DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSpatially resolving stimuli can allow us to better 
 understand physicochemical processes in complex environments [1\,2]. Towa
 rds this goal\, we develop ways of integrating Förster resonance energy t
 ransfer (FRET) chemistry into stimuli-responsive polymer architectures\, 
 such that FRET output (i.e.\, spectral shift in fluorescence) reflects po
 lymer chain conformation [3]. Using FRET\, we can spatially resolve confo
 rmation by confocal microscopy methods\, with high spatiotemporal resolut
 ion. In this talk\, I will discuss strategies to integrate FRET into func
 tional polymers\, and how we can examine the responsiveness of the polyme
 rs for understanding physicochemical processes. Specifically\, these syst
 ems are used to study surface wettability [3]\, localised changes in pH [
 1]\, resolving contact areas between surfaces\, and micro-to-nano structu
 re in secondary matrices [5]. We further show what are the most efficient
  methods for integrating FRET into such polymer matrices [6]\, for resolv
 ing such conformational changes. Our systems provide a non-invasive optic
 al measure of changing surface conditions\, which holds great promise for

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nArchitected materials typically derive their mecha
 nical properties from continuous\, rigidly connected networks of struts\,
  plates\, or shells. In this talk\, I will introduce an alternative desig
 n paradigm based on discrete\, topologically interlocked building blocks:
  polycatenated architected materials (PAMs). Inspired by chain mail\, PAM
 s consist of rings\, polygons\, or polyhedral cages concatenated into thr
 ee-dimensional networks derived from crystalline lattice topologies\, wit
 h kinematic degrees of freedom set by particle geometry and catenation pa
 ttern. I will first describe our earlier work on two-dimensional interloc
 ked fabrics\, showing how jamming can be triggered by external confinemen
 t to reversibly and dramatically stiffen chain mail sheets\, and how a mo
 dified Maxwell criterion predicts the in-plane and out-of-plane rigidity 
 of torus-knot tessellated fabrics from their connectivity alone. Building
  on these principles\, I will present a general design framework that tra
 nslates arbitrary crystalline networks into three-dimensional polycatenat
 ed particle assemblies. Under small loads\, PAMs behave like non-Newtonia
 n fluids\, exhibiting both shear-thinning and shear-thickening responses\
 ; at larger strains\, they jam into solid-like lattices with nonlinear\, 
 hysteretic stress-strain behavior reminiscent of granular media. I will s
 how that this fluid-solid duality\, along with the critical jamming strai
 n\, can be programmed through particle geometry and catenation topology\,
  and that it persists across length scales\, from centimeter-scale printe
 d samples to micron-scale structures whose shape can be reversibly reconf
 igured using electrostatic forces. Together\, these results establish PAM
 s as a new class of architected materials that bridge discrete granular p
 hysics and continuum architected-materials design\, opening routes toward
  stimuli-responsive\, energy-absorbing\, and shape-morphing systems.\n\nH

 iven Materials Science will be held at Duke University on October 12-13\,
  2026. The workshop will bring together leading researchers\, industry ex
 perts\, and emerging scholars to explore the latest advances in electron 
 microscopy\, AI-enabled data analysis\, and data-driven materials discove
 ry.\n\nThe program will showcase cutting-edge characterization techniques
  and computational approaches for next-generation energy and quantum mate
 rials\, including batteries\, two-dimensional materials\, and complex int
 erfaces. By connecting fundamental research with industrial applications\
 , the workshop will foster collaborations among academia\, national labor
 atories\, and industry while engaging regional industry partners.\n\nStud
 ents and postdoctoral researchers are especially encouraged to participat
 e. The workshop will feature networking opportunities\, career developmen
 t activities\, and a poster session with awards recognizing outstanding s
 tudent and postdoctoral presentations.\n\nBy fostering interdisciplinary
