DESCRIPTION:Cassilhaus\nMarch 21 - April 23\nReception: April 14\, 2:00pm
\nArtist Talk: April 15\, 6:00pm\n\nOn view by appointment\, and RSVP re
quired for events. See details at https://shorturl.at/bDFG6\n\nMore of Ev
erything is an ongoing exploration of the artist's recently discovered bi
ological grandfather\, Harvey Karman. Harvey was a fierce advocate for wo
men's rights as well as an integral part of the underground abortion move
ment in 1960's Los Angeles. At the same time\, Harvey was introduced to d
octors at the forefront of the emerging fertility field where he gave wom
en\, such as the artist's grandmother\, the option of motherhood they wou
ld not have otherwise had. Through the process of unearthing Harveys pers
onal archive\, Natasha has come to know a version of her grandfather that
reveals a shared likeness just below the surface\, as images and words c
reated nearly 70 years apart are now brought together. In More of Everyth
ing\, three generations that never existed as one are presented here in t
hree parallel narratives that intersect to create an imaginative union.\n
~\n\nNatasha is a photographer and filmmaker from Pound Ridge\, NY. She r
eceived a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from Belmont University i
n Nashville\, TN (2020) and she currently resides in Durham\, NC where sh
e is an MFA candidate in the Experimental and Documentary Arts program at
Duke University. Natasha is the 2024 Graduate Arts Fellow at the Kenan I
nstitute of Ethics\, a two time Duke University Dean's Research Award rec
ipient and the Spring 2023 Student Film Photo Award recipient for her ong
oing project\, More of Everything.

00pm\n \n\nRubenstein Arts Center Film Theater Screening\nMarch 24\, 2:00
pm\n\nSEEN is a two part MFA thesis which includes a short experimental e
ssay film and an exhibition. The film and exhibition are related in theme
but presented as two separate works. Both concern how still and moving i
mages can visualize displaced memories.\nThe film\, follows Han\, a photo
grapher\, discussing the reemerging "ghost" from his past with his lover
Ann. The "ghost"\, which can only be seen by Han\, is an indescribable ex
istence that always escape the camera lens. The discussion around it shif
ts between real-time conversations and monologues in both English and Chi
nese. Meanwhile\, the visuals change between still and moving images\, pa
st and present footages. With images unable to capture authenticity and l
anguage struggling to convey cultural identity\, the film\, as a result\,
becomes the incommunicability itself of the displaced memories.\nThe exh
ibition\, includes a series of photography works and a one-channel video.
It showcases fragments of urban recollections that one fails to place. T
hese fragments are discrete\, out-of-context and removed from geological\
, chronological\, and cultural frameworks. The still and motion images fu
nction in different manners of shaping our impressions to the urban lands
cape but both fail to connect us to the real memories. Eventually they li
nger as pieces in between the reality and fantasy\, past and present\, pl
aces and non-places.\n~\nTianming Zhou (Alaric) is a Chinese filmmaker an
d photographer currently based in the USA. His work focuses on mental hea
lth\, displaced memories\, and the Chinese diaspora. Alaric grew up in Ma
inland China and completed his bachelor's degree in Hong Kong\, where he
developed a passion for street photography and film studies. Before pursu
ing his MFA at Duke University\, he worked as a documentary editor and in
dependent filmmaker for fictional films. His MFA experiences convinced hi
m to further experiment with the boundary between fiction and non-fiction
\, frequently expressed through meta-films and docu-fictions. During this
period\, he also expanded his artistic practice into video art and expan
ded cinema installations.

nArtist Talk: April 13\, 2:00pm\n\nelemental addresses the transitioning
of the body in form and matter. After experiencing lifelong genetic illn
esses and a Category 5 hurricane that destroyed my family's home and busi
ness\, I searched to find peace\, acceptance\, beauty and connectedness i
n life\, death\, the forces of nature and the Cosmos. My work emerged fro
m trauma\, the recognition of reorientation and survival. I asked myself:
How do you cultivate a sense of belonging and re-association with nature
in the face of natural disaster and death? How do you go back to what is
primordial\, the elements and forces that create and destroy everything
in the Cosmos? How do you move past your physical body and accept yoursel
f as a being in transition? I believe all is not destroyed by nature but
continually enveloped and recreated by it.\n\nThe exhibition consists of
large-scale archival pigment prints and an experimental film. The work de
picts the Five Platonic Solids in their elemental form: Water\, Earth\, A
ir\, Fire and Ether. Still images and video were purposefully composed an
d manually shot in camera utilizing only water\, plants\, sand and light.
No filters were applied to the still images in post-production.\n\nOur c
onnective tissue is the glue that holds our bodies together much like the
Cosmic Web is the scaffolding of the Cosmos. Seeing the relationship bet
ween our bodies and the Cosmos has been a healing force in my life.

