Initiated in 2010 by renowned filmmaker Wu W enguang at the Chaochangdi Workstation in Beijing\, the project has amass ed over 1\,000 interviews across nearly 250 villages. These testimonies o ffer an invaluable grassroots perspective on one of the most devastating periods in modern Chinese history.\n\nIn 2012\, with the support of Duke University faculty\, the Chaochangdi Workstation entrusted the collection to Duke University Libraries (DUL). Between 2015 and 2018\, thanks to a Mellon Foundation-Council on East Asian Libraries Innovation Grant\, DUL completed the arrangement\, description\, and metadata creation for the e ntire collection. All original digital materials are now securely housed in the Duke Digital Repository.\n\nSince 2019\, DUL has published the col lection in phases. The initial launch of 300 interviews was made possible through close collaboration with the filmmakers during their 2019 reside ncy. Today\, the open-access digital archive includes 739 video interview s. The collection is actively used in teaching and research across discip lines and draws global scholarly attention. In this RCR session\, we'll examine the growing landscape of AI-generated scholarly content (including so-called "AI slop") and explore how it affects literature reviews and scholarly p ublication. We'll examine the limitations and biases that generative AI c an introduce or amplify (e.g. hallucinations\, sycophancy\, and opaque pr ovenance) and discuss practical strategies for avoiding them. We'll also discuss emerging publisher expectations regarding transparency and disclo sure of AI use by authors. As AI changes what expertise looks like\, atte ndees will learn strategies for critically assessing AI-generated outputs \, recognizing potential biases\, and making informed decisions about whe n and how AI can be used responsibly in the research process.\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n- Develop an awareness of how AI-generated content is im pacting scholarly literature\n- Practice strategies for critically assess ing AI-generated content for hallucination and bias\n- Learn best practic es and approaches to disclosing AI use in research and writing\n\nZoom in formation will be sent via email to registered attendees the day before. "It is all one story\," prizewinning historian Woody Holton writes. He describes the origins and crucial batt les of the Revolution from Lexington and Concord to the British surrender at Yorktown\, always focusing on marginalized Americans-enslaved African s and African Americans\, Native Americans\, women\, and dissenters-and o n overlooked factors such as weather\, North America's unique geography\, chance\, misperception\, attempts to manipulate public opinion\, and (mo st of all) disease. Thousands of enslaved Americans exploited the chaos o f war to obtain their own freedom\, while others were given away as enlis tment bounties to whites. Women provided material support for the troops\ , sewing clothes for soldiers and in some cases taking part in the fighti ng. Both sides courted native people and mimicked their tactics. In a maj estic story Walter Isaacson called a "must-read book for understanding th e founding of our nation\," Holton makes a convincing case that Britain n ever had a chance of winning the war and revivifies a story we thought we already knew.\n\nWOODY HOLTON is Professor of History at the University of South Carolina. His 2009 book\, Abigail Adams\, which he wrote on a Gu ggenheim Fellowship\, won the Bancroft Prize. Holton is also the author o f Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution (2007)\, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. His first book\, Forced Founders : Indians\, Debtors\, Slaves\, and the Making of the American Revolution in Virginia (1999)\, won the Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award (presented by the New York Sons of the Revolution) and the Merle Curti Award (prese nted by the Organization of American Historians).
