 m the Emerson String Quartet\, a group that has been at the forefront of 
 chamber music-making across the globe for the best part of a half century
 . With more than 30 acclaimed recordings\, nine GRAMMY Awards\, three Gra
 mophone Awards and an Avery Fisher Prize to their name\, this year the Am
 erican quartet bids adieu to the concert stage.\n\nOn their farewell tour
 \, the Emersons will bring a range of classic quartets\, opening with Men
 delssohn's passionate String Quartet No. 2\, a work significantly influen
 ced by the late string quartets of another featured composer on the progr
 am: Beethoven. The final of Beethoven's trio of late string quartets - an
 d the composer's personal favorite - is thought to be one of his most ori
 ginal and ambitious\, with shifting chromaticism and contrapuntal movemen
 t. Sandwiched in between these two works is Debussy's only string quartet
 \, the only piece to which he ever attributed an opus number and designat
 ed a key. Despite its conventional form\, however\, the work is full of D
 ebussy's trademark impressionistic tonal shifts.

 re loving maverick\," (San Diego Union Tribune) Curtis' second solo recit
 al in Carnegie's Weil Recital Hall was described by the NY Times as "the 
 gutsiest" and Pitchfork magazine wrote that "Curtis's range as a soloist 
 is a revelation." She has appeared as a soloist at the Kimmel Center in P
 hiladelphia\, at the Lincoln Center\, with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in
  Venezuela\, with the Knights Chamber Orchestra\; given world premieres a
 t the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York\; collaborated with composer Joh
 n Adams at the Library of Congress\; appeared at El Festival de las Artes
  Eseìnias in Peru and many other festivals worldwide. After completing he
 r Masters' at Juilliard\, Curtis joined the International Contemporary En
 semble\, touring worldwide for 14 years. She continues her involvement th

 e and artistic directors of the Garth Newel Music Center. Fang has been f
 eatured at such prestigious venues as Alice Tully Hall\, John F. Kennedy

  a soloist and chamber musician\, she has performed as Principal Flutist

  Charlotte New Music Festival\, The Current\, Providence Chamber Music Se

DESCRIPTION:Outstanding solo musicians\, the Merz Trio has grabbed headlin
 es across the globe for their 'entrancing\, dynamic performances' (BBC Mu
 sic Magazine) and 'stunning virtuosity' (Reading Eagle). Juxtaposing dyna
 mic new music with forgotten and familiar works\, they are an ensemble to
  watch.    \n\nThe trio brings a typically dynamic program to the Chamber
  Arts Series\, with works spanning over 300 years. This program explores 
 a central element in the music of Latvian composer\, Pēteris Vasks: the s
 truggle between the forces of darkness and light. Movements from Vasks' E
 pisodi e canto perpetuo find musical foils in episodes along the way: Wei
 nberg's Op. 24 Piano Trio\, a work written in 1945\, a product of war and
  refuge\, the sense of mirroring and reflection in Schumann's canon for p
 edal piano\, our arrangement of Landi's Augellin which takes ideas from M
 essiaen's Quatour\, conceived as a pairing for Vasks' work that itself pa
 ys homage to Messiaen. Midway\, you'll find a moment of reprieve in Purce
 ll's lullaby before the disintegration and sense of refraction that ensue
 s in Sokolovic's Portrait Parle. Schumann\, as a composer who embodies th
 is struggle vividly in both his music and his life\, finishes the program
  with his glorious F major trio\, at times a sublime bath of light though
  not without its moments of shadowy uncertainty and inner search.

 cal interpretations. She has inspired and premiered over 100 new composit
 ions and continues to collaborate with composers both young and more esta

 rded the Médaille d'Or from the conservatory in Bordeaux\, France\, where

 med with such artists as Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Augustin Hadelich\, Ray Che
 n\, Sergei Antonov\, Yura Lee\, Martin Storey\, Paul Coletti\, Ian Clarke
 \, and Branford Marsalis\, in addition to regularly performing with Blue 
 Mountain Ensemble and in duos with saxophonist Susan Fancher and violinis
 t Fabián López. Ināra Zandmane is the staff accompanist at the University
  of North Carolina at Greensboro. \n\nBranford Marsalis was drawn to musi
 c along with siblings Wynton\, Delfeayo and Jason. His first major jobs w
 ere with trumpet legend Clark Terry and alongside Wynton in Art Blakey's 
 legendary Jazz Messengers. When the brothers left to form the Wynton Mars
 alis Quintet\, the world of uncompromising acoustic jazz was invigorated.
  Branford Marsalis has received numerous awards\, including three Grammys
  and a citation as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. 
 He has become increasingly sought after as a featured classical soloist w
 ith such acclaimed orchestras as the Chicago\, Detroit\, Düsseldorf\, and

DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko captured the attention of t
 he global music press a decade ago when he took home the Gold Medal in th
 e prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has appeare
 d on the world's leading stages with top orchestras and conductors\, but 
 he brings his trademark breadth of repertoire to Duke Arts with a solo re
 cital.   \n\nWith a program spanning over 250 years\, Kholodenko opens wi
 th a suite by Handel which is perceived to be one of the main pillars of 
 the Baroque composer's keyboard music. Audiences will also be treated to 
 sonatas by Haydn and Beethoven\, both a slight break from the composers' 
 usual compositional approaches. Kholodenko shows his technical prowess an
 d bold programming with Thomas Adès's Traced Overhead\, the longest of th
 e British composer's solo piano works - all profoundly expressive and imm

  The Ciompi Quartet\, begins their season this evening with a quartet by 
 Haydn\, reviving a Ciompi tradition. They follow with a dynamic set of co
 mparatively contemporary works by three female composers. Sofia Gubaiduli
 na and Shelley Washington both organized their works around Sol (the pitc
 h G)\, but they go in remarkably different directions. Gubaidulina probes
  the question "existence vs. essence" whereas Washington explores a place
  she calls "Home of the Heart\, Heart of the Home." Revered Polish compos
 er Graźyna Bacewicz gave us one of the best piano quintets of the era: r
 omantic\, dramatic\, forward-looking.

 ral avante-garde chops\," is how New York Magazine describes saxophonist\
 , multi-reedist\, and composer Gregory Tardy. Tardy is one of the most ve
 rsatile jazz musicians of his generation\, equally comfortable in a varie
 ty of musical and improvisational situations. In 1992\, he started playin
 g with legendary drummer Elvin Jones\, and he recorded his first CD\, "Cr
 azy Love." Tardy has played with many prominent jazz artists including Wy
 nton Marsalis\, Jay McShann\, Nicholas Payton\, Roy Hargrove\, Steve Cole
 man\, Betty Carter\, Don Byron\, Bill Frisell\, Rashied Ali\, Ellis Marsa
 lis\, Brian Lynch and John Patitucci\, among others. His performances hav
 e taken him around the world\, playing at all of the major jazz festivals
  and on some of the biggest stages in jazz. As a sideman\, he has been fe
 atured on several Downbeat Albums of the Year and also several Grammy nom
 inated recordings\; including a Grammy winning CD with Brian Lynch in 200
 6. He also has recorded fourteen CDs under his own name featuring his uni
 que compositions\, blending his love of traditional jazz with a more mode
 rn seeking style. His latest project\, "If Time Could Stand Still\," was 
 released in the fall of 2020 on WJ3 Records. \n\nJazz trumpeter Derrick G
 ardner is inspired by the finest hard-blowing funky bop bands of the 1960
 's. Gardner quickly made his mark when he arrived on the New York jazz sc
 ene in 1991. There he began an illustrious career that has taken him arou
 nd the world performing internationally with the Count Basie Orchestra\, 
 (1991-present)\, Frank Foster's Loud Minority Band\, Harry Connick Jr.'s 
 Big Band\, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Swiss tenor pla
 yer Roman Schwaller's European Sextet. Over the last 29 years\, he has wo
 rked with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie\, George Benson\, Frank Foster\
 , Jon Faddis\, Nancy Wilson and Tony Bennett. He formed his own sextet\, 
 The Jazz Prophets\, in 1991.

 the Salisbury Symphony of NC as well as concertos with the Greensboro Phi

 s release. \n\nAlways striving to keep the broadest possible perspective 
 on style and repertoire\, Shteinberg is equally involved in solo and cham
 ber music\, and has worked with a number of important musicians\, includi
 ng a three-year collaboration with the cellist Natalia Gutman\, which too
 k him to some of America's most important concert halls\, including the K
 ennedy Center in Washington and the Alice Tully Hall in New York. He play
 ed with the cellist Han-na Chang on "Good Morning America\," and was priv
 ileged to share the stage with the clarinetists Edward Brunner and Stanle
 y Drucker. Other chamber venues have included the Mostly Mozart Festival\
 , Summit Music Festival\, Music Festival of the Hamptons\, the ''Oleg Kag
 an'' and Sulzbach-Rosenberg Festivals in Germany\, Festival Aix-en-Proven

 rship Project (2008)\, and the NYU/ASCAP Foundation's Film Scoring Worksh
 op (2014) where he was named one of ASCAP's Film & TV "Composers to Watch
 ." Mark Snow\, composer of The X-Files and one of the workshop's guest me
 ntors\, says Michael's music was "extremely sophisticated" and "complimen
 ted the mood and emotion of the scene with unusual maturity and sensitivi
 ty." Most recently\, Markowski was invited to join the BMI Lehman Engel M
 usical Theatre Workshop (2015) as a composer and lyricist.

