DESCRIPTION:Nuestra Tierra. 2025. Dir. Lucrecia Martel (Argentina). 122 mi
 n. DCP\n\nIn 2009\, a man and two accomplices try to evict members of the
Indigenous community of Chuschagasta in northern Argentina. Claiming own
ership of the land and armed with guns\, they kill the community's leader
\, Javier Chocobar. The murder is caught on video. It takes nine years of
protests before court proceedings are finally opened in 2018. During all
this time\, the killers remain free. The film combines the voices and ph
otographs of the community with courtroom footage to explore the long his

Chocobar was shot and killed\, and two other community members were wound
ed. The murder is caught on video. It takes nine years of protests before
court proceedings are finally opened in 2018. During all this time\, the
killers remain free. \n\nIn her expansive and enlightening first feature
documentary\, acclaimed Argentinean filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (ZAMA\, TH
E HEADLESS WOMAN) takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story\, t
riangulating the murder trial of the three men\, the lives of Chocobar an
d his fellow Chuchagasta people\, and the centuries-old\, colonialist leg
acy of land and property theft across Latin America. With a ravishing\, a
t times vertiginous visual approach to filming the natural beauty of the
contested land\, Martel pays cinematic tribute to people whom others syst
ematically tried to erase from history. \n\n"A slow-burning\, increasingl
y incensed unraveling of a horrific murder case underpinned by colonialis
t privilege and prejudice... with steadily rising emotional impact and a
long view of Latin American history that transcends any true-crime trappi
 ngs." -- Guy Lodge\, Variety  \n\n"Martel strips Argentina's mythmaking d
own to its colonial foundations ... It's about preserving the history of
Argentina\, told by those who were conquered\, and supporting the ongoing
struggle for indigenous survival. Martel's filmmaking here is intentiona
lly straightforward and precise\, wielding careful storytelling as a cudg
el against the bludgeoning power of the state\, in order to credibly repr
esent and affirm the existence of a history and culture that has been 'of
ficially' denied." -- A.G. Sims\, Reverse Shot\n\n"A searing and detailed
chronicle of murder\, bigotry and robbery on a massive scale... It's al
so filled with flashes of visual splendor\, as the camera rises to a bird
's eye view to reveal the scope of the land in question\, reminding us th
at what's at stake is not only an entire people's culture\, but nature it
self." -- Jordan Mintzer\, The Hollywood Reporter

DESCRIPTION:Aaron Pang walks with a cane\, and everyone asks "what happene
d?" He's tired of answering and so he wrote a solo show to tell it in one
go. One accident\, two stories: one you've heard a thousand times\, one
you've never heard before.\n\nFalling is an uncomfortably sexy and hilari
ously vulnerable stumble through Aaron's misadventures searching for love
\, lust\, and life after disability. Pang is a writer and comedian from O
akland\, California whose work blends sincerity and sharp humor to challe
nge familiar narratives about disabled bodies and relationships.

DESCRIPTION:Three brothers named "Schumann\," joined by violist Veit Herte
nstein\, turned a family pastime into an internationally acclaimed quarte
 t. "Fire and energy. The Schumann Quartett plays staggeringly well...with
out doubt one of the very best formations among today's abundance of quar
tets\, with virtuosity and a willingness to astonish" (Süddeutsche Zeitun
g).\n\n"We really want to take things to extremes\, to see how far the ex
citement and our spontaneity as a group take us\," says Ken Schumann. The
concert gets underway with a late masterpiece by Haydn\, the "father of
the string quartet\," before taking a left turn into a marvelous rarity\,
the String Quartet No. 2 by Charles Ives. An early 20th-century American
masterwork\, the Ives Quartet conjures a political argument between four
bullheaded personalities while skipping through popular American folk so
ngs. To close the evening\, the Schumann players probe a more intimate si
de of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in his String Quartet No.

DESCRIPTION:The Ciompi Quartet\, Duke University's resident string quartet
\, has built an international reputation for performances that weave toge
ther music of the past and present. Praised by The New York Times for pla
ying that sounded "intelligent and sure\," the ensemble's fall program "F
ollow Me" is rooted in U.S. musical traditions. \n\nThe evening moves fro
 m Samuel Barber's powerful String Quartet\, Op. 11 to Ben Johnston's inve

e and Charles Ives reflects the evolving voice of American composition. T
he quartet is joined by acclaimed baritone Robert Sims for a set of spiri
tuals\, connecting classical repertoire with some of the deepest currents
in American musical life.\n\nThis performance is part of "We the People\
," a Duke and Durham collaboration marking the 250th anniversary of the s
igning of the Declaration of Independence through public events that exam
ine the nation's evolving identity. Drawing from the opening words of the
Constitution\, the project invites us to consider who "the people" have
been and who we aspire to be within the ongoing story of the United State
s.\n\nThis event is free but does require tickets.

