DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Schweig listens to rap songs about hist
orical events in Taiwan as synergetic efforts to imagine new forms of pos
t-authoritarian sociality. She suggests ways of understanding how musical
sound sets rap apart as a medium\, in addition to film and literature\,
for speeding the recovery from multigenerational legacies of trauma.\n\nM
eredith Schweig completed her MA (2009) and PhD (2013) in ethnomusicology
at Harvard University\, where she also received her BA (2003) in Music a
nd East Asian Studies. Her research explores twentieth- and twenty-first-
century musics of East Asia\, with a particular emphasis on popular song\
, narrativity\, and cultural politics in Taiwan and China. An assistant p
rofessor of ethnomusicology at Emory\, she is currently working on a book
about Taiwan's hip-hop scene. A second project in development refracts q
uestions about music\, memory\, and transmedia storytelling through a stu
dy of global pop icon Teresa Teng. She maintains additional research inte
rests in sound studies\, sensory studies\, translation studies\, kinetic
sound sculpture\, and the museology/musicology nexus.

DESCRIPTION:"AI and the Ethnography of Musical Futures: Prototype\, Update
\, Real-Time\, and DeepDream." Lauren Flood is a postdoctoral fellow at
the Wolf Humanities Center\, University of Pennsylvania. In this talk\, s
he considers the intersections between the Maker Movement (the practice o
f building do-it-yourself (DIY) projects) and growing trends in artificia
l intelligence (AI)\, particularly machine learning. Drawing on fieldwork
in Berlin\, she shows how Makers working with machine learning are const
antly engaged in a tug-of-war between past\, present\, and future. Words
that capture this struggle-prototype\, update\, real-time\, and DeepDream
(the latter of which describes hallucinatory computer-manipulated art)-p
articularly dominate how Makers build musical machines and instruments.

DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, ethnomusicologist Ryan Skinner (Associate Pr
ofessor\, Ohio State University) presents a set of provisional answers fr
om his experiences as an observer of Mali and student of its music over t
he past two decades. These answers are neither exhaustive nor mutually ex
clusive\, but they do give a sense of the crucial complexity that Malian
artists playfully\, critically\, and artfully negotiate when they make (a
nd we hear) their music-what Skinner calls in his book\, "Bamako Sounds"
(Minnesota\, 2015)\, "the Afropolitan ethics of Malian music." The talk w
ill also explore the way these case studies inform methodological approac
hes to and theoretical concerns for a more musical anthropology\, and con
nect this disciplinary perspective to Skinner's current research on an em
ergent\, and currently effervescent Afro-Swedish public culture. Ryan Ski
nner is a musical anthropologist who studies the expressive cultures and
social worlds of contemporary Africa and its European diaspora\, with ext
ensive fieldwork conducted in Mali and Sweden. Specializing in the analyt
ic methods of cultural anthropology and ethnomusicology\, Skinner's resea
rch focuses on issues of popular culture\, ethics and aesthetics\, public
piety\, cultural policy\, intellectual property\, racial identity and po
litics\, and new social movements in the African world.

DESCRIPTION:The twentieth century was witness to an ethical discourse abou
t the scope of the human that took its cues from a discussion of how peop
le should sound. The tones and timbres of vocal and instrumental music be
came key reference points in a dialogue about how to maintain a human exi
stence under the conditions of modern urban industrial capital. Three int
erlocked musical movements-historical performance\, folk revivalism and w
orld music-represent overlapping attempts to retrieve an ethical humanity
within the contexts of the perceived dehumanizing processes of industria
l modernity. The three share common arguments about the human body and th
e value of social participation as important locations in which to find c
ontinued expressions of humanity in the contemporary world. David Samuels
is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at New York
 University. A linguistic anthropologist\, folklorist\, and ethnomusicolog
ist\, he has published extensively on the confluence of affective symbols
in the context of vernacular modernities. His articles have been publish
ed in The Annual Review of Anthropology\, Semiotica\, The Journal of Ling
uistic Anthropology\, Language and Communication\, and American Ethnologi
 st.

DESCRIPTION:Berlioz's essay "Le chef d'orchestre\, théorie de son art" (18
 55) was among the first and most widely disseminated attempts to describe
the art of modern conducting. Drawing together technical with literary a
nd scientific language\, it aimed to capture the relationship between lea
ders and players and\, more broadly\, the modes of discipline\, persuasio
n\, and animation that underpinned romantic orchestral performance. Centr
al to the essay are notions of electricity-artificial\, animal\, and 'inv
isible.' Orchestral leaders were at once electricians\, mesmerists\, comm
anders\, and magicians\, figures whose power relied in large part on the
perceived mystery of electrical transmission. Here\, I tease out that ide