DESCRIPTION:Rubenstein Arts Center Painting Studio\nOn View: March 22 - Ap
ril 14\n\nI don't know why I make art\, or whether what I do even qualifi
es as art. Trying to figure out or articulate an intention gets in the wa
y of living life. I'm suspicious of the notion that I can be consciously
aware of what drives my actions. It seems to me that human behavior is pr
edominantly driven by unconscious impulses arising from genetics\, sense
impressions\, and memory. The purpose of my activities is beyond my under
standing as a mortal\, and any narratives I invent to make sense of my en
deavors are speculative interpretations based on what seems significant t
o me under various circumstances. Such a protean attitude is beyond the r
ange of observability and control unless omniscience and omnipotence are
attained. I could concoct a number of contradictory stories about the rol
e I envision my art playing in society\, some of which strongly resonate
with me at times\, but I cannot offer one that's definitive. Every passin
g fraction of a second has the potential for an event to induce electroch
emical changes in my brain and nervous system that open new ways I could
relate to my work\, my identity\, and the world. Life seems like an absur
d string of events that are only connected as much as I retrospectively i
magine them to be. Asking me about my art is like asking a grape about it
s wine.

DESCRIPTION:Ruby Gallery\nRubenstein Arts Center 235\nOn View: March 22 -
April 14\nArtist Talk: April 10\, 6:00pm\n\nBetween Memories and Dreams
is an ongoing exploration that intricately delves into the space where i
dentity is lost and reclaimed. The exhibition unfolds through storytellin
g forms\, including childhood folk songs\, muted conversations\, and drea
m-like sequences. Alghesheyan explores childhood memories through a gener
ational lens\, contemplating memory\, dreams\, and identity\, and their e
volving intersections. The intersections uncover a shared belief in the t
ransformative potential of montage\, an art that not only narrates storie
s but shapes and reshapes the fabric of culture\, identity\, and space.\n
~\nWhile pursuing her BA in Media and Film at USF in San Francisco\, Sara
's exposure to experimental film and film archives ignited a transformati

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For a robot to prepare a meal or clean a room\, it m
ust make a large array of decisions\, such as what objects to clean first
\, where to grasp each ingredient and tool\, how to open a heavy\, overst
uffed cabinet\, and so on. To enable robots to tackle these tasks\, I dec
ompose the problem into two interdependent layers: generating a series of
subgoals (i.e.\, a strategy) and solving for the robot behavior that ach
ieves each of these subgoals. Critically\, to accomplish a rich set of ma
nipulation tasks\, these subgoal solvers must account for force\, motion\
, deformation\, contact\, uncertainty and partial observability.\n\nMy re
search contributes models and algorithms for generating this kind of robo
t behavior such that it both generalizes to new environments and can be c
omposed into long-horizon strategies. In this talk\, I will first discuss
how this approach has enabled robots to perform tasks that require reaso
ning over and exerting force\, like opening a childproof medicine bottle
with a single arm. Next\, I will illustrate different ways robots can mak
e robust choices in the face of uncertainty. For example\, this empowers
robots to reliably chop up fruit of unknown ripeness! Finally\, I propose
how robots operating with uncertain dynamics can generate cautious behav
ior\, such as shoving an object near the edge of the table without it fal
ling.

