\n\nAbout the Book: When musician and Ne w Yorker contributor Howard Fishman first heard Connie Converse's voi ce on a recording\, he was convinced she could not be real. Her recording s were too good not to know\, and too out of place for the 1950s to make sense-a singer who seemed to bridge the gap between traditional Americana (country\, blues\, folk\, jazz\, and gospel)\, the Great American Songbo ok\, and the singer-songwriter movement that exploded a decade later with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.
\n\nSupported by a dozen years of res earch\, travel to everywhere she lived\, and hundreds of extensive interv iews\, Fishman approaches Converse's story as both a fan and a journalist \, and expertly weaves a narrative of her life and music\, and of how it has come to speak to him as both an artist and a person. Ultimately\, he places her in the canon as a significant outsider artist\, a missing link between a now old-fashioned kind of American music and the reflective\, complex\, arresting music that transformed the 1960s and music forever.\n\n
Howard Fishman is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker\, where he has published e ssays on music\, film\, theater\, literature\, travel\, and culture. His bylines have also appeared in the New York Times\, Rolling Stone\, The Telegraph\, Vanity Fair\, The Washington Post\, Artforum\, San Francisco Chronicle\, Mojo\, The Village Voice\, and The Boston Globe. His play\, A Star Has Burnt My Eye\, was a New York Times "Critics Pick." As a performing songwriter and bandleader\, Fishman has toured in ternationally for over two decades. He has released eleven albums to date \, and is the producer of the album Connie's Piano Songs: The Art Song s of Elizabeth "Connie" Converse. He is based in Brooklyn\, NY.

The Black Archival Imagination seminar series brings the film 's director\, Ramadan Suleman\, to Duke University for a screening and di scussion of the movie on its twentieth anniversary.\n\nZulu Love Letter t ells the tale of two mothers looking for their daughters against the back drop of South Africa's first successful democratic elections and the esta blishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. \n \nRamadan Sulema n Bio: Ramadan Suleman\, director\, writer\, and producer\, born in 1955 in Kings Rest Bluff\, near Durban\, South Africa\, studied at the School for Research in African Theatre and was one of the founding members of th e Dhlomo Theatre\, a first black theatre in Johannesburg\, South Africa. Zulu Love Letter was his second feature film and has won several awards i nternationally. In 2009\, Suleman launched - Zulu Love Letter - the Scree nplay\, published by Wits Press\, which he co-authored.\n \nDr. Josslyn L uckett Bio: Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies\; she is also affiliated faculty of NYU's Asian Film and Media Initiative. This event will feature poet Lillian-Yvonne Bertram and Duke Computer Science Professor Cynthia Rudin as the two discuss poetry and creativity.\n\nLillian-Yvonne Bertram is an African American writer\, poet\, artist\, and educator who works a t the intersection of computation\, AI\, race\, and gender. They are the author of Travesty Generator (Noemi Press)\, a book of computational poet ry that received the Poetry Society of America's 2020 Anna Rabinowitz pri ze for interdisciplinary work and was longlisted for the 2020 National Bo ok Award for Poetry. They are the recipient of a National Endowment for t he Arts Poetry Fellowship. She focuses on machine learning tools that help humans make be tter decisions\, mainly interpretable machine learning and its applicatio ns. She has also received a Guggenheim Award to support her work in transparent and socially responsible AI. He spec ializes in Afro-diasporic literature and cultures and has interests in pe rformance studies\, black political culture\, diaspora\, and colonialism\ , especially where they intersect with race\, gender\, and sexuality. Fle ming is the author of Black Patience: Performance\, Civil Rights\, and th e Unfinished Project of Emancipation\, which received the 2024 College La nguage Association Book Prize and the 2022 Hooks National Book Award.\n\n "Empire After Civil Rights: Race\, Outer Space\, and the New Geographies of Colonialism"\n\nThis talk explores how the Civil Rights and decoloniza tion movements helped to instigate a new era of empire and colonialism. I t examines how\, at the same time that formerly colonized nations were ga ining independence\, and black people across the globe were beginning to secure social and political freedoms\, outer space became a new frontier of global empire building and colonial exploration. It argues that\, in t he face of this watershed transformation of modernity's racial geographie s\, imperial powers like the United States and France worked to convert o uter space into the provenance of a distinct post-war site of imperial an d colonial expansion. Further\, it considers how this quest to colonize o uter space entailed a strategic reanimation of prior colonial geographies and networks of colonial relation. His work focuses on nineteenth-century B ritish literature\, environmental humanities\, critical theory\, and the novel\, as well as research in Anglophone modernism and the cultures of c ontemporary globalization.\n\nAbstract:\n"What does it feel like to live helplessly in a world that is coming undone? In this lecture\, Nathan K. Hensley draws on his new book\, Action without Hope: Victorian Literature after Climate Collapse (Chicago\, 2025)\, to propose three categories fo r making change when altering the course of events feels impossible. Focu sing on paintings of an extraction-scarred Jamaica by iterant watercolori st William Berryman and tiny verse fragments by Emily Brontë\, Hensley sh ows how these and other nineteenth-century thinkers construed revolution in a minor key: they rescaled action away from the grandly heroic and tow ard minor adjustments and collaborative interventions. Turning away from logical proofs and direct argumentation\, they instead called on aestheti c technologies and figural strategies\, finding scope for change not at t he level of the theme or thesis but in small movements of hand and mind. This one-day conference is a space for undergraduates attendi ng Duke University\, UNC-Chapel Hill\, North Carolina State University (N C State)\, and North Carolina Central University (NCCU) to share their li terature-related research. The event will be held on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 at Duke University. \n\nThe conference will open with a keynote speech by Dr. Jason Miller (Distinguished Professor of English\, NC Stat e University). Two sessions of student presentations will occur in Rubens tein 153 (Holsti-Family Assembly Room) before lunch\; after lunch\, stude nts and attendees will return to Holsti-Anderson and participate in a wri ting workshop led by Mesha Maren (Associate Professor of the Practice of English\, Duke University)\, followed by one more session of student pres entations.
