ing\n\nReturning to the Icelandic landscape left behind by her great-grea
t-grandparents in 1888\, "Til Íslands" (meaning "To Iceland" in Icelandic
) documents the delicate experience of the filmmaker's reconnection with
a land and people in the midst of dramatic environmental change. Shot on
8mm and 16mm film\, along with cameraless imagery created by placing plan
ts\, seaweed\, and wool directly on the film\, this experimental document
ary short invites viewers into a conversation between past and present\,
in which the plants\, animals\, water\, and people of the landscape all t
ake part.\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition\n\nThe exhibition features work creat
ed at Geiger's family farm on Lake Apavatn and at the Nes Artist Residenc
y in Skagaströnd\, including still and moving images\; phytograms of plan
ts\, seaweed\, and wool\; and a quilt naturally dyed with lupine\, rhubar
b\, and lichen.\n\nWorks from the exhibition will be available for purcha
se following the closing of the exhibition.\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n\nEmma
Geiger is an artist\, photographer\, and musician from Hopkinton\, New H
ampshire\, working with natural materials and analog processes. She holds
an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Duke University\, and a
graduate certificate in Visual Storytelling from the Salt Institute for D
ocumentary Studies. In 2025 she was awarded the Cassilhaus Biannual Trave
l Fellowship for her documentary project exploring her ancestral connecti
on to Iceland. \n\nGeiger writes and performs music and has released two
EPs - Haven (2022) and Reverse Bloom (2024). Across her visual work and m
usic\, nostalgia\, solitude\, and a lifelong relationship with the natura

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Biological systems are organized across interacting
scales\, from molecular networks and metabolic pathways to cells\, tissue
s\, microbial communities\, and their environments\, yet many computation
al models remain difficult to connect\, reuse\, or extend beyond the scal
e or formalism for which they were originally built. In this talk\, I wil
l introduce Compositional Systems Biology\, an approach for building mult
iscale biological models from interoperable processes with explicit inter
faces\, shared state representations\, and well-defined orchestration pat
terns governing when and how model components are executed. At the core o
f this work is Vivarium\, an open-source platform for multiscale simulati
on that integrates diverse modeling formalisms -- including ODEs\, stocha
stic kinetics\, constraint-based models\, agent-based dynamics\, and rule
-based logic -- within a unified execution framework. I will describe how
this framework has been used in whole-cell modeling\, including vEcoli\,
a comprehensive model of E. coli integrating mechanistic submodels of me
tabolism\, transcription\, translation\, macromolecular synthesis\, and c
ell division\, and then discuss how the same compositional principles are
being extended toward microbial systems\, host-microbiome interactions\,
and spatially resolved multicellular tissue models. Throughout the talk\
, I will emphasize how executable composition can link biological structu
re to function\, support transparent model reuse and validation\, and cre
ate new opportunities for collaborative modeling across systems biology\,
computational medicine\, and tissue-scale simulation.\n\nBio: Eran Agmon
is an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Med
icine and a member of the Center for Cell Analysis and Modeling. His rese
arch focuses on software infrastructure and theory for compositional\, mu
ltiscale biological modeling\, motivated by a longstanding interest in ce
lls as both integrated molecular systems and adaptive agents that functio
n within\, respond to\, and reshape their environments. He is a Principal
Investigator on DARPA's Simulating Microbial Systems program\, where his
group is developing hybrid simulations of E. coli that integrate mechani
stic\, agent-based\, and constraint-based models\, and a co-Investigator
with the Center for Reproducible Biomedical Modeling\, contributing to co
mmunity standards\, reusable simulation pipelines\, and infrastructure fo
r interoperable computational biology.

DESCRIPTION:The Sperling Center for Jewish Studies at Duke University is p
leased to present its Undergraduate Documentary Film Festival\, featuring
original documentary films created by Duke undergraduates exploring Jewi
sh history\, culture\, religion\, memory\, and contemporary Jewish life.\
n\nDrawing on archival research\, oral histories\, interviews\, and perso
nal narratives\, student filmmakers bring Jewish Studies scholarship to l
ife through the medium of film. This year's projects explore the history
and contemporary experiences of Morocco's Sephardic Jewish community and
the complex dynamics of Jewish-Muslim relations\, as well as the story of
the family of Keith Siegel\, who was taken hostage during the October 7
attacks. Through these films\, students examine questions of identity\, m
emory\, resilience\, intercommunal relations\, and the ways global events
resonate within local communities\, including at Duke and in Durham.\n\n
The festival celebrates the creativity and intellectual engagement of Duk
e undergraduates while highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of Jewis
h Studies. By combining rigorous research with visual storytelling\, stud
ents offer fresh perspectives on Jewish experiences past and present and
invite audiences to consider how documentary film can deepen our understa
nding of history\, culture\, and collective memory.\n\nFollowing the scre
enings\, audience members will have an opportunity to engage with the stu
dent filmmakers in a discussion about their research\, filmmaking process
\, and the broader questions raised by their work.\n\nDinner will precede
the event at 6pm in the Ruby Lounge. This event is free and open to the
public.
