DESCRIPTION:There is compelling evidence that convictions and incarceratio
n have negative impacts on labor market outcomes. But research also shows
that offenders have relatively low levels of human capital even before a
ny contact with the justice system. Thus\, accurately characterizing an o
ffender's employment profile and the plausible impact of the justice syst
em has been challenging due to this population's non-trivial involvement
in both formal and informal sectors and the non-linear relationship betwe
en criminal justice involvement and economic outcomes (e.g. the first cri
minal record playing a critical role in life-long employment outcomes). W
e use high-quality longitudinal criminal justice records through CJARS in
tegrated with extensive labor market data (IRS W-2s and ACS self-reported
work) to examine the effect of criminal justice interactions on labor ma
rket outcomes in an event study framework. Employment and earnings are tr
acked in both formal administrative as well as self-reported employment s
tatus in survey responses\, providing an opportunity to identify informal
ity and its implications. In this research\, we highlight the importance
of periodicity of criminal justice events and the role of shifts to infor
mal employment\, particularly when using event studies and administrative
data.

DESCRIPTION:The graduate students of the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Wor
king Group invite you to attend a book talk with Professor Elena Shih as
she discusses her 2023 publication: "Manufacturing Freedom: Sex Work\, An
ti-Trafficking Rehab\, and the Racial Wages of Rescue." A reception follo
ws the talk.\n\nRSVP directly to EADS to attend the reception: https://ti
nyurl.com/rcsbooktalk\n\nAbout the book:\n\nSex worker rescue programs ha
ve become a core focus of the global movement to combat human trafficking
. While these rehabilitation programs promise freedom from enslavement an
d redemptive wages for former sex workers\, such organizations actually p
ropagate a moral economy of low‑wage women's work that obfuscates relatio
ns of race\, gender\, national power\, and inequality. Manufacturing Free
dom is an ethnographic exploration of two American organizations that off
er vocational training in jewelry production to women migrants in China a
nd Thailand as a path out of sex work. In this innovative study\, Elena S
hih argues that anti‑trafficking rescue and rehabilitation projects profi
t off persistent labor abuse of women workers and imagined but savvily ma
rketed narratives of redemption.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nElena Shih is M
anning Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnic Studies at Brow
n University\, where she directs a human trafficking research cluster thr
ough the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice.\n\nEvent organized
by the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Group and APSI with support from the
program in Asian American & Diaspora Studies\, the program in Gender\, S
exuality\, and Feminist Studies\, and the Franklin Humanities Institute (
FHI) at Duke University.

DESCRIPTION:March 28th at 5:30pm\n"Dangerous Constellations"\nFriedl 225\,
East Campus\, Duke University\n \nRonald Mendoza-de Jesús's new book\, C
atastrophic Historicism: Reading Julia de de Burgos Dangerously (Fordham
UP\, 2023)\, unsettles the historicist constitution of Julia de Burgos (1
914-53)\, Puerto Rico's most iconic writer-a critical task that necessita
tes redefining the concept of historicism. While critiques of historicism
as a realism leave untouched the sovereignty of the historian\, Catastro
phic Historicism insists that reading the text of history requires an att
unement to danger-a modality that interrupts historicism by infusing the
past with a contingency that evades appropriation.\n \nMarch 29th at noon
(lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: \nSovereign Cosmopoiesis and Unwo
rldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\, Duke University \n \nBuild
ing on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the critical humanities has unde
rtaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argues that this turn is enabled
by an idealization of the concept of worlding that disavows the desire f
or sovereignty that structures the process of world-constitution\, howeve
r piously or altruistically the latter may be construed. To make this cas
e\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading of Glissant's "La barque o
uverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worlding otherwise generates th
e semblance of a "New World" of relationality and non-totalitarian unity-
in-diversity by obfuscating the structural role that the production and a
ppropriation of racialized/sexed abjection plays within cosmopoiesis.\n \
nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested pre-read: Éduoard Glissant'
s "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from Poetique de la Relation/Poe

