DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the many different ethical issues t
hat can arise with data management and sharing and strategies to address
those issues. Topics covered will include a framework for analyzing ethic
al cases\, the use of secondary data in research\, working with human par
ticipants\, senstive ecosystems\, AI\, and the impact of laws on data sha
ring. We will also explore the application of diversity and equity princi
ples to open science and data sharing. For instance\, how can researchers
ethically collect\, handle\, and share data from certain communities\, s
uch as Indigenous People? This workshop will contain both lecture and sma
ll group discussion where participants will engage with key ethical conce
pts and apply those concepts to a case-study. This event is open to non-D
uke participants. This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate Schoo
l RCR Credit (GS714) and 200-level faculty and staff RCR.

DESCRIPTION:There are many federal and private funders who require data ma
nagement (and sharing) plans as part of a grant application. NIH implemen
ted a new Data Management and Sharing Policy in early 2023 and other fund
ing agencies\, such as NSF\, are implementing revised public access and d
ata sharing policies in early 2025 to comply with the "Nelson Memo" and t
he Gold Standard of Science. This workshop will cover the components of a
data management and sharing plan\, what makes a strong plan and how to a
dhere to it\, and where to find guidance\, tools\, resources\, and assist
ance for building funder-based plans. We will also discuss how to make da
ta management plans actionable and meaningful living documents to support
research integrity\, reproducibility\, reuse\, and verification of resul
ts. This workshop is a collaboration of Duke University Libraries\, the O

DESCRIPTION:The importance of reproducibility\, replication\, and transpar
ency in the research endeavor is increasingly discussed in academia. This
workshop will introduce the concept of "reproducibility" and foundationa
l strategies that can increase the reproducibility of your work particula
rly related to organization\, documentation\, literate coding techniques\
, version control\, and archiving data and code for future access and use
. We will also present a protocol\, the TIER protocol\, as a tool that gr
aduate students or others can use that are first approaching reproducibil
ity. In the second half of the workshop we will present some tools for re
producible workflows like git and its integrations with RStudio and Zenod
o\, and provide resources for hands-on learning and practice. This event i
s open to non-Duke participants. This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of

DESCRIPTION:Research data have value beyond their original purpose and by
sharing or "publishing" your data you can support open science\, reproduc
ibility\, and future innovation. This workshop will explore strategies an
d best practices for formally publishing your data in a data repository.
Topics covered will include new modes of publishing in academia\, the use
of data and metadata standards to support interoperability and harmoniza
tion\, an overview of repository options and key features\, examples of d
isciplinary repositories\, and data publishing methods to increase the im
pact of research projects and support the FAIR Guiding Principles (i.e.\,
  Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable). Participants will
engage in a break-out activity where they will practice finding and asse

DESCRIPTION:The sharing of research data has become increasingly important
to federal and private funders and journal publishers for a number of re
 asons (research transparency\, reproducibility\, return on investment\, n
ew research on existing data\, etc.). With the latest requirements from t
he National Institutes of Health (NIH) for Data Management and Sharing Pl
ans (https://sharing.nih.gov/)\, there are legitimate concerns about how
data from human beings can ethically and safely be shared. This workshop
will talk about the various challenges that arise when considering how to
share human participants data in DMSPs and potential ways that these cha

Duke and beyond (data sharing consent language\, controlled access reposi
