It was there they s tudied with the Ysaÿe Quartet and attended classes with Walter Levin and György Kurtág. Modigliani has gone on to perform on the world's most pres tigious stages and returns to Duke Arts with a typically wide-ranging pro gram. The program begins with the most 'unconventional:' Webern's Five Pi eces\, a fascinating web of interconnected motifs and melodies punctuated with unexpected instrument and bowing techniques. Two much-loved string quartets follow: the second of Beethoven's three 'Razumovsky' Quartets an d Ravel's first and only string quartet: a bold masterpiece\, which often sounds fuller than just its four instruments because of the depth of col or explored throughout. She quickly took to the instrument\, which she received as a birthday present. Over the next few years won several national piano competitions in her native country. By the age of ten\, she had entered the School of Music at the Korea Nati onal University of Arts\, and went on to make a number of concerto and re cital appearances in Seoul and Daejeon. In 1997\, Yang moved to the Unite d States to begin studies at the pre-college division of the Juilliard Sc hool with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky. During her first year at Juilliard\, Yan g won the pre-college division Concerto Competition\, resulting in a perf ormance of Haydn's Keyboard Concerto in D with the Juilliard Pre-College Chamber Orchestra. After winning the Philadelphia Orchestra's Greenfield Student Competition\, she performed Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with that orchestra at just twelve years old. She graduated from Juilliard wi th special honor as the recipient of the school's 2010 Arthur Rubinstein Prize\, and in 2011 she won its 30th Annual William A. Petschek Piano Rec ital Award. After graduation\, she wa s admitted to the Suzhou Pingtan Troupe\, performed all over the country\ , and participated in large-scale CCTV festival performances many times.\ n\nPingtan is a unique performing tradition that originated over 400 year s ago in Southeastern China and involves stringed instruments\, singing\, and humorous storytelling as a duet.\n\nYuan Ni\, an accomplished Erhu s oloist\, has been dedicated to her musician's life since birth. She earne d a BA in Erhu Performance from Wuhan Conservatory of Music. After gradua ting\, Yuan continued to pursue an advanced musical education in the Unit ed States. In 2021\, she received her MA in Ethnomusicology from Kent Sta te University. They begin with the great composer's pioneering first two cello sonatas\, both of which prese nt an elegantly expressive partnership between cello and piano. This is o ne of the first examples of the two instruments being placed on equal foo ting in chamber music\, rather than the cello being limited to a continuo part. A few years after the success of these sonatas\, Beethoven then wr ote three sets of variations\, all based on operatic tunes. We are treate d to the first of those here in this recital: 12 Variations on 'See\, the conqu'ring hero comes\,' probably the best-known chorus from Handel's Ju das Maccabeus. Beethoven's Op. 69 Sonata is considered by many to be the greatest cello sonata ever written\, composed at the height of his 'heroi c period' about a decade later in 1807. The program the ensemble is bringing to Duke Arts spans more th an 160 years\, beginning with the most recent: Shostakovich's Quartet No. 7. He composed the piece in 1960\, dedicated to the memory of his first wife in the year that would have been her 50th birthday. Haydn's Quartet No. 2 in F-Major\, meanwhile\, was written right at the end of the 18th c entury. It was his final quartet and is the pinnacle of his writing for t he medium\, showing his quartet writing at its very best. While Haydn wro te nearly 70 string quartets in his career\, our next composer wrote just three\, one of which has been lost\, while another was never completed. The Goldmund Quartet will perform Grieg's remaining quartet\, a work prai sed by Franz Liszt for its 'soaring flight and resonance for the instrume nts for which it is written.' They return to Duke Arts with a recital pairing w rought\, emotional string quartets by the composing siblings\, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. Fanny's is her only mature string quartet\, and one of the earliest surviving quartets written by a woman that we have on recor d. It celebrates German Romanticism\, with dazzling flourishes of virtuos ity and harmonic innovation. Her brother's String Quartet No. 6 was writt en a decade later in tribute to her. Known as 'Requiem for Fanny\,' the q uartet was Felix's final musical offering before his death\, complete wit h unrelenting rhythms\, syncopations and chromaticism. Following his sist er's death in May 1847\, Felix was distraught\, pouring his grief into th is piece before he died several months later. Famed for their winning combination of 20th-cen tury classics and trailblazing new works\, the Zodiac Trio brings a simil arly exciting program to Duke Arts that includes the group's trademark in terpretation of Bartók's Contrasts. This piece shares an unexpected tie-i n with another work in this program. The Zodiac Trio presents a tribute t o the legendary tunes of the King of Swing\, Benny Goodman\, who was one of the musicians responsible for the creation of Bartók's revered work. G oodman commissioned Contrasts with violinist Joseph Szigeti\, and the pai r performed its premiere with Bartók himself at the Carnegie Hall piano i n 1940. Alongside these works are chamber arrangements of a jazz-inspired symphonic poem by Gershwin and a rhythmic orchestral reimagining of a Me xican dance by Marquez. The program is completed with the Serenade for Th ree by the comedy genius Peter Schickele.
