DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Jennifer Feltman as she shares her new research
linking a mysterious sculpted head in the Nasher's collection with the C
athedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. Her work illustrates the exciting potent
ial of combining art history and scientific research to reveal the origin
s of sculptural fragments\, allowing us to understand\, for the first tim
e\, their original meaning and use. A wine and cheese reception will foll
ow the talk. \n\nCo-sponsored by the Center for Medieval and Renaissance
Studies. Admission is free. Registration is required. Go to the event web
site (at More Information) to register. \n\nDr. Feltman is Associate Prof
essor of Art History at the University of Alabama specializing in the art
and architecture of medieval Europe. Her current research uses 3D modeli
ng to examine the layers of paint on the sculptures of the Last Judgment
portal of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Read more at the Nasher e
 vent website.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Stargazing Devils to watch an exceptional lunar eclip
se at midnight (12 AM) on the night of Aug. 27th. The Full Moon will slip
through Earth's shadow\, resulting in a partial lunar eclipse. It will b
e visible from much of North and South America and parts of Europe and Af
rica. At maximum eclipse\, about 93% of the Moon's diameter will be insid
e Earth's dark central shadow\, called the umbra. The Moon will not be co
mpletely covered\, but it can look dramatically darkened\, with a rusty\,
coppery tint along the covered edge.\n\nUnlike a solar eclipse\, a lunar
eclipse is safe to watch with just your eyes. Binoculars or a small tele
scope can give you a closer view of Earth's curved shadow moving across t
he Moon. Source - NASA\n\nCheck the Duke Teaching Observatory Website for

h lines up between the Moon and the Sun. When this happens\, the only lig

DESCRIPTION:Visualization is a powerful way to reveal patterns in data\, a
ttract attention\, and get your message across to an audience quickly and
clearly. But\, there are many steps in that journey from exploration to
information to influence\, and many choices to make when putting it all t
ogether to tell your story. I will cover some basic guidelines for effect
ive visualization\, point out a few common pitfalls to avoid\, and run th
rough a critique and iterations of an existing visualization to help you
start seeing better choices beyond the software defaults. This event is o
 pen to non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:You know the feeling: something ends\, everything changes\, an
d suddenly you have to figure out who you are again. Chloe Moriondo made
an album about it. \n\nComing to Duke as part of Arts Welcome Week\, this
  Duke student-exclusive concert brings Moriondo's strange\, shape-shiftin
g world to campus for a night of big feelings\, genre collisions\, and mu
sic made for figuring things out as you go. \n\nWritten after the biggest
breakup of her life\, oyster transforms a period of upheaval-heartbreak\
, living alone for the first time\, figuring out who she was outside a re
lationship-into a shimmering musical world. "No matter what my feelings a
 re\, they're gonna be strong. Whether I'm angry\, whether I'm obsessed\,
whether I'm hopelessly upset\, it's all going to be a lot." \n\nThe perfo
rmance will open with a set from Greensboro-based indie band bedrumor.

 D. in Physiology and Biophysics in 1992 and his M.D. degree in 1994. He l
ater completed the Clinical Neuroscientist Training Program Residency in
the Department of Psychiatry\, and an NIH funded Neuroimaging Scientist T

both preclinical and clinical studies in attempts to expand our understan

o use this information in developing new approaches for treating and prev

have helped highlight novel pathophysiological mechanisms involving the a

these systems. Most recently he has expanded his focus to explore mechan

of the biological substrate and functional disturbances of depression in
2009 and the Joel Elkes Research Award for Outstanding contributions to P

DESCRIPTION:The complex strand of Black radical thought found in Japan pul
sates with dynamism that can move in different directions. This talk sugg
ests how to relate to this object of knowledge\, or Afro-Asian radicalism
. I see this task as an exercise in probing a deep well of commitment suf
fused with political defeats but also yearning to learn\, evolve\, and ad
vance found within the intervening space between Black radicalism and Jap
anese intellectual and creative activities in the twentieth century. \n\n
In Japanese\, an interstice is defined as ma (間). Attunement toward such
a point of entanglement is of utmost importance to Afro-Asian radicalism.
The details will be culled from Black Radical Thought in Japan (Universi
ty of Washington Press\, 2026)\, which delineates Japanese intellectuals'
commitment to Black struggle cultivated through the study and translatio
 n of Black texts\, many connected to the midcentury U.S. Left.\n\nAbout t
he speaker:\nYuichiro Onishi is a scholar of African American intellectua
l history\, who locates himself in the field of Afro-Asian studies. He al
so continues to investigate the genesis of occupied Okinawa. He began his
academic career in the Center for Ethnic Studies at the Borough of Manha
ttan Community College of The City University of New York (CUNY). His mos
t recent book\, Black Radical Thought in Japan: An Afro-Asian Intellectua
l History (University of Washington Press)\, was published in July 2026.\
n\nProfessor Onishi's research specialties include: Black radicalism and
internationalism\; African American intellectual history\; Asian American
studies\; and transnational American studies. He is an associate profess
or of African American and African Studies in the College of Liberal Arts
at the University of Minnesota. Other departmental affiliations include:
  Asian American Studies\; Race\, Indigeneity\, Disability\, Gender & Sexu
ality Studies\; American Studies\; Asian & Middle Eastern Studies\; Herit
age Studies and Public History Graduate Program. He is also the faculty d
irector of UMN's Liberal Arts Engagement Hub.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Savchnya will share findings from the STRONG st
udy (Stress\, Trauma\, Resilience Of New Generations)\, in which her team
followed 141 Ukrainian refugee women - mothers and grandmothers who arri
ved in Kraków after February 2022 - measuring hair cortisol concentration
as a biomarker of HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis activity alo
ngside self-reported perceived stress and psychological resilience. \n\nW
omen who escaped from frontline towns in Ukraine had 18% higher hair cort
isol than those from non-frontline regions\, yet the two groups did not d
iffer in perceived stress\; and the size of the cortisol gap depended on
resilience: it was largest among women with low resilience and disappeare
d at high resilience. Savchnya will use this as a starting point to talk
about what biomarkers can add to refugee health research\, and future dir
ections of her work\, including other biomarkers\, health systems perspec
tive on refugees from Ukraine in Poland\, and a One Health project in pre
paration. \n\nThe talk will allow time for discussion and feedback about
how stress is measured in war-affected families\, and what that might mea
n for the how war-affected families are supported. \n\nMariia Savchnya co
mpleted her medical education in Kyiv\, Ukraine (Bogomolets National Medi
cal University) before moving to Poland for her PhD in Health Sciences at
Jagiellonian University Medical College. Her main research focuses on re
fugee health\, with focus on biomarkers\, such as cortisol and telomere l
ength. She is also a research assistant in a project focusing on health s
ystems barriers and facilitators for Ukrainian refugees in Poland. \n\nR