DESCRIPTION:March 29th at noon (lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: Sove
reign Cosmopoiesis and Unworldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\,
Duke University \n \nBuilding on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the c
ritical humanities has undertaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argue
s that this turn is enabled by an idealization of the concept of worlding
that disavows the desire for sovereignty that structures the process of
world-constitution\, however piously or altruistically the latter may be
construed. To make this case\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading
of Glissant's "La barque ouverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worl
ding otherwise generates the semblance of a "New World" of relationality
and non-totalitarian unity-in-diversity by obfuscating the structural rol
e that the production and appropriation of racialized/sexed abjection pla
ys within cosmopoiesis.\n \nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested
pre-read: Éduoard Glissant's "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from
Poetique de la Relation/Poetics of Relation. The French and English can
be found here: https://duke.box.com/s/ctxni70p13qb2bkyxwc0ouw2vaw1a2w0. \

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on what approaches to gender and sexu
ality can tell us about Okinawa and what approaches to Okinawa can tell u
s about gender and sexuality. As a colonized and occupied space\, Okinawa
existed and continues to exist at a nodal point between the Japanese and
American Empires. The specifically gendered and sexualized relations bet
ween Okinawans\, Japanese\, and Americans have profound impacts on everyd
ay life and political possibilities for people living in Okinawa. As mode
s of connection\, identification\, and expression\, gender and sexuality
have a lot to tell us about the ways that the people in these spaces inte
ract and what links can be made between Okinawa and other spaces.\n\nThis
workshop will bring together scholars working on Okinawa from multiple d
isciplines\, including literature\, anthropology\, history\, and drawing
from transnational\, postcolonial\, indigenous\, feminist and queer appro
aches. Presenters will talk about their own work\, engage with one anothe
r's work through questions and discussion\, and discuss the future of sch
olarship on Okinawa.\n\nThis workshop is open to all\, and participation
from the wider community\, both inside and outside academia\, is very wel
come.\n\nPotential subjects of discussion include sexual violence\, women
's participation in protest movements\, the intimate and the everyday\, i
nterracial relationships and children\, queer futurity and protest\, mili
tarization\, bodies and pleasures\, and indigenous practices.

DESCRIPTION:A documentary on Frantz Fanon\, whose life and work embodies a
ll the issues of\nFrench colonial history. As a doctor\, he revolutionize
d the practice of psychiatry\, seeking in the relations of domination of
colonial societies the\nfoundations of the pathologies of his patients in
Blida. And as an activist\, he brought together through his action and h
is history\, the anger of peoples\ncrushed by centuries of colonial oppre
ssion. He has left an incomparable body of work which has made him one of
the most studied French authors across the Atlantic.

DESCRIPTION:Efforts to repurpose CRISPR-Cas systems have produced a suite
of genome editing tools\, including programmable nucleases\, base editors
\, and prime editors. These tools have greatly enabled the study of genom
es and gene function\, and their advancement to therapeutic development h
as demonstrated promise for addressing a host of unmet medical needs. Our
understanding of how endogenous cellular processes influence the activit
y of these tools\, however\, lags far behind their application and\, due
to the rapid pace of technology development\, behind efforts to build new
approaches. Our work focuses on identifying cellular determinants of gen
ome editing tools to better understand how they work. Our results provide
key insights into how those tools interact with the cellular environment
and suggest general strategies for improvement.

DESCRIPTION:Following the ecological and infrastructural turn in media stu
dies\, this dissertation project investigates cultural responses to and r
epresentations of planetary ecological issues. By bringing together 'medi
a events\,' eco-art and media activism in or about the Amazon Forest\, it
embraces a cross-media approach to examine the ecological footprint of m
edia linked to the Amazon within the contemporary context marked by commu
nications revolution\, climate change activism and impending ecological c
atastrophe.\n\nThe project also shows the important place Amazonian ecome
dia has in affecting dominant techniques of environmental communication -
namely framing\, flows and mediation - even as media's material producti
on and processes might remain complicit to extractivism and environmental
degradation.\n\nIn foregrounding emerging media and communicative practi
ces mainly by Amazonian indigenous actors and organizations that at once
promote a transformative engagement with tropical geographic spaces as we
ll as with media's extractivist effects\, the project ultimately helps to
broaden understanding of what role the Amazon is currently playing in bo
th ecological geopolitics as well as mainstream media and visual culture.