DESCRIPTION:Praised for their "unmistakable and apt ferocity" (Chicago Tri
bune)\, the Pacifica Quartet carved out a reputation as a champion of con
temporary American music by placing new works side-by-side with the class
ics. "Stormy. Stunning. Visionary. Heroic. Those were some of the words t
hat lingered in my mind after the Pacifica Quartet's Tuesday evening conc
ert" (The New York Times). \n\nThe two-time GRAMMY-winning Pacifica Quart
et brings an eclectic program to Baldwin Auditorium\, centered around a w
atershed of the string quartet canon\, Beethoven's Op. 130 Quartet. A mon
ument of emotional extremes\, Op. 130 shifts from prayerful introspection
to brash humor to gossamer tenderness. The concert opens with an exquisi
te lament by Pulitzer Prize-winner George Walker. The Pacificas also pres
ent a brand-new work for quartet and narrator by the acclaimed American c
omposer Gabriela Lena Frank\, whose "restless music is powerful\, often h

expressive. \n\nComprised of tenor Vaughn Faison\, bass Gabe Kunda\, ten
or JE McKissic\, and baritone Jamall Williams\, the group first gained wi
despread attention through viral stairwell performances and later earned
a GRAMMY nomination for their arrangement of the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Y
our Love." \n\nFollowing their sold-out Duke Arts appearance in 2024\, Ki

DESCRIPTION:"In short: it's not 'Mozart as usual.'" The renowned Escher Qu
artet joins pianist David Fung\, fresh off an all-Mozart recording\, for
music by Mozart and Schumann. The Escher Quartet brings an airy radiance
to the stage. "As an ensemble\, they glow" (New York Classical Review)\,
shaping luminous melodic lines with the careful attention to bowing\, vib
rato\, and phrasing\, joined by the"silky\, dulcet melodic lines" of Davi
d Fung. (Earrelevant). \n\nBoth the Mozart and Schumann works create an
almost piano concerto-like atmosphere\, spinning a clever repartee that
dances between the different instruments. Indeed\, the Eschers owe their
name to the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher\, whose "method of interplay
between individual components works together to form a whole." Also on t
he program\, the Eschers play a hidden gem by the legendary film composer
 \, Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

DESCRIPTION:Artistry meets invention with the Sphinx Virtuosi. One of the
most talked-about classical ensembles working today\, the self-conducted
Sphinx players serve up "immeasurable power\, unwavering command\, and so
ulful beauty" (The Washington Post) while offering a fresh\, unique appro
ach to programming. \n\nThe America250 concert combines many inspirations
of the American melting pot with "classically-framed infusions" of spiri
tuals\, patriotic songs\, blues\, and Latin dance. Ever curious and alway
s adventuresome\, the Sphinx Virtuosi bring with them a new piece by Rach
el McFarlane\, a young composer of film and video game music. The program
includes music by Latin GRAMMY-winner Roberto Sierra\, juxtaposed with a
Blues movement by the Frenchman Maurice Ravel\, written in 1923 after he
aring American jazz. The Virtuosi wrap things up with the vivacious Conce
rto in D for String Orchestra (1946)\, composed in Hollywood by the 20th-
century giant Igor Stravinsky\, shortly after he became an American citiz
 en.

DESCRIPTION:"A quartet to watch\," the Quatuor Van Kuijk is a relative new
comer to the American music scene but is turning heads in a crowded field
. "Style\, energy and a sense of risk. These four young Frenchmen made th
e music smile" (The Guardian).\n\nMaking their version of a musical tasti
ng menu\, the Van Kuijks combine an international bouquet of flavors\, st
arting with one of Mozart's most unusual pieces: the first movement of hi
s Dissonance Quartet\, named for its radical departure from harmonic conv
ention. So daring in its conception and piquant in its effect\, the Mozar
t sounds strikingly modern\, even in a program featuring 20th-century wor
ks by Bartók and Shostakovich. To add body and contrast to this processio
n\, the Van Kuijks include probing Romanticism by Beethoven and Brahms\,
as well as zesty pizzicato by Debussy. Doleful\, folk-inspired melodies b
y Smetana and Dvořák round out this musical feast with the soulful sounds
  of rural Bohemia.
