Over the course of six captivating and moving chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial.\n \nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen's craft and weav es in the haunting story of his late mother's mental illness. Nguyen unfo lds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, unti l aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and poli tics. What is a writer's responsibility in a time of violence? Should we celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless-or do we confront the forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the b urdens and pleasures of the "minor" writer in any society? Unsatisfied wi th the modest inclusion accorded to "model minorities" such as Asian Amer icans\, Nguyen sets the agenda for a more radical and disquieting solidar ity with those whose lives have been devastated by imperialism and foreve r wars.\n\nAbout the moderator\nEileen Cheng-yin Chow is Associate Profes sor of the Practice in Chinese and Japanese Cultural Studies at Duke Univ ersity\, and one of the founding directors of Story Lab at Duke. Rather than treating Tibet as a s ingle religious landscape\, the lecture approaches it through sound and r itual\, bringing into view historical layers that are not fully captured in written sources.\n\nAt the center is a rare music manuscript over one hundred years old\, written in French\, Latin\, and Tibetan and notated i n four-line staff notation. Discovered during fieldwork\, it provides dir ect evidence of how Catholic chant entered a Tibetan context and was inco rporated into local ritual life.\n\nBy bringing together field observatio n and historical materials\, the lecture considers how such evidence resh apes existing narratives and reveals a more complex picture of religion a nd culture in Tibetan regions of China.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nChenhui Su n (孙晨荟) is a musicologist and performer\, a professor at the Institute of Music in the Chinese National Academy of Arts\, and a 2026 visiting scho lar at the Duke Divinity School.\n\nHer research focuses on Chinese Chris tian music\, Chinese traditional music\, and Sino-Western musical exchang e\, bringing together fieldwork\, archival research\, and musical practic e. This event is being held in recognition of Natio nal Disability Employment Awareness Month\, and Dr. Rogers will be in con versation with Dr. Catherine Clune-Taylor\, Assistant Professor of Gender \, Sexuality\, and Feminist Studies.\n\nFrom the book jacket:\n\nIn "Sick Work\," Emily Lim Rogers shows the unpaid labor it takes to be recognize d as sick in the United States. Through a historical and ethnographic acc ount of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)-a dis ease defined by disproportionate exhaustion after any form of exertion\, which has no cure or treatment-she reveals how changing formations of lab or decide what counts as disability and what does not. Sickness\, she wri tes\, is not work's opposite. Rather\, the frequent dismissal of their di sease leaves people with ME/CFS to do their own labor of disease advocacy \, or "sick work\," even as their symptoms prevent many from working paid jobs. Rogers presents a history of the discursive construction of chroni c fatigue and demonstrates its development alongside capitalism since the dawn of industrial management science in the late nineteenth century. Th ese histories\, she argues\, echo through to the present day\, shaping th e denial of ME/CFS and the stigma that surrounds it. Examining the everyd ay lives of people with ME/CFS and their activist movements\, "Sick Work" describes how they swim upstream against strong tides of disbelief and d emands a radical transformation of how work is defined and valued.\n\nThi s hybrid event will take place in-person and on Zoom.
