DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of "Til Islands." Meet the ar
tist\, Emma Geiger\, and enjoy light refreshments.\n\nAbout the Exhibitio
n\n\n"Til Íslands" presents images of dislocation and reconnection with t
he Icelandic landscape after over a century of separation. In the summer
of 2025\, Emma Geiger returned to the land left behind by her great-great
-grandmother in 1888\, documenting the delicate experience of becoming re
acquainted with a landscape and people in the midst of dramatic environme
ntal change. Til Íslands features work created at her family's farm on La
ke Apavatn\, and at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd\; still and m
 oving images\, phytograms of plants\, seaweed\, and wool\, and a quilt na
turally dyed with lupine\, rhubarb\, and lichen each reflect impressions
of the Icelandic landscape and identity. \n\nAbout the Artist\n\nEmma Gei
ger is an artist\, photographer\, and musician from Hopkinton\, New Hamps
hire\, working with natural materials and analog processes. She holds an
MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Duke University\, and a grad
uate certificate in Visual Storytelling from the Salt Institute for Docum
entary Studies. In 2025 she was awarded the Cassilhaus Biannual Travel Fe
llowship for her documentary project exploring her ancestral connection t
o Iceland. \n\nGeiger writes and performs music and has released two EPs
 - Haven (2022) and Reverse Bloom (2024). Across her visual work and music
\, nostalgia\, solitude\, and a lifelong relationship with the natural wo
rld remain central.\n\nLocation:\n\nDuke Center for Documentary Studies\n

DESCRIPTION:A Behind-the-Scenes Conversation with Justin Robinson and D.L.
Anderson\n\nWhen our most sacred recipes tell inconvenient truths\, do w
e have the courage to listen? \n\nA family treat called "stickies" turns
out to be stückene\, the German word for scraps. A lifetime of digestive
trouble fades after a week of eating West African food. A DNA test reveal
 s a German ancestor in a Black Southern family tree. \n\nGrammy-winning m
usician and ethnobotanist Justin Robinson (Carolina Chocolate Drops) has
spent years pulling at these threads\, following them from his grandparen
ts' kitchen in South Carolina to Nigeria\, to Germany\, and into deeper q
uestions about identity\, ancestry\, and the body that demand a form inte
nse and intimate enough to match them.\n\n"German Soul\," executive produ
ced by Rhiannon Giddens\, is that form: a "live documentary" that puts Ro
binson on stage with film\, original music\, and "taste cues" prepared by
Chef Adé Carrena to share this investigation directly and make room for
response. The project is being workshopped with the communities closest t
o its findings\, built to stay in active relationship with the culture it
  examines.\n\nAt CDS\, Robinson and Co-Director\, Producer D.L. Anderson\
, of Vittles Films\, peek under the lid on how they arrived at this forma
t and what it takes to build it. The conversation covers the design of a
documentary meant to turn over big\, personal questions in a live room\,
the ethics of workshopping hard history with implicated audiences\, and w
hether this format can chart a sustainable path for independent nonfictio
n.\n\nFree and open to the public. Presented by Duke CDS Continuing Educa
tion. \n\nLearn more about the project: germalsoul.live
