Wonderful piece\, opus 1 #3.\n\nSchuber t's Trio in B-flat\, a large\, lively\, and lyrical work\, was written du ring his final illness - simultaneously with his dark and brooding final work\, the song cycle\, Winterreise. Robert Schumann said of the Trio\, " One glance at Schubert's Opus 99 and the troubles of our human existence disappear - and all the world is fresh and bright again."\n\n###\n\nTetzl aff-Tetzlaff-Doerken was originally billed as Tetzlaff-Tetzlaff-Vogt and was comprised of the Tetzlaff siblings and pianist Lars Vogt. In Septembe r 2022\, Vogt tragically passed away from cancer at age 51. Environmentalists Bill McK ibben and Joan Maloof joined forces with novelists Joan Maloof and Richar d Powers (Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Overstory) to select a ran ge of prose and poetry on the relationship between people and trees. Thes e words were set to music by composers Eric Moe\, Melinda Wagner\, Stephe n Jaffe and David Kirkland Garner in a linked cycle of recitatives and ar ias\, narrated by Nnenna Freelon.\n\nOur resident ensemble\, Ciompi Quart et\, brings this unique project to Duke Performances\, alongside a work b y John Luther Adams\, another composer preoccupied with the natural world . His program brings us three major works - including t he familiar\, the familiar but strange\, and the strange but familiar.\n\ nThe Brahms sonata is a staple of the cello chamber music repertoire\, 15 minutes of Brahmsian searching\, brooding\, and contemplating.\n\nIf you know Brahms's Four Serious Songs\, you have probably heard them performe d by a dark\, usually male\, voice and piano. Elschenbroich makes his cel lo that dark voice\, allowing us to hear the "songs" in a wholly new cont ext and light.\n\nThe Franck sonata\, originally written for violin and p iano\, is beloved by so many performers that it been transcribed not only for cello\, but also for viola\, double bass\, flute\, oboe\, clarinet\, alto saxophone\, tuba\, and organ with choir. Expect to be humming the t heme of the last movement as you leave the concert hall. The music snarls\, though on o ccasion with mock-cheer.\n\nShostakovich was forced by Joseph Stalin to w rite symphonic music that glorified the Soviet State\; but Stalin cared n ot for chamber music. That left Shostakovich free to do his most intense exploration and imaginative creative work in the string quartet genre. Hi s 10th quartet (1962) is characterized by a puritanical-like fury.\n\nBar tok's sixth quartet was written during a period of great personal stress: The War limited publication possibilities\; his mother died\; his own he alth began to fail\; and he decided to uproot his family and the move to the United States. Tardy is one of the most ve rsatile jazz musicians of his generation\, equally comfortable in a varie ty of musical and improvisational situations. In 1992\, he started playin g with legendary drummer Elvin Jones\, and he recorded his first CD\, "Cr azy Love." Tardy has played with many prominent jazz artists including Wy nton Marsalis\, Jay McShann\, Nicholas Payton\, Roy Hargrove\, Steve Cole man\, Betty Carter\, Don Byron\, Bill Frisell\, Rashied Ali\, Ellis Marsa lis\, Brian Lynch and John Patitucci\, among others. His performances hav e taken him around the world\, playing at all of the major jazz festivals and on some of the biggest stages in jazz. As a sideman\, he has been fe atured on several Downbeat Albums of the Year and also several Grammy nom inated recordings\; including a Grammy winning CD with Brian Lynch in 200 6. He also has recorded fourteen CDs under his own name featuring his uni que compositions\, blending his love of traditional jazz with a more mode rn seeking style. His latest project\, "If Time Could Stand Still\," was released in the fall of 2020 on WJ3 Records. \n\nJazz trumpeter Derrick G ardner is inspired by the finest hard-blowing funky bop bands of the 1960 's. Gardner quickly made his mark when he arrived on the New York jazz sc ene in 1991. There he began an illustrious career that has taken him arou nd the world performing internationally with the Count Basie Orchestra\, (1991-present)\, Frank Foster's Loud Minority Band\, Harry Connick Jr.'s Big Band\, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Swiss tenor pla yer Roman Schwaller's European Sextet. Over the last 29 years\, he has wo rked with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie\, George Benson\, Frank Foster\ , Jon Faddis\, Nancy Wilson and Tony Bennett. In 2010\ , he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 'Film Pr actices' from Arizona State University. While Markowski never studied mus ic in college\, his primary music teachers have included Gary Larkins\, D awn Parker\, Jon Gomez\, Dr. Karl Schindler\, and Michael Shapiro. The piano creates a soundscape of industrial noises to reflect the repetitive looms of the co tton mills\, which is punctured by bluesy sounds of the workers singing t o overcome the monotony and hardship of such work.