 donesian pianist Janice Carissa has gone on to study at Curtis Institute 
 of Music with a full scholarship. She's now undertaking her master's degr
 ee at The Juilliard School\, while playing at the world's top concert hal
 ls with "the multicolored highlights of a mature pianist." (Philadelphia 
 Inquirer)  \n\nOpening with Busoni's transcription of Bach's iconic Tocca
 ta and Fugue in D minor\, packed full of relentless rhythm and drive\, Ca
 rissa then brings a rarer beauty: Rzewski's depiction of workers at a 193
 0s textile mill plant in Winnsboro\, South Carolina. The piano creates a 
 soundscape of industrial noises to reflect the repetitive looms of the co
 tton mills\, which is punctured by bluesy sounds of the workers singing t
 o overcome the monotony and hardship of such work. Character pieces by Br
 ahms\, a technically demanding but enchanting showpiece by Granados and a
 n almost symphonic sonata by Scriabin complete the program.

DESCRIPTION:The Viano Quartet is a chamber ensemble that commands attentio
 n. Since winning the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Compe
 tition in 2019\, the quartet has established a reputation as one of the m
 ost exciting and dynamic young groups on the classical music scene today.
  The Viano Quartet makes their Duke Arts debut this season\, bringing tog
 ether a vibrant range of works for chamber quartet\, both established and
  new additions to the repertoire.  \n\nThe first piece in Piazzolla's Sui
 te del Ángel opens the program: an elegant tango\, packed full of unusual
  jazz-infused harmonies. Just as Piazzolla was renowned for pushing the e
 nvelope stylistically\, Bartók's String Quartet No. 3 incorporates an arr
 ay of colorful effects and pioneering extended instrumental techniques\, 
 such as strumming\, pizzicato and playing with the bow close to the bridg
 e or with the wood rather than the hair of the bow. A new quartet by the 
 versatile young Canadian composer Kevin Lau is at the center of this prog
 ram\, before the Viano Quartet finishes with Beethoven's String Quartet N
 o. 13 and its dramatic original final movement\, the Große Fuge.

  to its perpetually lively tempo and soaring main theme. They then cycle 
 forward to an early 20th-century masterpiece by Bartók\, richly imbued wi
 th elements of Hungarian\, Romanian and Bulgarian music\, utilizing a wid
 e range of extended instrumental techniques and folk harmonies. Bringing 
 us back to an elegiac mood is Schubert's 'Death and the Maiden' quartet\,
  the last major work the composer completed before his death in 1847 - wh
 ile he was mourning the unexpected death of his sister Fanny.

DESCRIPTION:Duke viola professor Jonathan Bagg and pianist Emely Phelps pe
 rform a concert of shorter contrasting works that range from the 1930s up
  to the present moment. Andrew Norman's glorious "Sabina" evokes a breath
 taking moment: dawn breaking in one of Rome's oldest churches and filling
  it with light. A world premiere by David Kirkland Garner evokes Philip G
 lass with pulsing rhythms and gorgeous harmonies. An early sonata by Afri
 can American composer Ulysses Kay\, a mature work by TJ Anderson\, a long
 -time resident of Chapel Hill\, and American Marion Bauer's Viola Sonata 
 fill out the program with their distinguished\, freshly awakened voices. 
 \n\nFree admission: no tickets or registration needed. \n\nJonathan Bagg 
 is violist of the Ciompi String Quartet and Professor of the Practice at 
 Duke University\, where he teaches viola and chamber music and is former 
 Chair of the Department of Music. His career with the Ciompi includes hun
 dreds of concerts at chamber music venues across the U.S. and around the 
 world\, as well as many recordings. Currently co-Artistic Director of Ele
 ctric Earth Concerts in New Hampshire\, he also serves as principal violi
 st of CityMusic chamber orchestra in Cleveland. \n\nPrior to founding Ele
 ctric Earth Concerts in 2013\, Bagg directed the Monadnock Music festival
  for six years. Bagg's work as an Artistic Director has been supported by
  many different granting organizations\, such as the NEA\, the Goelet\, A
 rgosy\, Copland foundations. As an Artistic Director\, he has initiated c
 reative collaborations between authors\, poets\, and choreographers\, res
 ulting in dozens of newly commissioned works. \n\nRecitals have brought B
 agg to venues such as the Phillips Collection in Washington\, Boston's Jo
 rdan Hall\, New Hampshire's Currier Gallery\, and many other locations. F
 estival appearances include the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival\, the 
 Eastern Music Festival\, the Portland Chamber Music Festival\, the Sebago
 -Long Lake festival\, and the Highlands\, Mohawk Trail\, and Castle Hill 
 festivals. \n\nPraised by the Boston Globe for her "fleet\, energetic\, a
 nd bright-toned" playing\, pianist Emely Phelps enjoys a versatile career
  as a chamber musician\, soloist\, and teacher. A finalist for the 2019 P
 ro Musicis International Award and the 2022-2023 Ernst Bacon Prize for Am
 erican Music\, Emely has given more than 40 performances over the past tw

