DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nElectrocatalysis has the potential to enable sustai
nable chemical infrastructures via the generation of commodity chemicals
such as hydrogen\, hydrocarbons\, and ammonia with renewable energy\, but
electrochemical devices such as electrolyzers often exhibit inadequate a
ctivity and stability for these transformations due to poor catalyst perf
ormance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Moreno-Hernandez Lab
oratory specializes in the design of electrocatalysts for next-generation
energy devices via a multiscale feedback loop that integrates the precis
e synthesis of nanomaterials\, atomic-scale observations of structural dy
namics in liquid environments with in situ transmission electron microsco
py\, and the assessment of electrocatalyst performance under relevant ope
rating conditions via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. Insigh
ts from these activities\, in particular with liquid phase transmission e
lectron microscopy (LP-TEM)\, has resulted in the direct observation of e
lectrocatalyst degradation mechanisms and degradation kinetics at the nan
oscale\, and the observation of collective atomic-scale mechanisms of dis
solution. Disorder-induced degradation has been found to result in substa
ntial nanoscale heterogeneity in dissolution properties for rutile-type e
lectrocatalysts such as RuO2 and IrO2. Insights from these activities has
resulted in the discovery of oxidized overlayer electrocatalysts with im
proved noble metal utilization\, the discovery of experimental energy sca
ling relations that can guide catalyst design for non-iridium electrocata
lysts\, the direct observation of electrocatalyst degradation mechanisms
at the nanoscale\, and the observation of atomic-scale mechanisms of diss
olution. Our studies highlight the importance of multimodal approaches to
guide electrocatalyst design and motivate further study of nanoscale and
chemical effects that can be harnessed to design efficient\, earth-abund
ant\, and stable electrocatalysts for electrochemical transformations.

DESCRIPTION:All Duke students are invited to attend an information session
about a unique Duke practicum course that examines the negotiation of in
ternational climate change agreements under the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).\n\nFeatured speakers will include
Jackson Ewing (Nicholas Institute expert and practicum faculty sponsor) a
nd Gabriela Nagle Alverio (Duke J.D. - Ph.D. and former practicum teachin
g assistant).\n\nIn the past\, practicum students have had the opportunit
y to attend the annual international negotiations. Participants in the fa
ll 2026 course may be able to travel to the 31st Conference of the Partie
s (COP 31) in in Antalya\, Türkiye\; the opportunity for course travel is
subject to change based on Duke's international travel policies and indi
vidual visa restrictions.\n\nDuke students from all fields\, departments\
, and programs (including upper-level undergraduate students and those in
masters\, professional\, and doctoral degree programs) are encouraged to
apply to take part in the practicum\; the only prerequisite is a passion
for climate change policy.\n\nInterested students should join the Nichol
as Institute email list for updates on the process and register for the Z
oom info session on April 23 at 12 - 1 p.m. ET. Applications will be rele
ased later this summer and more information on the application process wi
ll be discussed in the info session.\n\nQuestions? Reach out to Colleen N

DESCRIPTION:Quantum computing stands at the forefront of scientific innova
tion\, captivating broad interest as a dynamically evolving field. Recent
years have witnessed remarkable progress in developing and analyzing qua
ntum algorithms for a wide range of scientific computing challenges. Thes
e applications include various numerical linear algebra tasks\, solving h
 igh-dimensional differential equations\, learning from quantum systems\,
and more. \nIn this summer school\, we will introduce quantum algorithms
and quantum computing from a numerical analysis and applied mathematics p
erspective. We will first go over fundamental principles and basics of qu
antum mechanics and quantum computing\, introduce contemporary and essent
ial techniques for constructing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms\, and t
hen delve into quantum algorithms of various tasks for scientific computi
ng purposes\, including quantum dynamics simulation\, numerical linear al
gebra tasks\, numerical differential equation\, and quantum learning task
 s. No prior background in quantum physics or quantum computing is assumed
. \nThe summer school will be held in person at Duke University\, Durham\
, North Carolina\, from July 27 to August 7\, 2026. Graduate and advanced
undergraduate students with strong interests in applied mathematics\, sc
ientific computing\, or quantum information are especially encouraged to
apply. The summer school plans to provide travel and local expense suppor
 t for all attendees. \nWebpage: https://sites.duke.edu/siamss2026/\nAppli
 cation Deadline: March 1st 2026.