DESCRIPTION:The annual McGinnis Memorial Lecture was established by the st
aff and students of the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology in 197
9 to honor the memory of James William McGinnis\, Jr.\, a beloved Duke do
ctoral candidate working in Bill Joklik's laboratory who died unexpectedl
y in a canoeing accident.\n\nAdolfo García-Sastre\, PhD\, is Professor of
Medicine and Microbiology and Co-director of the Global Health & Emergin
g Pathogens Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. \n\
nThe García-Sastre Laboratory is focused on exploring virus-host interact
ions with an emphasis on virus regulation of innate and adaptive immune r
esponses. The outcome of these interactions not only determines disease s
everity but also influences the development of protective immunity result
ing from viral infection and/or vaccination. The team has developed sever
al techniques (reverse genetics)\, which allow for the genetic manipulati
on of the genomes of several virus families including influenza virus and
Newcastle disease virus. Other viruses being studied include Zika virus\
, Dengue virus\, West Nile virus\, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever vi
rus. These techniques are currently being used in several research areas
including: i) characterization of virus-encoded virulence factors\, ii) i
dentification of virus-encoded antagonists of the interferon system\, iii
) virus replication and gene expression\, iv) immune regulation of influe
nza replication\, and v) vaccine development. Reverse genetics are also b
eing utilized to generate virus vectors based on influenza virus and Newc
astle disease virus. These viruses are effective inducers of humoral and
cellular immune responses. Live attenuated influenza virus vaccines are b
eing generated by genetic modification of the influenza virus-encoded int
erferon antagonist that was originally identified by the laboratory. Also
\, recombinant viruses can be produced that express protective antigens o
f other pathogens for which no safe attenuated vaccine strains are availa
ble.

