For Latino adults-who face e levated risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and are dispro portionately concentrated in service\, manufacturing\, and construction j obs with limited schedule control-occupational exposures may be an underr ecognized driver of this disparity. Shift work\, in particular\, may comp ound risk through chronic circadian disruption\, yet its cognitive conseq uences remain unexamined in this population. We introduce a novel applica tion of longitudinal data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos and its neurocognitive aging ancillary study\, using a detaile d shift-work index that captures both schedule type and night-work freque ncy to assess cognitive function and change over roughly seven years amon g adults employed at baseline. We find that regular night-shift work is a ssociated with persistently lower processing speed and verbal fluency\, w hile other shift-work patterns show no consistent disadvantage-positionin g schedule structure as a modifiable lever for reducing cognitive aging d isparities. Many of the trees were planted directly by the French\, and trees planted by successive regimes also followed the mo del of those earliest French treescapes. While there is much to cherish a bout Saigon's trees\, they were rooted in a larger colonial discourse thr ough which the French simultaneously justified colonial rule and denigrat ed indigenous Vietnamese modes of habitation. \n\nSimilar dynamics can al so be found in post-war and post-reform Ho Chi Minh City. Like the French \, contemporary government and city leaders also assert their legitimacy through urban tree planting programs\, even as they routinely ignore loca l experience and knowledge by felling trees to make way for infrastructur e projects. City residents regularly seek to resist attempts to fell tree s\, but overt political responses are curtailed by the political controls imposed by Vietnam's single party state\, and they are forced to turn to alternative approaches.\n\nOne such approach\, which I call a poetic pol itics of shade\, emphasizes aesthetics and affective\, embodied experienc es with urban shade\, and mobilizes intense forms of devotion to the tree s. While the people do not win every victory against the developers' chai nsaws\, poetic politics builds from and reinforces enduring relations to urban shade trees that may have the capacity to be effective over the lon g haul.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nErik Harms is Professor of Anthropology an d Chair of the Council on Southeast Asia Studies at Yale University. This ongoing pr ospective study follows 1\,209 8-year-old children (50% female\; wide var iation in race/ethnicity) from 11 diverse cultures globally (China\, Colo mbia\, Italy\, Jordan\, Kenya\, Philippines\, Thailand\, Sweden\, and sev eral USA ethnic groups) through young adulthood. This presentation includ es two exemplar studies within PAC. \n\nLaura will describe a study exami ning the predictors and development of future orientation across 10 years and countries with varying levels of income and cultural orientations. I n particular\, she will explore how maternal and parental monitoring\, fa mily obligation expectations\, individualism\, collectivism\, and conform ity are related to individuals' ability to envision\, plan for\, and inve st in their future between ages 10 and 20. She finds that future orientat ion developed significantly differently across countries\, following nonl inear trajectories\, with parental influences varying by parenting dimens ion\, parent gender\, and economic-cultural context.\n\nKen will describe a study of childhood social information-processing predictors of young-a dult success in education and employment\, health\, mental health\, and w ell-being. He finds that skills of social interpretation\, impulse contro l\, social problem solving\, and social decision-making robustly predict success in all four domains\, even controlling for family socioeconomic f actors and nonsocial cognitive skills. In contrast\, cognitive skills pro vide little predictive power after controlling for social information-pro cessing skills. As a result\, both in ev eryday life and in perception and memory research\, there is a tendency t o use a physical metaphor to understand our mental representations: peopl e tend to think of an object they are trying to perceive or remember as e ither in mind or not in their mind\, and to say that we hold items in mem ory\, as we hold real objects in our hand. In the domains of visual worki ng memory\, visual long-term memory and perceptual awareness\, this discr ete thinking is often formalized using models that fit psychophysical dat a\, and are based on the premise that people often completely lose an ite m from memory or completely fail to encode or perceive an object. In this talk\, I'll review our recent work re-examining this view and suggesting a simple alternative model motivated by neural population coding and rep resentational geometry. This model accounts for large swaths of data on v isual memory and perceptual awareness with only a concept of a continuous ly varying memory match signal\, and without any concept of discrete all- or-none failures. A core aspect of this model - key to understanding this model's simplicity - is that the underlying representation of even simpl e features tends to be very high-dimensional (e.g.