to a much-nee
ded conversation and mapping out a path forward.\n\nFeaturing panelists C
