DESCRIPTION:In the real world\, objects are discrete physical entities - y
 our coffee mug either is or is not in your hand. As a result\, both in ev
 eryday life and in perception and memory research\, there is a tendency t
 o use a physical metaphor to understand our mental representations: peopl
 e tend to think of an object they are trying to perceive or remember as e
 ither in mind or not in their mind\, and to say that we hold items in mem
 ory\, as we hold real objects in our hand. In the domains of visual worki
 ng memory\, visual long-term memory and perceptual awareness\, this discr
 ete thinking is often formalized using models that fit psychophysical dat
 a\, and are based on the premise that people often completely lose an ite
 m from memory or completely fail to encode or perceive an object. In this
  talk\, I'll review our recent work re-examining this view and suggesting
  a simple alternative model motivated by neural population coding and rep
 resentational geometry. This model accounts for large swaths of data on v
 isual memory and perceptual awareness with only a concept of a continuous
 ly varying memory match signal\, and without any concept of discrete all-
 or-none failures. A core aspect of this model - key to understanding this
  model's simplicity - is that the underlying representation of even simpl
 e features tends to be very high-dimensional (e.g.\, as in population cod
 es\, or in the features extracted from deep nets)\, and that in high-dime
 nsional spaces\, the strength of representational match signals tends to 
 fall off highly non-linearly. Thus\, I'll argue considering the complex\,
  high-dimensional nature of the neural representation of stimuli can\, co
 unterintuitively\, lead to very straightforward cognitive models of perce
 ption and memory.

DESCRIPTION:In life's first two decades\, children who know little about t
 he world grow into young adults who harness rich knowledge of environment
 al structure to guide their behavior and accomplish their goals. In my ta
 lk\, I will argue that the development of goal-directed behavior depends 
 on learning to learn. I will present a series of studies examining how th
 e computations and neural mechanisms that underlie value-guided memory\, 
 flexible reinforcement learning\, and strategic exploration change from c
 hildhood to adulthood\, and enable individuals to increasingly tailor the
 ir behaviors to the demands of varied environments across development.

DESCRIPTION:The brain is an organ of communication. There is no single pat
 hway for any neurobehavioral function or dysfunction. Drug abuse and addi
 ction may at first appear to be due to the particular action of a drug at
  a neurotransmitter receptor or other physiological target process\, but 
 because of the intricate communication among neural systems\, actions at 
 a particular receptor quickly involves a much broader array of interactin
 g systems. Thus\, nicotine effects on nicotinic receptors and opiate effe
 cts on opioid receptors quickly involve directly and indirectly many othe
 r neural (and glial) systems involved in drug abuse and addiction. With d
 rug reinforcement the involvement of dopaminergic innervation of the nucl
 eus accumbens is the most obviously important interacting neural system\,
  but there are many other interacting systems that play important roles. 
 This can complicate understanding of the neurobehavioral bases of drug ad
 diction\, but it also presents many opportunities for developing effectiv
 e therapeutic treatments. By investigating these interactions can provide
  a more accurate understanding of neural bases of addiction and open mult
 iple new opportunities for therapeutic treatment to reduce addiction. Thi
 s talk will present the series of studies we have conducted with the rat 
 drug self-administration model investigating drug interactions to elucida
 te nicotinic as well other drugs of abuse.

DESCRIPTION:LLMs are widely regarded as alien intelligences\, systems whos
 e cognitive operations are fundamentally unlike our own. Apparent similar
 ities to human cognition are therefore often seen as the result of anthro
 pomorphic projection. I argue that this framing is mistaken. LLMs clearly
  differ from humans in important respects\, including their physical subs
 trate\, learning history\, and the environments with which they interact.
  These differences make it all the more striking that contemporary LLM-ba
 sed systems converge with human cognition on a number of principles of co
 gnitive organization with longstanding support in cognitive science. I id
 entify structural correspondences across five dimensions: inferential org
 anization\, computational architecture\, representational structure\, pre
 diction-driven learning\, and reinforcement-learning-like mechanisms supp
 orting goal-directed control. These correspondences support a broader mod
 el of intelligent cognition in which core principles long used to explain
  human intelligence also characterize contemporary LLM-based systems.
