DESCRIPTION:Following the ecological and infrastructural turn in media stu
dies\, this dissertation project investigates cultural responses to and r
epresentations of planetary ecological issues. By bringing together 'medi
a events\,' eco-art and media activism in or about the Amazon Forest\, it
embraces a cross-media approach to examine the ecological footprint of m
edia linked to the Amazon within the contemporary context marked by commu
nications revolution\, climate change activism and impending ecological c
atastrophe.\n\nThe project also shows the important place Amazonian ecome
dia has in affecting dominant techniques of environmental communication -
namely framing\, flows and mediation - even as media's material producti
on and processes might remain complicit to extractivism and environmental
degradation.\n\nIn foregrounding emerging media and communicative practi
ces mainly by Amazonian indigenous actors and organizations that at once
promote a transformative engagement with tropical geographic spaces as we
ll as with media's extractivist effects\, the project ultimately helps to
broaden understanding of what role the Amazon is currently playing in bo
th ecological geopolitics as well as mainstream media and visual culture.

DESCRIPTION:It is estimated that worldwide\, there are 100\,000 people wit
h cystic fibrosis (pwCF)\, a genetic-disease which reduces lung function
and has historically led to significantly decreased healthspans. Chronic
lung infections of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pwCF are tied with worse hea
lth outcomes\, and often present as biofilms\, a mode of bacterial life w
hich can confer antibiotic recalcitrance. One hypothesized mechanism for
this recalcitrance is diffusion-limitations\, which theorizes physical in
teractions between antibiotics and the biofilm extra-cellular matrix caus
e reduced antibiotic efficacy. Our research aims to investigate this mech
anism by proposing new physical models which replicate existing experimen
tal evidence for this hypothesis\, performing our own experimental invest
igations in synthetic biofilm analogues\, and running physical simulation
s to test model predictions in these experimental systems.\n\nAbout the s
peaker: Josh is a 5th-yr PhD student in the Civil and Environmental Engin
eering Department at Duke University. His research interests include a b
road range of mathematical modelling subjects and approaches\, ranging fr
om finite-element simulations of microscale transport of nanoparticles in
bacterial biofilms to mechanistic modelling of macroscale transport of n
utrients in surface waters. He combines this physics-based modelling appr
oach with confocal microscopy expertise to bridge the experimental and th
eoretical divide in bacterial transport modelling. He is pursuing a caree
r as a public servant\, having been selected as a 2024 Presidential Manag
ement Fellows Program Finalist.\n\nTHIS IS A HYBRID SEMINAR WITH IN-PERSO
N & REMOTE ATTENDANCE OPTIONS.\nThis seminar will be held in Field Audito
rium (room 1112)\, Grainger Hall.\nVisit the seminar website for a livest
ream link to tune in virtually.\nBoth attendance options (in person and v
irtual) are free and open to all.
