 oved with feelings of sadness / not against it / not trying to transform 
 it? Melancholy Pilates is a series of horizontal moves\, performed on a y
 oga mat\, to sad songs. We'll begin and end with guided visualizations an
 d breathing exercises. The bulk of class will be strengthening and length
 ening exercises-that's right! pilates!-while we focus on staying with our
  body and with sensation while in motion.\n\nWear clothes you feel comfor

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a work-in-progress showing of the new work 
 that Eiko Otake and Wen Hui will create during the residency. A Q&A discu
 ssion will follow the showing\, moderated by the Director of the American
  Dance Festival\, Jodee Nimerichter. A reception will take place right af
 ter the Q&A during which you could meet and converse with the artists.  \
 n \nAbout Eiko Otake: Born and raised in Japan and a resident of New York
  since 1976\, Eiko Otake is a movement-based\, interdisciplinary artist\,
  whose collaborative and solo projects have been commissioned by American
  Dance Festival\, BAM Next Wave Festival\, the Whitney Museum\, the Walke
 r Art Center\, and the Museum of Modern Art\, among others. Eiko has been
  the recipient of many awards including the MacArthur Fellowship\, Doris 
 Duke Award\, Scripps American Dance Festival Award\, and a Bessie's Speci
 al Citation. She teaches at Wesleyan University\, New York University\, a
 nd Colorado College.\n \nAbout Wen Hui: Wen Hui is one of the pioneers of
  Chinese contemporary dance theater. She is a choreographer\, dancer\, an
 d she also makes documentary films and installations. She graduated with 
 a degree in choreography from Beijing Dance Academy in 1989\, and in 1994
 \, she studied modern dance in New York. In 1994\, she founded China's fi
 rst independent dance theater company\, "Living Dance Studio." In 2005\, 
 Wen Hui and Wu Wenguang established Caochangdi Workstation and co-curated
  the "Crossing" International Dance Festival in Beijing. Wen Hui's works 
 research how the body holds an archive of personal social documentation\,
  and experiment with how bodily memory catalyzes collision between histor
 y and reality.

 dio\, cafeteria\, site for social dance and relaxation\, and now the Duke
  Dance Program dance studio and site for creative collaborations and embo

 ance and community ritual featuring an intergenerational ensemble working
  with movement and song\, influenced by Threshold Singing\, a practice of
  singing to those on the threshold of life and death. Please join to be a
