DESCRIPTION:Over the last four years\, the Shia Islamic-Jewish Legal Reaso
ning in Dialogue has brought together 13 scholars from across the U.S. an
d internationally to study legal texts of both traditions via diverse met
hodologies of academic analysis. They have been divided into 6 working g
roups working on the topics of the legal self\, constitutionalism\, theoc
racy\, language\, female clerical authority\, and the persecution of here
tics. The Dialogue is not merely meant to identify similarities and diffe
rences\, but to allow scholars to think their "own" tradition conceptuall
y anew through this encounter. The project arrives at Duke in order to pr
esent its findings and receive constructive critique from Triangle-area s
cholars of co-written book chapters that will eventually be published in
Rutgers University Press' "Transmodern Times" series.\n\nMore information

DESCRIPTION:The Islamic Secular argues that the common notion of a fundame
ntal conflict between the secular and the religious cannot be applied to
Islam. This is not because Islam rejects the secular in favor of the reli
gious\; it is because Islam's concept of the religious includes the secul
ar. This is what is captured by the term "Islamic Secular." Contrary to b
oth the notion that "religion" in Islam equals "sharī'ah\," and to the co
ncomitant notion that sharī'ah is the all-encompassing\, exclusive metric
of assessment in Islam\, this book argues that\, while Islam is all-enco
mpassing\, sharī'ah is bounded. This leaves a space between the limited c
ircumference of sharī'ah and the unlimited circumference of Islam. While
both spaces are "religious" in that they come under the adjudicative gaze
of the God of Islam\, only the shar'ī space draws directly upon sharī'ah
and its sources\, while the non-shar'ī space does not. In the end\, this
allows for a "religious secular\," a space wherein matters remain "relig
ious" but their concrete substance is neither based on nor assessed in te
rms of sharī'ah or its sources. These shar'ī and non-shar'ī elements are
not rivals but complements. As such\, both "secularism" and "secularizati
on\," as non- or anti-religious tropes\, are alien to the Islamic Secular
.\n\nProfessor Sherman A. Jackson is a Distinguished Professor of Religio
n and American Studies and Ethnicity and holds the King Faisal Chair in I
slamic Thought and Culture at the University of Southern California. An i
nternationally renowned scholar of Islamic law\, theology\, and intellect
ual history\, he has been recognized as one of the 500 Most Influential M
uslims. His scholarship brings the classical Islamic intellectual traditi
on into conversation with modern questions of race\, politics\, pluralism
\, and Muslim life in the West. He is the author of numerous influential
works\, including Islam and the Blackamerican (2005)\, Islam and the Prob
lem of Black Suffering (2009)\, and The Islamic Secular (2023).
