Since winning the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Compe tition in 2019\, the quartet has established a reputation as one of the m ost exciting and dynamic young groups on the classical music scene today. The Viano Quartet makes their Duke Arts debut this season\, bringing tog ether a vibrant range of works for chamber quartet\, both established and new additions to the repertoire. \n\nThe first piece in Piazzolla's Sui te del Ángel opens the program: an elegant tango\, packed full of unusual jazz-infused harmonies. Just as Piazzolla was renowned for pushing the e nvelope stylistically\, Bartók's String Quartet No. 3 incorporates an arr ay of colorful effects and pioneering extended instrumental techniques\, such as strumming\, pizzicato and playing with the bow close to the bridg e or with the wood rather than the hair of the bow. A new quartet by the versatile young Canadian composer Kevin Lau is at the center of this prog ram\, before the Viano Quartet finishes with Beethoven's String Quartet N o. 13 and its dramatic original final movement\, the Große Fuge. She makes her Duke Arts debut with a program of works built around the beauty - and dar kness - of the natural world.   \n\nSchumann's Waldszenen explores the bu colic nature of the forest\, but doesn't flee from its dark underbelly. H e paints musical portraits of a crackling hearth\, hunting calls and the vivid colors of flowers. Scriabin evokes a more peaceful\, impressionisti c scene in his Second Piano Sonata\, representing the calm of the night b y the seashore and the tender moonlight\, while also showing the stormy a gitation of the ocean. The first movement of Draeseke's Dämmerungsträume ("Twilight Dreams") depicts the falling of red leaves in autumn\, while s elected Transcendental Studies by Liszt portray ghostly lights and snow-w hirls\, and the hazy dreamscapes in Ravel's Miroirs bring to life nocturn al moths\, a lone bird whistling a sad tune and the gentle peal of bells. CREATED:20230831T202420Z DESCRIPTION:Wind players from one of the world's finest chamber orchestras \, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields\, return to the Chamber Arts Se ries with a vibrant program of small-scale chamber works.\n\nThere are tw o milestone quintets featured in this program by Mozart and Beethoven res pectively\, referencing one another both in their scoring and key signatu res. After the premiere of his Quintet\, Mozart wrote to his father sayin g 'I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.' With extensive sketches in existence for this piece\, it was clearly a pr oject Mozart had laboured over - surprising for a composer not usually kn own for rewriting material. Beethoven takes his lead from Mozart in his y outhful Quintet\, written in his twenties when he was exploring the sonic possibilities of instruments in a chamber setting. His virtuosic perf ormances have made him one of the most important pianists working today\, both in recital and concert halls and in the studio.   \n\nGrosvenor is a renowned interpreter of Chopin\, bringing two of the composer's most po pular works to the Baldwin Auditorium. To Schumann\, Chopin's Ballade No. 1 "seemed to be the work closest to his genius\," and to Chopin himself\ , it was his "dearest work." Chopin's Sonata No. 2 is best known for its third movement\, the "Funeral March\," written first and believed to be t he motivating force for the other three movements. In the second half of the concert\, Grosvenor showcases another composer with whom he is closel y associated: Liszt\, whose Berceuse borrows many characteristics of Chop in's writing. Liszt's Sonata in B minor completes the recital\, a work pr aised by Wagner as being "beautiful beyond compare." Having met during their studies in 1995 for the 150th anniversary of their names ake Gabriel Fauré\, the Fauré Quartett have established a reputation as l eading interpreters of not only the French composer but also of works out side the mainstream repertoire. \n\nTheir selected program opens with Ma hler's Klavierquartettsatz\, a hauntingly beautiful single movement piece and the composer's only known piece of instrumental chamber music. Next up is a work by the group's namesake\, Fauré's Piano Quartet in c-minor\, a work of stunning lyricism and emotional depth that perfectly captures the composer's romantic sensibilities. Together\, French classical violinist Gabriel Richard and Senegales e songwriter Felwine Sarr juxtapose the sung repertoire of West African c lassical music\, Afrobeat and Baroque European music with electrifying re sults. Richard and Sarr are both Duke professors: Richard in the Departme nt of Romance Studies and Sarr in French and Francophone Studies. Richard and Sarr will be accompanied by pianist Alejandro Santoyo and kora playe r Yacouba Diabate.\n\nWith an inspiringly multidisciplinary career\, Sarr is an intellectual\, humanist\, academic\, philosopher\, economist\, pla ywright and poet - as well as a musician. In 2021\, he was named among Ti me Magazine's 100 most influential people for his work restituting Africa n and Asian artworks to their countries of origin. His intimate songwriti ng could be described as Afro-folk\, with reggae accents and evocative me lodic sensibilities. Resonance will be a multilingual poetic experience\, with texts and poetry punctuating the duo's scintillating music-making. CREATED:20230608T173710Z DESCRIPTION:The Doric String Quartet is one of the leading quartets of its generation\, widely celebrated for its approaches to a wide range of rep ertoire and\, as "The Observer" has noted\, its 'warmth\, finesse and exc iting attack.'\n\nThe ensemble begins with Schumann's jovial String Quart et No. 3. which was penned in 1842 - a year in which the composer was pre occupied with 'constant quartet thoughts\,' as he noted in his diary. Thi s gives way to an exuberant early quartet by Beethoven\, whose agile writ ing and deft handling of counterpoint make for an engaging listen. The Do rics end with Schubert's final quartet\, written around the same as Beeth oven was completing his own late string quartets. This is a substantial w ork with a wide range of dynamic contrast and texture. Lyrical ideas and structural ambiguity take precedence here over traditional harmony\, with many facets of Schubert's musical personality brought to life in a vibra nt juxtaposition.