DESCRIPTION:Having performed in the top concert halls around the globe fro
 m a very young age\, pianist Zlata Chochieva has a distinctive voice and 
 a tranche of international competition prizes to her name. She makes her 
 Duke Arts debut with a program of works built around the beauty - and dar
 kness - of the natural world.   \n\nSchumann's Waldszenen explores the bu
 colic nature of the forest\, but doesn't flee from its dark underbelly. H
 e paints musical portraits of a crackling hearth\, hunting calls and the 
 vivid colors of flowers. Scriabin evokes a more peaceful\, impressionisti
 c scene in his Second Piano Sonata\, representing the calm of the night b
 y the seashore and the tender moonlight\, while also showing the stormy a
 gitation of the ocean. The first movement of Draeseke's Dämmerungsträume 
 ("Twilight Dreams") depicts the falling of red leaves in autumn\, while s
 elected Transcendental Studies by Liszt portray ghostly lights and snow-w
 hirls\, and the hazy dreamscapes in Ravel's Miroirs bring to life nocturn
 al moths\, a lone bird whistling a sad tune and the gentle peal of bells.

 ommanding\ntechnique\, refined temperament and persuasive insight" (New Y
 ork Times). A\nprofessor at Duke University\, Jokubaviciute is a Naumburg
  Chamber Music\nlaureate and recipient of the prestigious Borletti-Buiton
 i Fellowship. \n\nViolinist Hye-Jin Kim is on the faculty at the East Car
 olina University School of Music. She has performed with the Philadelphia
  Orchestra with Christoph Eschenbach\, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra\
 , BBC Concert Orchestra\, Seoul Philharmonic\, Pan Asia Symphony\, Minnes
 ota Sinfonia\, and Hannover Chamber Orchestra. As a chamber musician\, sh
 e has collaborated with renowned musicians Mitsuko Uchida\, Jaime Laredo\
 , Ida Kavafian\, Miriam Fried\, Gilbert Kalish as well as Paul Biss and m
 embers of the Guarneri\, Juilliard\, Miami and Orion String Quartets at M
 arlboro\, Ravinia\, Music@Menlo\, Music from Angel Fire and Prussia Cove.
  \n\nCellist Min-Ji Kim Kim won 2nd place at the Premio Arturo Bonucci In
 ternational Cello Competition in Italy\, 3rd place at the Adam Internatio
 nal Cello Competition\, grand prix awards at the Hudson Valley String Com
 petition\, New England Conservatory String Competition and HAMS Internati
 onal Cello Competition. She has performed with many orchestras around the

  She is the Music Director of Deoksugung Palace Seokjojeon Classical Conc

  of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world's finest chamber orchestr

 st orchestral music. Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group 
 of leading London musicians\, the ASMF gave its first performance in its 
 namesake church in November 1959.  Through unrivalled live performances a

 ler Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film A
 madeus - the orchestra gained an enviable international reputation for it

DESCRIPTION:Wind players from one of the world's finest chamber orchestras
 \, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields\, return to the Chamber Arts Se
 ries with a vibrant program of small-scale chamber works.\n\nThere are tw
 o milestone quintets featured in this program by Mozart and Beethoven res
 pectively\, referencing one another both in their scoring and key signatu
 res. After the premiere of his Quintet\, Mozart wrote to his father sayin
 g 'I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.' 
 With extensive sketches in existence for this piece\, it was clearly a pr
 oject Mozart had laboured over - surprising for a composer not usually kn
 own for rewriting material. Beethoven takes his lead from Mozart in his y
 outhful Quintet\, written in his twenties when he was exploring the sonic
  possibilities of instruments in a chamber setting. We're also presented 
 with two trios in this concert\, one by the French neoclassical composer 
 Jean Françaix and another lively offering by the German Romantic composer
  Reinecke.

 uré's setting of Paul Verlaine's love poetry\, which floods the stage wit
 h glorious daylight. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano\, call
 ed a "matchless interpreter of contemporary opera" in Opera News\, brings
  virtuoso musicianship to a collaboration with the Ciompi and Duke collea
 gue\, pianist Ieva Jokūbavičiūtė.