\nAbstract: Human pancreatic cancer persists as a significant global heal
th challenge with high mortality rates\, and the precise etiology of panc
reatic cancer remains elusive. While current treatments include surgery a
nd conventional chemotherapeutic agents\, the antiausterity strategy has
emerged as a promising approach to target the tolerance of pancreatic can
cer cells to nutrient-deprived microenvironments. In 2020\, three natural
products\, namely ferutinin (1)\, a new daucane-type sesquiterpenoid (2)
and kuhistanicaol G (3)\, were proved possessing potent antiausterity ac
tivity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells. However\, their stru
cture-activity relationships (SAR) and mechanism of action have yet to be
elucidated. Therefore\, we sought to establish an efficient and divergen
t route to complete the total synthesis of these natural products and to
prepare analogs to probe SAR.\nThis dissertation first describes the cons
truction of two structural features of all three target compounds: a quat
ernary carbon center and a 5\,7-fused bicyclic system with trans ring jun
ction. The synthesis of 1 was subsequently accomplished following a few f
unctionalizations. Additionally\, this work includes preparation of the k
ey allylic alcohol precursor to 2 and 3. Evaluations of the antiausterity
activity of compounds 1 and 3\, as well as four derivatives\, are curren
tly in progress. These synthetic efforts and establishment of SAR will ai
d in the development of chemotherapeutic agents with new mechanisms of ac
tion against human pancreatic cancer\, offering hope for improved treatme
nt outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:The group velocity $v_F$ of the electrons in a flat band super
conductor is extremely slow\, resulting in quenched kinetic energy. Super
conductivity thus appears impossible\, as conventional BCS theory implies
a vanishing superfluid stiffness\, coherence length\, and critical curre
nt. Using twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG)\, we explore the profound effec
t very small $v_F$ in a superconducting Dirac flat band system. Non-linea
r transport studies\, we measure $v_F$ via the Schwinger effect\, yieldin
g an extremely slow $v_F\\sim$ 1000 m/s for filling fraction between -1/2
and -3/4 of the moiré superlattice. This same velocity yields a new limi
ting mechanism for the superconducting critical current\, with analogies
to a relativistic superfluid. We estimate the superfluid stiffness\, whic
h determines the electrodynamic response of the superconductor\, showing
that it is not dominated by the kinetic energy\, but by the interaction-d
riven superconducting gap\, consistent with recent theories on quantum ge
ometric contributions. We study the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BE
C) crossover via coherence length measurements\, finding an unprecedented
ratio of the superconducting transition temperature to the Fermi tempera
ture exceeding unity\, illustrating how this can arise for very strong co
upling superconductivity in ultra-flat Dirac bands. Moreover\, a canonica
l example of geometric frustration is a triangular lattice with antiferro
magnetic nearest neighbor spin coupling\, which can lead to phases such a
s spin ices and spin liquids. Much less studied is geometric frustration
based on orbital coupling. In our recent work\, we have shown that incomp
ressible states form at 1/3 fractional filling factors in twisted bilayer
graphene at angles larger than the magic one that are strongly dominant
over integer fillings. These results are in agreement with a strong-coupl
ing theory based on Coulomb interactions between electrons occupying thre
e-lobed Wannier orbitals\, leading to symmetry-broken phases with distinc
t charge\, spin\, and valley order.

DESCRIPTION:There is compelling evidence that convictions and incarceratio
n have negative impacts on labor market outcomes. But research also shows
that offenders have relatively low levels of human capital even before a
ny contact with the justice system. Thus\, accurately characterizing an o
ffender's employment profile and the plausible impact of the justice syst
em has been challenging due to this population's non-trivial involvement
in both formal and informal sectors and the non-linear relationship betwe
en criminal justice involvement and economic outcomes (e.g. the first cri
minal record playing a critical role in life-long employment outcomes). W
e use high-quality longitudinal criminal justice records through CJARS in
tegrated with extensive labor market data (IRS W-2s and ACS self-reported
work) to examine the effect of criminal justice interactions on labor ma
rket outcomes in an event study framework. Employment and earnings are tr
acked in both formal administrative as well as self-reported employment s
tatus in survey responses\, providing an opportunity to identify informal
ity and its implications. In this research\, we highlight the importance
of periodicity of criminal justice events and the role of shifts to infor
mal employment\, particularly when using event studies and administrative
data.

DESCRIPTION:Since February 24\, 2022\, Ukrainians have endured a multitude
of horrors\, including war crimes\, violence\, and mental trauma\, with
civilians facing constant shelling and displacement as refugees. Psycholo
gists treating the complex post-traumatic effects face a unique challenge
due to the unprecedented nature of the war trauma. However\, despite the
significant symptoms of acute stress\, Ukrainians exhibit remarkable res
ilience in coping with the trauma. Dr. Prokhovnik-Raphique will explore t
hese coping mechanisms and discuss ways in which volunteers and supporter
s can aid in the recovery process.\n\nDr. Alla Prokhovnik-Raphique is a c
linical psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma and addictiv
e disorders in her private practice\, Nurturing Roots Psychology. She hol
ds a voluntary faculty appointment at Icahn Medical School at Mount Sinai
where she supervises psychology interns on their rotations at the Addict

o her clinical work\, Dr. Prokhovnik-Raphique serves as the COO for Ukrai
ne NGO Coordination Network (UNCN)\, a network of non-profit organization
s providing all forms of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.\n\nThis event is as