\, as in population cod es\, or in the features extracted from deep nets)\, and that in high-dime nsional spaces\, the strength of representational match signals tends to fall off highly non-linearly. Thus\, I'll argue considering the complex\, high-dimensional nature of the neural representation of stimuli can\, co unterintuitively\, lead to very straightforward cognitive models of perce ption and memory. This talk presents recent research exa mining how aspects of human population and dynamics impact the environmen t and\, in turn\, how they respond to environmental change. Research is p resented from rural regions in Latin America\, Africa\, Asia\, and Califo rnia. Population has long played a key role in environmental change\; the environment\, in turn\, has long impacted human population. However\, we still lack an overarching theory of population-environment dynamics. Tow ards filling this gap\, the presentation features case studies\, qualitat ive and quantitative methods\, and primary data and secondary data. Analy tical methods are largely statistical models with complementary qualitati ve analyses. Results suggest significant roles that population play direc tly and indirectly on environmental dynamics and various forms of human p opulation responses to environmental change. Balinska will speak about her care er journey and leadership development through the lens of "public purpose ." Her talk is entitled "What Public\, What Purpose? 40 Years in Internat ional Journalism and Education."\n\nWith experience in international educ ation exchange\, journalism and non-profit leadership\, Maria Balinska is working to support people and initiatives that further international col laboration and civic dialogue. Maria spent the first two decades of her c areer at BBC News in London where she worked for ten years\, until 2009\, as Editor World Current Affairs Radio. After a Nieman fellowship at Harv ard\, she founded Latitude News\, a "local-global mashup" experiment in r eporting America's links with the rest of the world. In 2014\, Maria joi ned the launch team of The Conversation US\, an independent news and comm entary website authored by academics and edited by journalists for the ge neral public and for four years was its editor-in-chief\, based in Boston . In 2019\, she took on the role of executive director of the US-UK Fulbr ight Commission in London where she served for six years\, significantly advancing the key strategic goal of making international exchange opportu nities affordable and attractive to talented individuals\, whatever their background or financial circumstance. In January 2026 she joined the Un iversity of Oxford's Centre for Democratic Resilience as a practitioner a ssociate and July this year she became a fellow at Finnish university LUT 's System Earth Collegium. A central feature of Caribbean poetics has been a pictorial mode of representing the natural landscape and the complex multicultural societies that have taken root in the archipelago. Verbal and visual ar ts converge in the creation of entangled ways of sensing and portraying t he vulnerable yet resilient terrain of human interaction.

\n

The Fra nklin Humanities Institute assembles an outstanding group of poets\, arti sts\, and scholars for a wide-ranging conversation about the interconnect ions between verbal depiction and visual aesthetics in the portrayal of t he natural and socio-cultural worlds.

\n

The Caribbean offers a par ticularly fecund eco-site from which to engage in such a conversation. Se a and land\, plantation and garden\, hurricane and drought\, cultivation and extraction\, human and more-than-human life have long shaped the regi on's social histories and imaginative practices. Several generations of l eading Caribbean poets have continually re-imagined the terms through whi ch landscape\, ecology\, embodiment\, memory\, violence\, beauty\, and su rvival can be perceived\, represented and understood.

\n

Across a day and a half of presentations and conversations\, the symposium addresses the question of how poetry in concert with the visual arts might help us to view these relations from an entangled perspective. How do poetic and visual practices intersect to register the histories deeply layered in Ca ribbean landscapes and seascapes? What might Caribbean poetics contribute to our thinking about the planetary ecological crisis\, racialized histo ries\, and possibilities for living otherwise?