DESCRIPTION:The Samuel Dubois Cook Center on Social Equity's most recent c
ohort of the Diversity Initiative for Tenure in Economics (DITE) program
will be convening in Washington\, DC for their 2024 workshop on April 2-4
\, 2024.\n\nA critical mission of the Cook Center is training the next ge
neration of scholars in the social sciences\, with a focus on economics a
s it undergirds and informs most of the research at the Center. This miss
ion could not thrive without the Diversity Initiative for Tenure in Econo
mics (DITE)\, which began in 2008 in response to the gross underrepresent
ation of minority economists (particularly Black\, Latinx\, and native Am
erican economists) in the ranks of university faculty.\n\nThrough mentori
ng and workshops\, DITE aids the transition from junior faculty status to
associate professor for economists from these underrepresented racial an
d ethnic groups.\n \nSince its inception\, DITE has assisted fourteen coh
orts of early and mid-career professors of economics advance toward tenur
e. Of the 101 past fellows\, thirty-one now have tenure\; notably\, two a
re deans\, four are department chairs\, five are center directors\, and t
wo are full professors. There are now distinguished professors among the
past fellows as well.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 2 at 9:30 am ET\, the Ocean Diplomacy Worki
ng Group and the Rethinking Diplomacy Program are hosting a webinar with
David Balton and David Freestone on the United Nations Convention on the
Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). UNCLOS\, adopted in 1982 and entered into force
in 1994\, serves as a constitution for the oceans. It includes guidelines
for states' navigational rights\, maritime zones and boundaries\, and pr
ocedures for maritime related disputes on the high seas. The United State
s recognizes UNCLOS as customary international law\, but it has never acc
eded to the treaty. \n\nDavid Balton and David Freestone bring decades of
experience negotiating implementing agreements under UNCLOS and other ma
ritime related treaties\, and they will bring rich insight into the histo
ry of UNCLOS\, challenges in implementation\, and the potential of the U.
S. ratifying the treaty in the future. In addition\, Dr. John Virdin of D
uke University will be moderating the webinar. Please join us for in incr
edibly informative meeting with two of the world's leading ocean diplomac
y scholars and practitioners.\n\nThe event is being organized by Brianna
Elliott\, a PhD student in Marine Science and Conservation.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is excited to host Prof. Steffen L
indert for a seminar on Tuesday\, April 2 at 3pm. Learn more about Prof.
Lindert's research here: https://research.cbc.osu.edu/lindert.1/\n\n\nAbs
tract: Mass spectrometry-based methods such as covalent labeling\, surfa
ce induced dissociation (SID) or ion mobility (IM) are increasingly used
to obtain information about protein structure. However\, in contrast to o
ther high-resolution structure determination methods\, this information i
s not sufficient to deduce all atom coordinates and can only inform on ce
rtain elements of structure\, such as solvent exposure of individual resi
dues\, properties of protein-protein interfaces or protein shape. Computa
tional methods are needed to predict high-resolution protein structures f
rom the mass spectrometry (MS) data. Our group develops algorithms within
the Rosetta software package that use mass spectrometry data to guide pr
otein structure prediction. These algorithms can incorporate several diff
erent types of mass spectrometry data\, such as covalent labeling\, surfa
ce induced dissociation\, and ion mobility. We developed scoring function
s that assess the agreement of residue exposure with covalent labeling da
ta\, the agreement of protein-protein interface energies with SID data an
d the agreement of protein model shapes with collision cross section (CCS
) IM measurements. We subsequently rescored Rosetta models generated with
de novo protein folding and protein-protein docking and we were able to
accurately predict protein structure from MS labeling\, SID and IM data.
Future work is focusing on developing custom machine learning models to p
redict protein structure from MS data. \n\nHosted by the Department of Ch
emistry

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAll-solid-state batteries are regarded as one of th
e future energy storage technologies capable of competing with the state-
of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Despite tremendous progress\, the performanc
e of all-solid-state metal batteries remains unsatisfactory. In this semi
nar\, I will present the key challenges confronting all-solid-state batte
ries\, ranging from fundamental knowledge gap in understanding major fail
ure mechanisms to issues in solid-state battery manufacturing issues. The
complex origins of battery failure necessitate multimodal tools capable
of quantifying void and dendrites\, identifying chemical and mechanical p
roperties and monitoring the processes in situ. We have developed a suite
of methods for structural\, chemical\, and mechanical characterizations
that include operando-SEM\, ToF-SIMS\, and nanoindentation-based stiffnes
s mapping. Materials innovations are equally important. We show how soft
organic redox materials could enable intimate interfacial contact with so
lid electrolytes under low operating pressure. Additionally\, we have dev
eloped an oxysulfide glass electrolyte that forms a thin\, dense\, self-l
imiting interphase against Na metal and exhibits a fully dense glass micr
ostructure. We investigated the role of an interlayer between a lithium m
etal anode and solid electrolyte that prevents lithium dendrite formation
and allow reversible lithium plating and stripping over 2500 cycles. Fin
ally\, we will discuss our recent efforts in battery manufacturing and th
e establishment of a battery prototyping facility at UH.

DESCRIPTION:We have learned much about the origin and evolution of the Uni
verse\, but its main ingredients remain a mystery: atoms only make up onl
y 5%. The rest consists of dark matter and dark energy\, components for w
hich we lack a fundamental physical theory. Better observations are neede
d to guide theory\, and weak gravitational lensing plays an important rol
e in mapping the evolution of the large-scale structure which will allow
us to distinguish between cosmological models. However\, many challenges
remain if we are to extract cosmological information from the complex dat
a that are being collected.