DESCRIPTION:The graduate students of the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Wor
king Group invite you to attend a book talk with Professor Elena Shih as
she discusses her 2023 publication: "Manufacturing Freedom: Sex Work\, An
ti-Trafficking Rehab\, and the Racial Wages of Rescue." A reception follo
ws the talk.\n\nRSVP directly to EADS to attend the reception: https://ti
nyurl.com/rcsbooktalk\n\nAbout the book:\n\nSex worker rescue programs ha
ve become a core focus of the global movement to combat human trafficking
. While these rehabilitation programs promise freedom from enslavement an
d redemptive wages for former sex workers\, such organizations actually p
ropagate a moral economy of low‑wage women's work that obfuscates relatio
ns of race\, gender\, national power\, and inequality. Manufacturing Free
dom is an ethnographic exploration of two American organizations that off
er vocational training in jewelry production to women migrants in China a
nd Thailand as a path out of sex work. In this innovative study\, Elena S
hih argues that anti‑trafficking rescue and rehabilitation projects profi
t off persistent labor abuse of women workers and imagined but savvily ma
rketed narratives of redemption.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nElena Shih is M
anning Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnic Studies at Brow
n University\, where she directs a human trafficking research cluster thr
ough the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice.\n\nEvent organized
by the East Asian & Diaspora Studies Group and APSI with support from the
program in Asian American & Diaspora Studies\, the program in Gender\, S
exuality\, and Feminist Studies\, and the Franklin Humanities Institute (
FHI) at Duke University.

DESCRIPTION:Tens of millions of people in the United States have been dire
ctly impacted by the criminal justice system\, with nearly half the popul
ation affected through close familial or social ties. Alongside the direc
t harm inflicted by the system\, an insidious challenge arises: the syste
m's opaque nature makes pinpointing the specific loci of harm complex and
elusive. Echoing the words of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells\, who st
ated that "the way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon the
m\," this talk will showcase how data science can be harnessed to expose
racial injustice. It will feature case studies spanning various scales an
d stages of the criminal justice system\, including policing in the small
municipality of Williamstown\, Massachusetts\; criminal sentencing acros
s all 94 federal district courts\; and incarceration at Rikers Island in
New York during the COVID pandemic. These examples underscore the pivotal
role of data science tools in fostering transparency and advancing justi
ce.\n\nReception following the event in Physics 101.

DESCRIPTION:Difference Image Analysis (DIA) is a primary enabling techniqu
e in time-domain astronomy. The weather condition\, photometric scaling\,
and sky background generally vary with time and across the field of view
for astronomical imaging data acquired through optical or nearinfrared t
elescopes. These variations necessitate the homogenization of observed im
ages using DIA to accurately measure the brightness of stellar explosions
uncovered by the timedomain\nsurveys. In my talk\, I will review the fun
damental concepts of DIA and the prevalent methods employed in time-domai
n community\, with a particular emphasis on our novel SFFT algorithm. The
SFFT method can enable accurate image differencing in Fourier space with
remarkable computational advancement. I will show some existing applicat
ions of SFFT method in time-domain surveys\, such as the DECam program DE
SIRT in concert with the DESI operation for intermediate-redshift transie
nts. Furthermore\, I will highlight a transient\nsearch framework we deve
loped for JWST NIRCam/NIRISS observations and discuss our upcoming JWST C
ycle 3 archival program for cosmic transients.

DESCRIPTION:March 28th at 5:30pm\n"Dangerous Constellations"\nFriedl 225\,
East Campus\, Duke University\n \nRonald Mendoza-de Jesús's new book\, C
atastrophic Historicism: Reading Julia de de Burgos Dangerously (Fordham
UP\, 2023)\, unsettles the historicist constitution of Julia de Burgos (1
914-53)\, Puerto Rico's most iconic writer-a critical task that necessita
tes redefining the concept of historicism. While critiques of historicism
as a realism leave untouched the sovereignty of the historian\, Catastro
phic Historicism insists that reading the text of history requires an att
unement to danger-a modality that interrupts historicism by infusing the
past with a contingency that evades appropriation.\n \nMarch 29th at noon
(lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: \nSovereign Cosmopoiesis and Unwo
rldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\, Duke University \n \nBuild
ing on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the critical humanities has unde
rtaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argues that this turn is enabled
by an idealization of the concept of worlding that disavows the desire f
or sovereignty that structures the process of world-constitution\, howeve
r piously or altruistically the latter may be construed. To make this cas
e\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading of Glissant's "La barque o
uverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worlding otherwise generates th
e semblance of a "New World" of relationality and non-totalitarian unity-
in-diversity by obfuscating the structural role that the production and a
ppropriation of racialized/sexed abjection plays within cosmopoiesis.\n \
nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested pre-read: Éduoard Glissant'
s "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from Poetique de la Relation/Poe
tics of Relation. The French and English can be found here: https://duke

gram in Literature\, The Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South\
