Examples are the adhesion between two objects\, wetting of surfaces by contacting liquids and the adsorption of molecules from t he surrounding medium. Accordingly\, it is important to develop chemical tools\, which allow the attachment of tailor-made polymer molecules to su rfaces of different chemical composition and topology. \nIn our presentat ion\, a simple\, new strategy will be presented which allows generating m icropatterned polymer coatings with tailor-made properties with high spat ial resolution. Our strategy is based on C\,H insertion reactions (C\,H i nsertion crosslinking\, CHic). To this a prepolymer containing dormant gr oups is deposited on the material to be coated by standard techniques of coating application. Upon exposure to heat or light the dormant groups be come activated and generate permanent links between the polymer chains an d to the surface.\nAs the crosslinking is performed in the solid state th e resulting surface-attached polymer networks become anisotropic when the y are exposed to solvents. This prevents for entropic reasons the penetra tion of such layers by macromolecules. This 'entropic shielding' paves th e way to surfaces with very unusual properties\, for example extremely lo w friction or protein- and cell repellent surface. We discuss the fundame ntals of the process and demonstrate that this strategy can be used for a broad spectrum of different applications. It is used to reduce the frict ion of surfaces mimicking human joints by more than 99\,5% or use such sy stems for self-shading buildings in architecture. Additionally\, we demon strate that such surfaces can be used in various biomedical applications. We can isolate 1 single circulating tumor cell from a background of 30 b illion other cells within come 40 seconds or demonstrate the generation o f a gym for single biological cells to study mechanotransduction. Towa rds this goal\, we develop ways of integrating Förster resonance energy t ransfer (FRET) chemistry into stimuli-responsive polymer architectures\, such that FRET output (i.e.\, spectral shift in fluorescence) reflects po lymer chain conformation [3]. Using FRET\, we can spatially resolve confo rmation by confocal microscopy methods\, with high spatiotemporal resolut ion. In this talk\, I will discuss strategies to integrate FRET into func tional polymers\, and how we can examine the responsiveness of the polyme rs for understanding physicochemical processes. Specifically\, these syst ems are used to study surface wettability [3]\, localised changes in pH [ 1]\, resolving contact areas between surfaces\, and micro-to-nano structu re in secondary matrices [5]. We further show what are the most efficient methods for integrating FRET into such polymer matrices [6]\, for resolv ing such conformational changes. In this talk\, I will introduce an alternative desig n paradigm based on discrete\, topologically interlocked building blocks: polycatenated architected materials (PAMs). Inspired by chain mail\, PAM s consist of rings\, polygons\, or polyhedral cages concatenated into thr ee-dimensional networks derived from crystalline lattice topologies\, wit h kinematic degrees of freedom set by particle geometry and catenation pa ttern. I will first describe our earlier work on two-dimensional interloc ked fabrics\, showing how jamming can be triggered by external confinemen t to reversibly and dramatically stiffen chain mail sheets\, and how a mo dified Maxwell criterion predicts the in-plane and out-of-plane rigidity of torus-knot tessellated fabrics from their connectivity alone. Building on these principles\, I will present a general design framework that tra nslates arbitrary crystalline networks into three-dimensional polycatenat ed particle assemblies. Under small loads\, PAMs behave like non-Newtonia n fluids\, exhibiting both shear-thinning and shear-thickening responses\ ; at larger strains\, they jam into solid-like lattices with nonlinear\, hysteretic stress-strain behavior reminiscent of granular media. I will s how that this fluid-solid duality\, along with the critical jamming strai n\, can be programmed through particle geometry and catenation topology\, and that it persists across length scales\, from centimeter-scale printe d samples to micron-scale structures whose shape can be reversibly reconf igured using electrostatic forces. Discovered almost 70 years ag o\, this phenomenon implies that the universe is "left-handed." Although we have a very successful theory\, the Standard Model of Particle Physic s\, which agrees with scores of experimental tests\, includes parity viol ations in an ad hoc way. There are hints that the Standard Model should b reak down at very high energies\, restoring parity symmetry. There are vi able conjectures for how that might come about\, and much of High Energy Physics tries to reach the energy scales where this breakdown might occur .\n\nThis talk describes a different approach\, trading very high energy interactions for extremely precise measurements at lower energies. The MO LLER experiment at Jefferson Lab will measure parity violation in electro n-electron scattering for which the Standard Model makes a precise predic tion. Disagreement between experiment and theory at this level would indi cate "new physics" at energies beyond the reach of current high energy co llider facilities. After introducing the key concepts\, I will describe t he challenges of making this ultra precise measurement and the timeline f or executing the experiment. Dr. Sanacora completed an NIH sponsored Med ical Scientist Training Program at the SUNY Stony Brook\, earning his Ph. D. in Physiology and Biophysics in 1992 and his M.D. degree in 1994. He l ater completed the Clinical Neuroscientist Training Program Residency in the Department of Psychiatry\, and an NIH funded Neuroimaging Scientist T raining Program Fellowship at Yale University. His research has employed both preclinical and clinical studies in attempts to expand our understan ding of the pathophysiology of mood and neurodegenerative disorders and t o use this information in developing new approaches for treating and prev enting the disorders. He has served as PI on a broad range of NIH\, found ation\, and industry sponsored studies. At multiple levels these studies have helped highlight novel pathophysiological mechanisms involving the a mino acid neurotransmitter systems in relation to mood and neurodegenerat ive disorders and contributed significantly to the development\, testing\ , and actual clinical application of novel treatment approaches targeting these systems. Most recently he has expanded his focus to explore mechan isms of more efficiently and cost effectively bringing nascent\, neurosci ence informed treatment approaches to clinical practice. Dr. Sanacora rec eived the Anna-Monkia Stiftung international award for the investigation of the biological substrate and functional disturbances of depression in 2009 and the Joel Elkes Research Award for Outstanding contributions to P sychopharmacology from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology in 2011\, and most recently the 2022 Association for Clinical and Translati onal Sciences award for Team Science for these efforts. This talk sugg ests how to relate to this object of knowledge\, or Afro-Asian radicalism . I see this task as an exercise in probing a deep well of commitment suf fused with political defeats but also yearning to learn\, evolve\, and ad vance found within the intervening space between Black radicalism and Jap anese intellectual and creative activities in the twentieth century. \n\n In Japanese\, an interstice is defined as ma (間). Attunement toward such a point of entanglement is of utmost importance to Afro-Asian radicalism. The details will be culled from Black Radical Thought in Japan (Universi ty of Washington Press\, 2026)\, which delineates Japanese intellectuals' commitment to Black struggle cultivated through the study and translatio n of Black texts\, many connected to the midcentury U.S. Left.\n\nAbout t he speaker:\nYuichiro Onishi is a scholar of African American intellectua l history\, who locates himself in the field of Afro-Asian studies. He al so continues to investigate the genesis of occupied Okinawa. He began his academic career in the Center for Ethnic Studies at the Borough of Manha ttan Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY). His mos t recent book\, Black Radical Thought in Japan: An Afro-Asian Intellectua l History (University of Washington Press)\, was published in July 2026.\ n\nProfessor Onishi's research specialties include: Black radicalism and internationalism\; African American intellectual history\; Asian American studies\; and transnational American studies. He is an associate profess or of African American and African Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota.
